Television star and reality show personality Rashami Desai, known for her roles in shows like Uttaran and Bigg Boss, has never shied away from discussing her relationship with her body. Over the years, she's been candid about her fluctuating weight and the effort it takes to manage it, especially with the demanding nature of her profession.
Her Wellness Journey Through the Years
Back during her Uttaran days, Rashami successfully shed nearly 10 kilos, a transformation she attributes to a mindful approach to food and fitness. Her transformation wasn't just cosmetic; it was rooted in self-discipline and a deeper understanding of her body.
A Food-First Philosophy
Rashami has always believed in the power of nutrition. 'For me, staying fit is 80% about what I eat and 20% about how much I work out," she said in a conversation with Outlook. Due to her hectic schedule, finding time for workouts isn't always possible, which makes dietary awareness even more crucial. She believes mental control over food choices leads to physical fitness, while movement and exercise help maintain a positive mindset.
In a chat with Telly Masala, the 39-year-old actress mentioned she's far more conscious of her food now. She's reduced her salt intake and follows a clean, balanced diet. Planning meals in advance has become second nature, allowing her to avoid unnecessary indulgence.
Yoga plays a central role in Rashami's fitness lifestyle. She performs Surya Namaskars daily and combines that with a 30-minute walk to stay active and focused. Whenever she has the time, she includes stretching and strength-building exercises into her routine. Her goal, she says, isn't rapid weight loss but achieving strength, flexibility, and mental peace.
Interestingly, a 2024 study published in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrated Medical Sciences supports Rashami's approach. The research showed that practicing 45 minutes of Surya Namaskars and heating Pranayama for four weeks helped lower Body Mass Index (BMI) and reduce waist circumference in participants, reinforcing the benefits of ancient Indian wellness techniques.
Battling Psoriasis and Its Impact on Her Body
In a heartfelt interview with Hindustan Times, Rashami opened up about her struggles with psoriasis, a chronic skin condition that significantly impacted her weight and confidence.
'I was diagnosed with psoriasis in December last year. It's a condition that can take a long time to manage, and in some cases, it may never fully go away," she shared. For several months, Rashami was on steroid-based medication, which led to noticeable weight gain. 'I wasn't allowed to be in the sun, as it worsens the symptoms. And it flares up with stress—but it's hard not to be stressed when you're in an industry where your appearance is so important."
Despite the emotional and physical challenges, Rashami never allowed her condition to defeat her spirit. She remained committed to living a healthy lifestyle, focusing on nourishment and gentle movement to keep herself balanced and resilient.
Her journey is a powerful reminder that wellness is not just about how you look, it's about understanding your body, honoring its limitations, and showing up with consistency and compassion.

Breastfeeding, I was told, is one of the most intimate and powerful experiences after childbirth. That quiet we-time, skin-to-skin bond was meant to be sacrosanct to not just nurture my baby, but also help me establish connect as a new mother. What nobody prepared me for was the physical and emotional struggle that breastfeeding could be. Gestational diabetes can impact breastfeeding, but it can be managed with the right diet and physical and emotional support.(Adobe Stock) I am Radhika Bhirani, Editor at Health Shots, a women's health and wellness platform by Hindustan Times - and this is my story. My baby refused to latch. He cried - almost howled - the moment I would try to brush his lips against the breast. I cried for hours, helpless that I wasn't being able to do even the most basic thing a mother is expected to do. A lactation expert dismissed me, "He was latching in the hospital". The paediatrician said, "You seem to have given up already... You're not trying hard enough, mommy". The pressure kept building. I tried fenugreek tablets and other galactagogues, but nothing helped. I thought 'Let's use the breast pump, shall we?' But hours of breast pumping could not produce even 5 ml of breast milk a day. It struck me that perhaps gestational diabetes affected my milk production, considering I was on insulin and pills to manage my high blood sugar levels during pregnancy. Sane and supportive voices around me reminded me that 'Breast may be best, but fed is truly best'. And so, we settled for feeding the little one with formula milk instead of keeping him hungry and crying. However, the question about how gestational diabetes impacts breastfeeding, was worth getting an answer for. For World Breastfeeding Week 2025, I took a leaf out of my personal journey, and asked Dr Esha Gupta, Consultant - Paediatrics, Paediatric Intensivist and Lactation