Uruguay cattle investment scam founder detained in $250M fraud case

The Sun18-07-2025
MONTEVIDEO: An Uruguayan court has ordered the pre-trial detention of Pablo Carrasco, founder of the suspected Ponzi scheme Conexion Ganadera, which collapsed last year owing millions to investors. The scheme promised profits from cattle investments in a country with three cows per person.
Prosecutors confirmed Carrasco will remain detained until February 10, 2026, while investigations into fraud and money laundering continue. His wife, Ana Iewdiukow, and the widow of another partner were placed under house arrest.
Uruguay, known for its beef exports and high per-capita cattle numbers, has seen multiple investment scams targeting agriculture. Media reports allege Conexion Ganadera diverted funds meant for livestock, possibly operating as a Ponzi scheme. Two similar firms have also collapsed, affecting 7,000 investors.
'It is still unknown where all the money is,' said prosecutor Enrique Rodriguez. Authorities have frozen $16 million in assets, a fraction of the missing $250 million.
Investor Silvia Bello told AFP, 'The people call it fraud, but it's theft—they stole our savings.' Protests erupted outside the Montevideo court as victims demand justice. - AFP

Ukrainian suspect arrested in Italy over Nord Stream pipeline sabotage

BERLIN: A Ukrainian national has been arrested in Italy for allegedly orchestrating the 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines connecting Russia to Europe. German prosecutors identified the suspect as Serhii K., accusing him of coordinating a cell that planted explosive devices on both Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines. The group allegedly chartered a yacht from Rostock harbour in Germany to execute the underwater attacks that caused massive explosions in September 2022. Western nations initially blamed Russia for the blasts while Moscow pointed fingers back at them during heightened tensions following its invasion of Ukraine. German investigations subsequently revealed a Ukrainian cell comprising five men and one woman who reportedly hired the yacht Andromeda to carry out the operation. Their alleged objective was to destroy the pipelines to prevent Russia from future gas revenue from European sales. Authorities apprehended Serhii K. in Rimini province under a European arrest warrant during early morning hours on Thursday. Prosecutors stated he and his accomplices used forged identity documents to charter the yacht that sailed from Rostock to commit the attacks. German Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig praised investigators for conducting what she termed a 'highly complex operation' resulting in the arrest. The Nord Stream pipelines had long been contentious for enabling Russian gas to bypass eastern European transit routes while making Germany heavily dependent on Moscow's energy. Russia halted gas flows through the pipelines after Western powers imposed sanctions following its February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Seismic institutes detected underwater explosions in September 2022, with four gas leaks discovered near Denmark's Bornholm island where gas erupted onto the sea surface. Two leaks occurred within Denmark's exclusive economic zone while the other two were located in Sweden's waters. German prosecutors previously issued an arrest warrant for another Ukrainian man named Volodymyr Z., a diving instructor last known to reside in Poland. Media reports indicated he was suspected of being among the divers who planted explosives alongside a married couple operating a diving school. This case creates diplomatic complications for Germany and Ukraine given Berlin's strong political and military support for Kyiv against Russian aggression. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has consistently denied any government involvement in the pipeline destruction plot. Recent German and British media reports suggest Washington and Moscow discussed potentially reviving Nord Stream 2 under American management during Ukraine peace negotiations. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated in May that his government would prevent Nord Stream 2 from returning to operation. – AFP

Taiwan ex-lawmaker's son jailed for North Korea fuel shipments in collusion with Singaporean man

TAIPEI: The son of a former Taiwanese lawmaker has been sentenced to 28 months in prison for illegally supplying nearly 3,000 tonnes of fuel oil to heavily sanctioned North Korea. A Taiwanese district court convicted Huang Chung-wei of violating the island's Counter-Terrorism Financing Act, according to the ruling dated Aug 12 and seen by AFP on Thursday (Aug 21). Huang collaborated with Singaporean businessman Kwek Kee Seng, who is wanted by the United States and Taiwan, to transfer around 2,798 tonnes of fuel oil to two ships in Korea Bay, off northeastern China and North Korea, in 2019. The ships were operated by companies blacklisted by the United Nations over their North Korean links, the ruling said. Fuel shipments to Pyongyang are capped as part of a raft of UN sanctions that are a response to North Korea's ballistic missile and nuclear tests. Five others were also found guilty in the case and received jail terms ranging from seven months to two years and one month. They can appeal the sentences. "For their personal gain... they not only disregarded Taiwan's anti-terrorism act, but also seriously affected Taiwan's international image and put Taiwan at risk of sanctions and condemnation from the UN and the international community," the ruling said. It did not say what Huang and the others received in return for supplying the fuel oil to North Korea. Huang is the son of former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator Huang Jen-shu. The DPP is the party of Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te. In 2022, the US State Department offered $5 million for information on Kwek, blaming him for numerous fuel deliveries to North Korea and ship-to-ship transfers as well as money laundering through front companies. Kwek owns the shipping company Swanseas Port Services based in Singapore. - AFP

Hong Kong arrests 10 for running 'upskirt' voyeurism channels

HONG KONG: Hong Kong police said on Thursday (Aug 21) they had arrested six men and four women for running online channels that procured and shared thousands of "upskirt" and other non-consensual images of women. Four of the suspects took clandestine intimate photographs and videos, many in public spaces such as bus stations and shopping malls, before sharing them in a group with nearly 9,000 members, police alleged. The suspects distributed around 15,000 such images over the course of three years, police said, charging users for "VIP" content to make HK$4 million (US$512,000). The online platform, which was not identified, has been blocked and more arrests are possible, police warned. "Every user who downloads these images is also an accomplice," police clinical psychologist Fung Ho-kin said. Hundreds of women were targeted, including 200 students. "The victims will suffer varying degrees of mental trauma," Fung said. The suspects are aged from 20 to 62 and have been charged with a range of offences, including conspiracy to "publish intimate images without consent". - AFP
