
Kolkata police forms 5-member SIT team to investigate Kolkata gangrape case
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 28 (ANI): Kolkata police has formed a five-member Special team to investigate the alleged gangrape of a law student in Kolkata.
The latest development came as the opposition parties mounted pressure on the ruling Trinamool Congress-led West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and demanded her resignation and security for women at educational institutions.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Pradip Kumar Ghosal of South Suburban Division (SSD) will lead the special team.
Meanwhile, the three accused, Manojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, whom the police have named, have been remanded to police custody till July 1.

A female student was allegedly gang-raped inside the South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata's Kasba on Wednesday, June 25.
The West Bengal unit of the Congress party staged a protest in Durgapur on Saturday over the alleged gangrape of a law student in Kolkata. Carrying party flags, protesters also held a sit-in demonstration. Police intervened to disperse the crowd in order to ease traffic congestion.
A protester told ANI, 'Mamata Banerjee is the first lady Chief Minister of West Bengal. A common citizen of Bengal had trusted her with the responsibility of safeguarding the women.'
Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar was detained on Saturday while protesting against the incident.
The protest was organised by the party at Gariahat Crossing in Kolkata. Waiving the BJP flags, they attempted to climb over the barricades guarded by police personnel.
'This is the face of democracy in West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee has ruined democracy in the state...The police have arrested me and other workers (of the BJP)...,' he told reporters while being escorted by police to a van.
Earlier in the day, BJP MP Sambit Patra told reporters while addressing a press conference, 'We are not asking for clarification from Mamata Banerjee. We are asking her to apologise and resign,' Patra said. (ANI)

Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel visits Khavda Renewable Energy Park, reviews ongoing work
Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], June 28 (ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Saturday visited the site of the world's largest upcoming Hybrid Renewable Energy (RE) Park near Khavda and held a review meeting with representatives from various companies. On this occasion, he inspected the progress of solar and wind energy generation from the Central Control Room, reviewed the ongoing work with officials, and offered guidance to further advance the vision of green energy, said release. To pave the way for a Viksit Gujarat through green growth, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Renewable Energy (RE) Park near Khavda in December 2020. Spread across approximately 800 square kilometres of area, this under-construction park aims to generate 37 gigawatts of 100 per cent eco-friendly electricity by the year 2028. By 2028, the Khavda Renewable Energy Park is expected to supply electricity to approximately 1.85 crore households across the country. On this occasion, Rajendra Mistry, Chief Project Officer of Gujarat Power Corporation Limited, presented an overview of the work completed so far and the ongoing progress at the park. Notably, the Renewable Energy (RE) Park hosts power generation projects from both public and private sector companies, including National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC REL), Gujarat Industries Power Company Limited (GIPCL), Gujarat Power Corporation Limited (GPCL), Adani Green Energy Limited, and Sarjan Realities Private Limited. During the visit, several dignitaries and officials were present, including Kutch Collector Anand Patel, Devjibhai Varchand, Ajay Sehgal from National Thermal Power Corporation Limited, Tirth Nath Singh, Project Head of the Adani Group, and Anil Musar, representative of Sarjan Realities Private Limited. ED attaches assets worth Rs 557 crore of Mahira Group in money laundering case
New Delhi [India], June 28 (ANI): The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has provisionally attached assets worth approximately Rs 557.43 crore in connection with a money laundering case against the Mahira Infratech Pvt Ltd (formerly M/s Sai Aina Farms Pvt Ltd) M/s Mahira Buildtech Pvt Ltd, and M/s Czar Buildwell Pvt Ltd. According to an official release, the ED under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) of 2002 attached assets, including seven immovable properties, comprising around 35 acres of residential and commercial land, located in Gurugram's Sector 68, 63A, 103, 104, 92, 88B, and 95. Additionally, Fixed Deposit Receipts (FDRs) amounting to around Rs 97 lakh, belonging to various companies, have also been attached. The ED initiated the probe based on FIRs filed by Gurugram Police against M/s Sai Aaina Farms Pvt. Ltd. and others under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) related to cheating and forgery . As per the release, the companies allegedly submitted forged documents, including fake bank guarantees, to obtain licenses for internal and external development works connected to affordable housing projects in Sectors 68, 103, and 104 of Gurugram. Over Rs 616 crore was collected from nearly 3,700 homebuyers, but the promised homes were not delivered, and the funds were allegedly misappropriated. The ED investigation revealed that the company siphoned off funds by inflating construction costs through fake invoices issued by associated entities. The money was diverted for personal gains by the company's directors and promoters, and sums from home buyers were transferred as loans to other group entities, which remain unpaid for years. On February 15, 2024, and March 26, 2025, the ED had attached properties worth Rs 81.07 crore linked to M/s Sai Aaina Farms Pvt. Ltd., M/s Mahira Buildtech Pvt. Ltd., M/s D S Home Construction Pvt. Ltd., Sikandar Singh, Dharam Singh Chhoker (ex-MLA), Vikas Chhoker, and related companies involved in the case. Sikandar Singh, a promoter of the Mahira Group, was arrested on April 30, 2024. A prosecution complaint has been filed, and the Special Court in Gurugram has taken cognisance of the same. Another key accused, Dharam Singh Chhoker, who had evaded arrest for over a year despite six non-bailable warrants, was arrested on May 5. Vikas Chhoker remains absconding, and a proclamation has been issued against him by the Special Court in Gurugram. Further investigation is underway. (ANI)

