Schools Shut, Deserted Roads In Kerala As Trade Unions Strike Over Anti-Labour Policies

NDTV09-07-2025
Thiruvananthapuram:
Shops, offices and schools remained closed, public vehicles kept off streets and roads wore a deserted look in Kerala with the 24-hour nationwide general strike called by trade unions to protest against the central government's alleged anti-labour policies.
Cutting across cities, towns and villages, the CPI(M)-ruled southern state is witnessing a complete shutdown after the strike began Tuesday midnight.
Only private vehicles could be seen running along the state roads, and several people got stranded in bus stands and railway stations in many places.
Police personnel came to their support in several such areas and ferried them in official vehicles to their respective destinations, including hospitals.
Protesters, belonging to various trade unions, took out marches raising slogans against the union government across the state and stopped buses and autos which tried to operate.
Agitators blocked the service of Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses in Kochi and Kollam in the morning and engaged in arguments with its staff.
In Kochi, the bus employees said they belonged to the BJP's trade union BMS and they decided not to cooperate with the agitation. However, the police didn't ensure them adequate support to complete the trip, they alleged.
A photo of a KSRTC driver driving the bus wearing a helmet, became viral on social media platforms.
The driver, Shibu, later said he was not taking part in the protest and he used the helmet out of fear of attack from protesters.
The Kollam-bound bus from Pathanamthitta driven by him, was also blocked by the protesters later.
Though some auto rickshaws could be seen running along the roads in Thiruvananthapuram in the morning hours, they were also blocked by protesters.
Roads wore a deserted look as public vehicles stayed off the streets, and workers across various sectors stayed away from their duties in solidarity.
However, essential services like healthcare, emergency services, and milk supply have been exempted from the strike to avoid public hardship.
The trade sector also came to a complete standstill as all shops, ranging from tiny wayside ones to supermarkets and shopping malls, downed their shutters.
The authorities have already invoked a dies-non for government employees to prevent them from taking leave on the agitation day. But the attendance in state-run offices and institutions was remarkably low, as the nationwide strike received strong support from trade unions and Left-leaning organisations in the CPI(M)-ruled state.
The nationwide general strike has been called by the Joint Platform of Trade Unions, which comprises 10 central trade unions (CTUs) along with independent all-India sectoral federations and associations.

Opposition up in arms over alleged discrepancies in draft electoral rolls

The Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are up in arms over the alleged discrepancies in the draft electoral rolls for the Kochi Corporation and the larger Ernakulam district published by the State Election Commission. This, they alleged, was a concerted effort in connivance with officials to set the ground in favour of the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]. The UDF's Ernakulam MLA T.J. Vinod has petitioned the Chief Election Commissioner with copies to the District Collector and the Kochi Corporation secretary. He pointed out that hundreds of voters in many delimited wards had been erroneously included in the neighbouring wards and even in entirely different Assembly constituencies. In one such instance, 600-odd voters from 200-odd households in the Perumanoor division in the Ernakulam Assembly constituency were found included in the Panampilly Nagar division in the Thrikkakara Assembly constituency, Mr. Vinod said. 'The voters concerned are required to submit applications in Form 7 to resolve this mistake. It was practically difficult for 10,000-odd voters in the Ernakulam constituency alone to submit applications and then turn up for hearing in the short period allowed for the purpose. This amounted to violation of a citizen's right to cast vote,' he said. Voters have been given time till August 7 to apply to correct mistakes in the draft electoral rolls. This will be followed by hearings of petitioners, and the final list will be published by August 31. M.G. Aristotle, UDF parliamentary party leader in the Corporation, alleged that in the voter's list for the civic body, prepared based on building numbers, over 500 voters were listed under buildings numbered '0'. He said this undermined the very sanctity of the list and questioned how a building could be assigned the number '0' and how such buildings could be identified. 'There have also been instances where persons who were not members of the households in the relevant building numbers were shown as voters of those buildings. For instance, in my building number where only my mother and I reside, a stranger has been shown as a voter,' he said. P.S. Shaiju, chairperson of the BJP city district committee, alleged that in divisions and wards where the BJP had a good chance of victory, the party's voters had been handpicked and deliberately shifted to the list of other wards and divisions to sabotage the party's prospects. 'This has been done deliberately with the connivance of the officers. We have petitioned the Collector, who is also the District Election Officer, and unless a favourable decision is forthcoming by Monday (July 28, 2025), we will move the court,' he said.

Ajit Pawar visit to Pune reignites Opposition charge of ‘flight' of industries

The spectre of industries, jobs and economic opportunities moving out or away from Maharashtra to other States reared its ahead again on Saturday (July 26, 2025) as a video of Deputy Chief Minister in conversation with a sarpanch from a Pune suburb referenced the issue. Conducting a 6 a.m. surprise visit the Hinjewadi area of the city to review ongoing efforts to tackle civic infrastructure issues that have worsened during the monsoon, Mr. Pawar was heard confronting Hinjewadi sarpanch Ganesh Jambhulkar, 'We are ruined. The entire Hinjewadi IT Park is moving out. It's going out of my Pune, out of Maharashtra, to Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Don't you care at all?' The Deputy CM and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader was referring to the condition of the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjewadi, spread over 2,800 acres and developed by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation in the mid-1990s, which houses over 800 IT and business entities including majors such as Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, and Tech Mahindra. The visit came in response to severe waterlogging and traffic chaos during the first spell of monsoon, which had triggered public complaints. Sapkal criticism Following the video going viral, the Congress accused the Mahayuti government of failing to maintain Maharashtra's industrial dominance, citing crumbling infrastructure, corruption and lawlessness. 'The IT industry that once flourished in Hinjewadi during Congress rule is now migrating to Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar himself has admitted this,' said Harshvardhan Sapkal, president of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee. Mr. Sapkal questioned Mr. Pawar's dual role as Pune's Guardian Minister and Deputy Chief Minister. 'Was Ajit Pawar asleep while Pune declined? He must take responsibility and resign,' he demanded. Launching a sharp critique of the BJP-led alliance government, he said, 'Basic infrastructure is collapsing, and entrepreneurs are losing faith. As a result, not just existing businesses but even future investments are moving away – largely to Gujarat.' The Maharashtra Congress chief cited the ₹1.6-lakh-crore Vedanta-Foxconn project, which was lost to Gujarat, as an example of 'BJP's administrative failure'. 'If even the Deputy CM acknowledges the flight of industries, the government owes the public a clear explanation,' he said. Hinjewadi's decline In May 2024, the Hinjewadi Industries Association (HIA) had claimed that 37 IT companies moved out from the infotech park over the previous 10 years due to the deteriorating infrastructure and traffic congestion in the locality. A month later, NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule said she would hold meetings with the infotech park companies and convince them to stay back. 'The kind of IT park expansion we see elsewhere, like Bengaluru, has not happened here. We are potentially losing business – companies are reluctant to send their employees to Hinjewadi despite the government's efforts. It will take time to regain their confidence,' said Pawanjit Mane, Maharashtra State president of the Forum for IT Employees (FITE).
