Supreme Court dismisses IMA plea against Patanjali, upholds abolition of AYUSH Ad rule

Credit: canva In a landmark ruling on 11 August 2025, the Supreme Court of India rejected Indian Medical Association's (IMA) plea against Patanjali Ayurveda and upheld the government's decision rescinding Rule 170 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945. The rule had previously been mandating companies to go to state licensing authorities for advance clearance before advertising AYUSH products—those derived from Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy. (According to a report by TOI Mumbai) The issue began from a 2022 petition by the IMA, which was in firm protest against advertisements released by Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna 's Patanjali group. The advertisements were blamed for disparaging modern medicine while falsely claiming to offer permanent solutions for chronic diseases such as hypertension, asthma, and diabetes. The IMA thought that such claims were not only misleading but also hazardous to public health and thus the Supreme Court issued notices initially to the Union Health Ministry, Ministry of AYUSH, and Patanjali. However, in July 2024, the Ministry of AYUSH officially withdrew Rule 170 through a notification, effectively eliminating legal pre-approval of ads for Ayurvedic medications. Though the regulation had been created with the intention of limiting deceptive marketing, the Ministry argued that the withdrawal was part of sweeping regulatory revamp. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Filipinos don't know about this! Previously, Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah had directed the withdrawal from the market forthwith of the products consisting of unsubstantiated claims. The final hearing witnessed Justice K.V. Viswanathan questioning how the state government would introduce a rule that no longer existed under the law. Justice B.V. Nagarathna also emphasized that the judiciary cannot restore a rule once it is abolished by the central government, thus showing that the matter had reached its legal conclusion. Although the verdict gives temporary relief in the legal sphere to Patanjali, it is also a strong warning for all AYUSH product firms. Any subsequent violation of advertising standards could lead to direct legal actions. For customers, the verdict translates into this: beware and critically evaluate. In a time when traditional medicine is being marketed with minimal regulation, this is what they need to do.

Ayurvedic and Homeopathic Treatment Coverage in Health Insurance

India has a rich culture and history of traditional medicine, with Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Yoga and other alternative therapies playing a significant role in healthcare. These treatments, known for their natural and holistic approach, have gained widespread acceptance due to their ease, effectiveness and minimal side effects. Until recently, getting insurance coverage for these treatments was cumbersome. Today, as more people embrace AYUSH which stands for Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy, health insurers are recognizing its value and offering coverage. This shift is bridging the gap between conventional and traditional medicine, providing policyholders with comprehensive healthcare options. According to a recent survey by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) on AYUSH, nearly 95% of rural and 96% of urban respondents were aware of AYUSH practices. About 46% of rural and 53% of urban individuals have turned to AYUSH for preventative or curing purposes in the past year. According to a special report by Lancet journal in 2007, notably, over 100 million people in India rely solely on homeopathy for their healthcare. Additionally, our country is home to nearly 2,50,000 registered homeopathic doctors—more than anywhere else in the world. This raises an important question: Do insurance companies cover these treatments? The answer is yes. In 2013, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) initiated coverage for AYUSH treatments, making alternative healthcare more accessible. What is covered under AYUSH treatment? AYUSH treatments encompasses a variety of effective therapies from different traditional systems. These therapies can address diseases in their early stages, helping to prevent further deterioration. They also support recovery after hospitalization. One of Ayurveda's notable treatments is 'Panchakarma' which addresses long-term ailments such as paralysis, migraine, and other nerve-related conditions. Additionally, select AYUSH hospitals offer specialized treatments for piles and fistula using 'Ksharasutra', an Ayurvedic procedure. The Unani system effectively treats various ailments, especially joint pain, skin disorders, and gynaecological issues. Therapies such as 'Hijama therapy (cupping)', 'Dalak' are effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Additionally, Yoga and Naturopathy focusses on techniques like yoga, pranayama (breathing exercises), mud therapy, and water therapy to address various health issues like stress and lifestyle disorders. Homoeopathic medicines, on the other hand, are effective for many illnesses, particularly in treating skin conditions, asthma, thyroid issues, and numerous other ailments. Each of these treatments offers unique benefits and can play a significant role in holistic health care. Patients can select the approach that best suits their condition with a range of choices available. AYUSH cover in a health insurance policy Many health insurance companies today provide coverage for AYUSH treatments up to the sum insured opted for by the policyholder. Some insurers may impose an upper limit on the coverage amount, or the limit could be specified as a lump sum or a percentage of the sum insured. In the best-case scenario, the coverage may extend to the entire sum insured. Therefore, if a policyholder files a claim for Ayurvedic or Homeopathic treatments, it will be settled according to the limits specified in their health insurance policy. Hence, policyholders should check their policy details to understand the sum insured and any sub-limits on AYUSH treatments. How to claim for AYUSH treatment? To claim coverage for AYUSH treatments, hospitalisation for at least 24 hours in any government recognised AYUSH hospital or institute is mandatory. If the purpose of hospitalisation is only medical evaluation, then the claim will not be covered by the insurer. Also, treatments that focus on the rejuvenation of the body, which is an integral part of Ayurveda, are generally excluded from the cover, meaning that therapeutic or wellness related treatments must be borne out of pocket. Who is eligible for AYUSH health insurance? Many private health insurance providers offer AYUSH treatment coverage through standard policies, add-on options, or separate plans. The coverage limits and eligibility criteria for these plans are typically outlined in the specific insurance plan's terms and conditions. AYUSH health insurance is available to various groups, including central government employees and pensioners, who are covered under the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) for AYUSH treatments. Additionally, several state government insurance schemes, such as Arogyasri in Andhra Pradesh and Ayushman Bharat in certain states, provide coverage for AYUSH therapies. With origins dating back over 3,000 years, Ayurveda remains one of the world's most structured traditional medical systems. Similarly, Homeopathy, founded in the 18th century, has gained global recognition for its effectiveness in managing chronic diseases. As India continues to adopt integrative healthcare, the inclusion of AYUSH treatments in health insurance reflects a shift in how healthcare is perceived. This shift empowers policyholders to make informed healthcare decisions and also strengthens the foundation of a more inclusive and sustainable healthcare ecosystem.