expert, Motherhood Hospitals, Bengaluru, about it. "For most first-time mothers, breastfeeding also comes with its own set of expectations and complications. One of the most common things to worry about for a woman who has developed diabetes during pregnancy is, 'Will this affect my ability to make milk?' But the short answer is — it possibly will, but it isn't definitive, and there are a lot of things that can be done to ensure healthy milk output," Dr Gupta tells Health Shots. What is gestational diabetes? Diabetes that typically shows up in the second or third trimester of pregnancy is gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). It alters the method in which your body metabolizes insulin and creates higher blood sugars that will impact both baby's and mom's health, if not managed. It usually goes away after delivery — but its impact can persist, especially while nursing, the expert explains. Can gestational diabetes affect milk supply? Milk production is delayed in some mothers due to high blood sugar levels during pregnancy. "Additional evidence shows that gestational diabetes mellitus retards the onset of milk production (lactogenesis II), which must be established 2–4 days postpartum," says Dr Gupta. This happens because of insulin, which plays an important part in the hormonal ecosystem for milk production. "For insulin-resistant women — the typical gestational diabetes profile — the body is perhaps not picking up so quickly on the lactation signals. Mix in other risk factors like obesity, PCOS, or hard labor, and the milk 'coming in' will be delayed. What is important to note is that delay is not failure. It is seen that breastfeeding is not an issue when it comes to well-supported and well-fed mothers. Mothers, if provided with a good diet along with ample mental support, helps them to continue with breastfeeding," she adds. Breastfeeding can be hard if a baby doesn't latch or enough milk is not produced. (Freepik) For all women, gestational diabetes doesn't mean you'll not be able to breastfeed. But some may take a little longer and a little more help. What to expect? You can anticipate the first 1–2 days of colostrum (thick yellow milk) production to be in small quantities. Your breasts will be fuller once mature milk comes on day 3 or 4. In case your baby is not wetting diapers (key sign of well-fed baby) or your breasts don't feel full, it is worth a visit to a lactation consultant. Tips to stimulate healthy milk production 1. Early and frequent breastfeeding: Try to breastfeed the infant in the first hour. Breastfeed 2–3 times with a 2–3 hour interval even if it feels like nothing is happening. Stimulation is critical as early as possible. 2. Hand expression or pumping: If the baby is sleeping or having trouble latching (more frequent in diabetic mothers' babies), start pumping at 6 hours postpartum. Pump 8–10 times within 24 hours. 3. Skin-to-skin first priority: This activity is not just about snuggling your baby. It is also said to release milk-induction hormones such as oxytocin. 4. Check postpartum blood glucose levels: Spontaneous blood glucose level at and following delivery may influence energy and lactation hormone levels. Have regular meals and keep glucose checked as recommended. 5. Recharge and rehydrate: Don't forget water, protein meals, and nutritious fat. 6. Emotional support: Worry and doubt turn into an anxiety loop that spoils the milk flow. Have a strong support system that doesn't judge you for your breastfeeding struggle. Home remedies to increase milk production Though few studies are available, a majority of mothers find the following old remedies to work, suggests Dr Gupta: Moringa (Drumstick Leaves): Stimulates lactation and controls blood sugar levels. Fenugreek Seeds: Stimulates milk. But use with caution if you are diabetic as it will lower blood sugar levels. Oats, barley water, and garlic are other age-old lactation-stimulating foods. Also read: 6 foods can increase your breast milk production A word of caution: "Always consult your doctor before adding herbs or supplements, especially if you're managing blood sugar levels." The last word Gestational diabetes can have an impact on timing and amount of milk. Most women with GDM (Gestational Diabetes Mellitus) do indeed go on to breastfeed successfully too. Smriti Irani recently revisited one of the most painful and challenging moments of her life: working through a miscarriage while shooting for the hit daily soap Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. She recalled continuing to work on set despite dealing with physical pain and emotional trauma. 'My son was three days old when I came back to the set of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Why? Because everyone wanted to watch a new episode daily at 10:30 pm,' she shared on Raj Shamani's podcast. The actor and politician also revealed the distress of being doubted at such a vulnerable time. 