Hurricane Gil forms in eastern Pacific but not forecast to threaten land
Mexico City, Aug 2 (AP) Tropical Storm Gil strengthened into a hurricane in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Friday but was not expected to threaten land, forecasters said.
The Miami-based US National Hurricane Center said the storm was about 1,080 miles (1,740 kilometers) west-southwest of the Baja California peninsula of Mexico.
Gil had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph) and was moving west-northwest at 20 mph (31 kph).
No coastal watches or warnings were in effect. The storm was expected to keep traveling to the west-northwest in the coming days.
Gil was strengthening during a busy period for storms in the eastern Pacific.
Another named storm, Iona, which also was once a hurricane, was downgraded from a tropical storm to a tropical depression as it moved far to the west of Hawaii. It, too, was not threatening land.
Other storms could develop in the coming days in the eastern Pacific, forecasters said. (AP) NSA NSA

Krishna basin river mapping starts to study causes of floods
Kolhapur: The cross-sectional mapping of the rivers in the Krishna basin has started to understand the reasons for the flooding of these rivers. Irrigation officials said a Pune-based technical expert firm has been engaged for the survey. They said the depth and width of the river streams are being measured. An arithmetic model is being prepared to study the causes of the floods. The survey is scheduled to end in Sept. Based on the findings, a draft report to take measures to prevent the rivers from flooding would be prepared and submitted to state govt and then to the World Bank to secure funds. The model will be prepared, which will tell us why floods occur, the frequency of the occurrence, and ultimately the measures to stop the floods. The mapping will be completed by the end of Sept, and we have to submit the detailed project report for the works to be carried out and to get the funds by the end of Feb. Information about the flow rate, depth, and width is being gathered mainly from the locations of bridges along the rivers. State govt's Maharashtra Institute for Transformation and the World Bank have entered into an agreement. The WB would fund Rs 2,300 crore, and state govt would allocate nearly Rs 8,000 crore for various components of the project. The first component is to get stormwater drainage properly built in Kolhapur, Sangli, and Ichalkaranji cities to avoid urban flooding, with funds of Rs 900 crore allocated for that. Another component of the project is to divert floodwaters to the water-scarce regions of Maharashtra, mainly Marathwada. The mapping of the rivers and finding the exact causes of the floods is a step towards achieving the goal. A rollover incident involving a UTV vehicle injured two contractors. While one with minor injuries was transferred by ambulance, the other suffered moderate injuries and was rescued by helicopter. All three were admitted to Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria for treatment.

Himachal: 2 NH among 297 roads closed, orange alert for very heavy rains
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Shimla, Aug 3 (PTI) Moderate to heavy rains continued to lash parts of Himachal Pradesh, resulting in the closure of 297 roads, including one national highway on Sunday, officials said. The local meteorological office has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rains in isolated areas of Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur on Monday and Una, Bilaspur, Kangra and Sirmaur on Tuesday. A person died and two others sustained injuries when their vehicle fell into a gorge following a landslide near Dargi on Sunni area of Shimla district on Sunday. The ill-fated vehicle with three people on board was on its way to to Chanog. The deceased was identified as Lekhraj (37). Vikas and Nitish are under treatment at Indira Gandhi Medical College Hospital, Shimla, officials said. On Saturday evening, Dinesh Kumar (54) was killed when a bulldozer he was operating plunged into a deep gorge in Kumarsain, around 77 kilometres away from Shimla. So far, there have been 103 reported deaths due to rain-related incidents, with 36 people still missing. The fatalities include 20 drownings, 19 deaths from falls, 17 deaths from cloudbursts, eight from flash floods, and six from landslides, officials said. Since Saturday evening, several regions have experienced moderate to heavy rainfall, with Bharari recording 108.2 mm, follow ed by Murari Devi with 82 mm, Naina Devi at 74.4 mm, Malraon at 56.2 mm, Brahmani at 45.4 mm, Una at 38 mm, and Jot at 36.2 mm. A total of 297 roads, including NH-505 (Khab to Gramphoo) have been closed for vehicular traffic as of Sunday evening. The majority of these, 164 roads, are in the heavily affected Mandi district, while 67 are in Kullu district, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC). Additionally, 134 power distribution transformers and 266 water supply schemes have been affected across the state, the SEOC said. Since the onset of the monsoon on June 20 until August 3, the state has incurred losses totalling Rs 1,714 crore. As many as 1,649 houses have been fully or partially damaged in the state, with 53 flash floods, 28 cloudbursts and 47 major landslides recorded this season, officials said.