Indian Army, Russian Land Forces bolster defence ties at IRIGC meet in St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg [Russia], June 28 (ANI): Indian Army strengthens ties with Russian Land Forces at the 4th Indo-Russian Inter-Governmental Commission (IRIGC) Sub Working Group (Land) meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia from June 25 to 27. The interaction between the Two Armies focused on enhancing bilateral Defence Cooperation, including exchanges in niche technologies such as Drones, C-UAS, Electronic Warfare, and operational logistics equipment. The event also included a visit to Mikhailovskaya Artillery Academy and the 56th Guards District Training Centre, Leningradsky Military District, the Indian Army said. Strengthening the bilateral defence engagement further, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met Russian Defence Minister Andrey Belousov on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers' meeting in Qingdao, China. The meeting came shortly after Singh arrived at the venue on Thursday, where he was received by Chinese Defence Minister Admiral Dong Jun. Upon his arrival, Singh joined Admiral Dong and other participating leaders for a group photograph ahead of the official proceedings. Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif arrived at the venue after Singh. The SCO Defence Ministers' meeting, being held from June 25 to 26, brings together member states to discuss key regional and global security issues. The discussions are expected to focus on international and regional peace and security, counter-terrorism cooperation, and enhanced collaboration among the defence ministries of SCO member states. In a press release, the Ministry of Defence stated, 'Defence Ministry is expected to highlight India's continued commitment to the principles and mandate of the SCO, outline India's vision towards achieving greater international peace & security, call for joint & consistent efforts to eliminate terrorism & extremism in the region, and stress on the need for greater trade, economic cooperation and connectivity within SCO. He will also hold bilateral meetings with the Defence Ministers of some participating countries, including China and Russia, on the sidelines of the meeting.' India, the Ministry noted, places special importance on the SCO as a platform for promoting multilateralism and cooperation across politics, security, economy, and people-to-people ties in the region. 'SCO pursues its policy based on the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity of nations, non-interference in internal affairs, mutual respect, understanding and equality of all member states,' the Ministry added. The SCO is an intergovernmental organisation established in 2001. India became a full member in 2017 and held the rotating chairmanship in 2023. Member countries include India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Belarus. China has assumed the Chair of the SCO for 2025 under the theme 'Upholding the Shanghai Spirit: SCO on the Move.' (ANI)