Yogic Secrets To Help You Tame Anger And Reduce Stress

A Yoga mentor shares wisdom from ancient texts and reveals techniques to help stay calm---or in the 'Samattvam Sthithi'---in any situation You've been losing your temper more than usual lately and you regret the person you're turning into. You're trying to meditate, taking deep breaths, chanting affirmations, even practising empathy with a smile. But one scathing comment from someone, and your composure goes for a toss. 'Yoga helps not just to deal with anger, but do away with it. This is because Yoga brings about transformation of consciousness, which is deeper than mere change in body and mind. Transformation alters our very essence," says Yoga guru Dr N Ganesh Rao, Founder of ACT Yoga. Drawing from ancient texts and decades of practising and teaching Yoga, Dr Rao shares how Yoga helps dissolve anger and stress. These insights are from his talks in the Chat on the Mat series and Feel Happy Program— initiatives of Yoga platform, Hellomyyoga. ANGER—ONE OF THE MIND'S SIX ENEMIES Anger is a disturbance of the mind. On the basis of ancient scriptures, we consider anger (krodha) as one of the shadaripu—six enemies of the mind—along with desire (kaam), greed (lobha), delusional attachment (moha), pride (mada), and jealousy (matsarya). A negative emotion, anger sets off harmful reactions in the body that disturb our health. Since it as an affliction of the mind, Yoga works on it in two ways: 1) By strengthening the mind: First, it ensures the mind does not get angry, by providing an emotional foundation. Second is the response to anger. Both ways, Yoga helps to control anger. 2) Even when the mind gets angry, if you're aware the mind is angry, you're no longer angry! If you start practising awareness, which starts with practising meditation, you automatically achieve total control over all states of the mind, not just anger. Yoga is not just postures—the philosophy that Yoga provides is a guide when it comes to values, our approach to desires in life, goals, ambitions, and much more. With such a rich philosophy at our disposal, our perspective on life shifts. This reduces occasions for stress to occur in the first place. In the Ashtanga Yoga of Patanjali, in all angas (limbs), the practices are geared towards making the mind healthy. When the mind is empowered this way, its threshold for stress becomes naturally very high. HARNESSING THE BREATH-MIND CONNECTION A fact that doesn't get enough recognition is that between the mind and the body, there is the breathing. Philosophically, we explain this as koshas (layers of existence)—between Annamaya kosha (physical body) and Manomaya kosha (mental body), there is Pranamaya kosha (energy body). Prana in its grossest form manifests as breathing. From the disturbed mind, for the disturbance to go to the body, it has to 'pass through' the breathing. Each kind of stress affects the breathing: • When you're angry, the breath is rapid, short and erratic. • When you're sad or depressed, the exhalation becomes longer, you sigh. • When you're surprised, you gasp. • When you're afraid, you choke. This is where Pranayama becomes relevant. We reverse the cause-and-effect relationship. If your breathing is properly controlled, which is to simply make it slow and long, your threshold for bearing stress consistently increases. The mind then always remains calm. As soon as you control your breathing, the mind returns to 'normal'. So, Pranayama is perhaps the most perfect antidote for stress and for psychosomatic ailments. MUST-DO BREATHING PRACTICES Do at least these three practices at home, at work, or wherever possible. 1. Kapalabhati An energising, heat-generating practice that raises the body's BMR (basal metabolic rate) and is the answer to several health issues. People with hyperacidity and high blood pressure need to proceed with caution. Begin with a few minutes and gradually build up to 10. Because it energises, avoid doing it before sleep. In the morning, on an empty stomach, bowel, and bladder is preferable. 2. Nadi Shodhan Kriya This alternate-nostril breathing technique (Anulom Vilom) is the most important. It keeps you in Samattvam sthithi (equilibrium), as described in the definition of Yoga. It limits emotional fluctuations because both hemispheres of the brain are harmonised. It also purifies prana channels in the body, so energy levels start going up, also awareness levels. Start with single-nostril breathing to open the channels, then proceed to both nostrils. 3. Kumbhaka An advanced technique, this is the retention of breath between inhalation and exhalation (or the reverse) and it must be introduced at some point. In this holding-of-the-breath lies the magic of Pranayama, because it creates a temporary disconnect between body and mind, allowing the body to draw on its own healing resources. It is highly rejuvenating. The retention has to be done only to one's comfortable capacity—don't exceed it. According to Hatha Yoga texts, all diseases, mental and physical, can be removed by doing Pranayama practices. It is the secret of good health, of maintaining youth and energy levels. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