'Somebody in the production went and told Ekta, 'We're ready to shoot. But Smriti Irani isn't available. She is lying. Nothing has actually happened to her.' So I had to go back with my hospital reports to prove it actually happened,' she said. Actor Apara Mehta, who played Smriti's on-screen mother-in-law, corroborated how demanding the work culture was during those years. 'I know Smriti spoke about the miscarriage… I know it for a fact ki use aana bhi pada hoga and karna bhi pada hoga,' she told Hindustan Times, recalling how actors would often be made to shoot from home even while sick, with makeshift backdrops and makeup. Psychologist Anjali Gursahaney tells 'After a miscarriage, a woman's body undergoes several intense physical changes. These can include cramping, heavy bleeding, hormonal fluctuations, fatigue, and in some cases, medical interventions like a dilation and curettage (D&C). The uterus needs time to contract and return to its pre-pregnancy state, while the hormonal system gradually resets, which can also affect mood, appetite, and energy levels.' Rest is critical during this time, not just for physical recovery, she says, but also because pushing through the pain or fatigue can worsen the trauma, delay healing, and lead to long-term complications. Ignoring these needs can be damaging both physically and psychologically. According to Gursahaney, emotional support after a miscarriage should be 'rooted in empathy, validation, and flexibility.' The experience often involves deep grief, shame, or confusion—especially if the loss was not publicly acknowledged. If someone has to return to work soon after, they must be met with understanding rather than expectation. 'Ideally, they should have access to mental health resources like counselling, as well as compassionate communication from colleagues and supervisors. Just being believed, respected, and not asked to justify or 'perform' their pain can go a long way in easing emotional distress during such a vulnerable time,' notes the expert. Workplaces should implement compassionate leave policies specifically for pregnancy loss, separate from generic sick leave. These policies must acknowledge both the physical and emotional toll of miscarriage, without requiring invasive proof. 'Training managers to respond with empathy and confidentiality, and creating space for women to share only what they are comfortable with, can help foster trust. Open conversations about reproductive health and trauma-informed practices can slowly dismantle the silence and stigma that often forces women to either hide their loss or justify it. The goal should be to create a culture where healing is prioritized over productivity,' stresses Gursahaney.

It has been more than two months since the five-member panel formed after the April 14 fire incident at Lok Bandhu Raj Narain Hospital, suggested a series of measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents. The fiber-glass covering at Balrampur Hospital (HT Photo) Hindustan Times visited a few government hospitals to see if these recommendations were being followed, and found shortcomings with respect to fire safety norms being implemented. The panel had made its recommendations on May 22. The HT team visited Balrampur Hospital and Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee Hospital (Civil Hospital) and checked the reality of the recommendations of higher authorities of the health department. The pathology department at Balrampur Hospital has two floors, and on top of it a temporary structure stands with walls made of aluminium and glass but covered with fibre glass sheet. Even the parking area near the emergency block has no roof but only a fibre glass sheet, a highly inflammable material. At Civil Hospital, a portion of the OPD block is covered with the same fibre glass sheet and the ceiling is made of tin, whereas a portion of the emergency building is also covered with the fibre sheet. The wiring beside the OPD building is damaged at places and wires are hanging in the air, dangerous any day. Civil Hospital chief medical superintendent Dr Rajesh Kumar Srivastava stated that the portion which is covered with fibre glass sheet and tin shed on top of the OPD building is a kind of dump yard for waste material. There is no electricity connection in that portion which can be harmful to a patient or staff. In addition, the portion of the emergency block is temporary which is going to be removed and an HDU unit is going to be constructed in its place. Director of Balrampur Hospital, Dr Kavita Arya, stated that the portion over the second floor of the pathology department was temporarily made during the Covid period, which was used for sampling at that time. At present that portion is closed for patients and attendants. A safety audit of the hospital has been completed in which NOC for maximum wards has been received, she said . The five-member panel, formed by the deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak and including director-general, health and family welfare, Ratan Pal Singh Suman, had recommended adequate fire fighting systems, unobstructed ramps and staircases, improved smoke ventilation mechanism, and an avoidance in the use of fibre glass and tin at government hospitals across Uttar Pradesh.
