Taillon and Tucker help surging Cubs beat Rockies
Jameson Taillon pitched four-hit ball into the seventh inning, Kyle Tucker drove in two runs and the Chicago Cubs beat the Colorado Rockies 3-1 on Monday.
NL Central-leading Chicago improved to 8-2 in its last 10 games. Colorado lost for the eighth time in nine games, dropping to a major league-worst 9-45.
Taillon (4-3) retired his first 14 batters before Mickey Moniak connected in the fifth, driving a changeup deep to right-center for his fifth homer. Moniak also hit a solo drive during Sunday's 5-4 loss to the New York Yankees.
Taillon departed after he struck out Brenton Doyle looking for the first out of the seventh. The big right-hander struck out seven and walked none.
Daniel Palencia, the fourth Cubs reliever, pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.
Colorado's Carson Palmquist (0-3) permitted two runs and three hits in five innings in his third major league start.
The Cubs jumped ahead when Ian Happ scored on Dansby Swanson's groundout in the first inning.
After Moniak's homer tied it in the fifth, Tucker singled in Matt Shaw in the bottom half of the inning. Tucker added a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

The Rockies threatened in the sixth, putting runners on second and third with one out. But Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner threw out Jacob Stallings when he tried to score on Ryan McMahon's grounder. Michael Toglia then struck out looking.

But like any good leader, Hayes understands balance. This year she's giving key players a 'much-needed break.' Advertisement Roughly 10 days out from the next USWNT camp, we are still waiting for the roster. But Hayes revealed in an interview with ESPN that she plans to give the Europe-based players the next summer window off. This includes two games against Ireland in Denver and Cincinnati next week and one versus Canada in Washington, D.C., on July 2. With the 2027 World Cup in Brazil two years away and her core group starting to take shape, Hayes said that 'player welfare' and 'rest and recovery' are important, especially considering number of games played, the length of seasons and the frequency of games since the 2023 World Cup. The camp will help key players returning from injury, too. Vice-captain and defender Naomi Girma, who spent her first months with Chelsea injured, will return to the team as she continues to build fitness. Hayes also hopes Rose Lavelle will join. The Gotham midfielder had ankle surgery in the offseason and made her first start earlier this month. Roman Anthony hit his first career home run for Red Sox
Roman Anthony left the yard for the first time of his Major League career Monday night. The Red Sox prospect hit his first career home run as Boston kicked off a three-game series against the Mariners in Seattle. Anthony went deep in the top of the first inning off Mariners starter Logan Gilbert. With two outs and the bases empty, Anthony took a 2-2 sinker from the Seattle righty and deposited it 391-feet over the fence at T-Mobile Park to put Boston on top, 1-0. Someone go get that ball! Late Sunday night, after the team had completed a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees for its fifth straight win, Boston traded designated hitter Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in a blockbuster move. The shocking trade took one of the best bats in baseball out of the Boston lineup, which looked a lot different Monday night. Abraham Toro hit second in Devers' old spot in the lineup, while rookie Kristian Campbell was Boston's DH. Anthony hit third in the order while playing right field in Seattle. He had been hitting out of the leadoff spot or No. 5 spot over his first six games in the Majors. With Devers no longer in the mix, even more pressure will be on Anthony to perform at the plate. The rookie entered Monday's game just 1-for-17 at the plate, with his lone hit a two-run double in a 3-1 Red Sox win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park.

Goodman and Moniak homer in the 9th to give the Rockies a 6-4 victory over the Nationals
WASHINGTON (AP) — Hunter Goodman homered twice, including a tying shot in the ninth inning, and then Mickey Moniak connected for a two-run drive that gave the Colorado Rockies a 6-4 victory over the skidding Washington Nationals on Monday night. Colorado entered with 57 losses this season, tied with the 1932 Boston Red Sox for the most in the modern era (since 1901) through 71 games. Both the Rockies and Red Sox won their 72nd game. Washington has lost nine straight overall. Goodman tied it 4-all with a solo shot to left-center — his 13th homer of the season to lead National League catchers. Moniak, who tripled in the fifth and scored on Michael Toglia's single for a 3-1 lead, sent a two-run homer into the bullpen in right field to put Colorado ahead with his eighth home run this season. Seth Halvorsen walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the ninth before getting a double play and a groundout to earn his fourth save. Victor Vodnik (2-2) pitched a scoreless eighth. Kyle Finnegan (0-2) was handed his fifth blown save of the season. Thirteen of Colorado's last 20 games have been decided by two or fewer runs, with the Rockies going 6-14 during that span.
