Anwar: Vietnam key partner in ASEAN's unity and growth

The Sun2 days ago

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has described Vietnam as a very significant member within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), while speaking to Vietnam News Agency (VNA) correspondents in Kuala Lumpur.
PM Anwar said both Malaysia and he personally value the progress made in cooperation between the two countries.
Talking about Vietnam's role within the bloc, the PM noted that he maintains regular contact with Vietnamese leaders to exchange views on ASEAN-related issues, including the US's new tariff policy and the situation in Myanmar.
Malaysia and Vietnam are working closely together on these issues, he said, noting that Vietnam supports Malaysia's initiative to promote the ASEAN Power Grid.
Reflecting on the growing relationship between the two countries, especially after it was elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership in November 2024, Anwar said there have already been clear results in several fields. He cited enhanced bilateral trade and investment cooperation, including the collaboration between the two countries' national oil and gas corporations.
Addressing the remaining challenges, the Malaysian leader expressed confidence that the two countries are always willing to find solutions together.
Malaysian experts have also shared insights into Vietnam's growing role within ASEAN.
Speaking to the VNA, Dr. Oh Ei Sun, Principal Adviser at Malaysia's Pacific Research Centre, described Vietnam as a dynamic and effective participant at the recent ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur.
He noted that the Vietnamese Prime Minister, in his address at the summit, outlined three key focuses, with a strong emphasis on the need for ASEAN to adopt a development mindset grounded in inclusiveness.
The expert stressed this was a crucial point, highlighting Vietnam as an example. Over the past two to three decades, the country has made a remarkable leap - from a peripheral player to a central and increasingly influential member of ASEAN. This, he said, demonstrates the importance of ensuring all member states, regardless of their level of development, can engage fully and effectively in the bloc.
Citing Vietnam's experience, he expressed confidence that less developed members could also rise with support from stronger economies within ASEAN.
Beyond inclusiveness, Oh said the Vietnamese PM also underlined the importance of connectivity. Thanks to its important location, Vietnam plays a crucial role in linking Southeast Asia's shipping routes and is expected to contribute significantly to the region's railway network.
In terms of resilience, he commended the PM for addressing the issue at a right time. With a large and young population and strong rice production capacity, Vietnam has the potential to boost exports to other ASEAN countries, including Malaysia. He added that ASEAN members could learn valuable lessons regarding food and energy security from Vietnam.
The expert added that the Vietnamese PM's speech on inclusiveness, connectivity, and resilience was relevant and useful to ASEAN members at this year's summit.
Regarding Malaysia-Vietnam relations, Dr Oh highlighted the two countries's elevation of their bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in last November, saying it is a timely decision and the relations have been witnessing many positive changes.
Specifically, more and more Vietnamese students pursue studies at universities in Malaysia; bilateral trade is also on the rise; the two countries coordinate effectively, and make contributions to the development of ASEAN. More importantly, both countries support the admission of Timor-Leste as a new ASEAN member, as well as assist to develop its economy.
Sharing the same view with Dr Oh on Vietnam's role in ASEAN, Collins Chong Yew Keat, an expert on foreign affairs and security at the University of Malaya, affirmed that Vietnam has a very positive influence on the development of ASEAN with its great contributions in many fields.
Vietnam is currently playing an active role in promoting energy transition, digital transformation and ensuring food security. This is a great support for all other ASEAN members as well as the bilateral relationship between Vietnam and Malaysia.
Chong emphasised that it is clear that Vietnam's role in ASEAN's development as well as building a stronger, more resilient, more inclusive and sustainable ASEAN in all areas. This is reflected in Vietnam's spectacular and transformational economic growth rate, improving people's lives as well as its determination to move towards a digital economy, a green economy, and sustainable development.
He expressed his belief that Vietnam will be one of the leading countries in ASEAN and together with other members, including Malaysia, promote the common agenda of a more prosperous, inclusive, unified ASEAN with peace, stability and safety.

Goldman Sachs banker gets two years for international bribery scheme

BROOKLYN (CN) - Tim Leissner, a former managing director at Goldman Sachs, received a sentence of two years in prison after pleading guilty to federal bribery charges - and helping U.S. prosecutors secure a conviction - tied to a multibillion-dollar scheme to rob the fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad, otherwise known as 1MDB. Leissner admitted to his role in bribing officials in Malaysia and Abu Dhabi so that 1MDB would execute lucrative bond deals with the global investment bank. He was ordered to forfeit $43.7 million under his guilty plea. Goldman Sachs itself also faced criminal charges. The bank's Malaysian subsidiary pleaded guilty and the bank paid $5 billion in penalties, according to court documents. Leissner was the government's star witness in the trial and conviction of Ng Chong Hwa, who goes by Roger, the only banker to face trial over the scheme. Ng received a 10-year prison sentence while the plan's purported mastermind and his co-defendant, "playboy" Malaysian businessman Jho Low, remains at large. Malaysia created the 1MDB fund in 2009 to stimulate economic growth, but the project was quickly infiltrated by a vast embezzlement scheme in which proceeds were laundered around the world. The money flowed through art auctions, luxury New York City real estate and Hollywood production companies, one of which produced the Oscar-nominated Martin Scorsese film "The Wolf of Wall Street." Described at trial by another Goldman employee as an aggressive businessman, Leissner admitted he didn't tell the firm about the bribes paid as part of the three bond transactions with 1MDB. He also said he hid the fact that at the center of the bribery scheme was Low, an exceedingly well-connected Malaysian businessman who had already gained tabloid fame for extravagant parties in Las Vegas and New York City. Low, whose full name is Low Taek Jho, paid celebrities, models and musicians to attend the multimillion-dollar blowouts, a marketing executive testified. Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx, Kim Kardashian, P. Diddy, Fergie, Pharell, Ke$ha and Paris Hilton all appeared on guest lists. Leissner was previously married to Kimora Lee Simmons, a model and TV personality with whom he has a son. At Ng's trial, Leissner said the two men were "best friends" who worked closely to obtain and carry out the illicit business: Ng as former head of Goldman's business in Malaysia and Leissner in charge of all of Southeast Asia. Ng meanwhile argued he was made the fall guy, one of about two dozen co-conspirators implicated by the government, many of them high-up government officials or senior to him at Goldman, like Leissner. His trial attorney urged the jury not to take Ng's former boss-turned-cooperator at his word. Leissner, after all, admitted to lying to the FBI in early interviews; said he was married to two women simultaneously - two separate times - and accordingly forged divorce documents; and testified he created a fake email address in his ex-wife's name and used it to communicate with his then-girlfriend for more than a year. Leissner's family supported him in the lead-up to his sentencing, writing letters asking Chief U.S. District Judge Margo Brodie for leniency. Goldman, however, skewered its former employee in its own filing: "Mr. Leissner's serial lies, fraud, and deception at Goldman Sachs continued from the day he first brought the transactions through the firm to the day he left the firm." Strengthening Vietnam-US business partnership in the agricultural sector: Towards sustainable development and trade balance

WASHINGTON D.C, USA - Media OutReach Newswire - 1 June 2025 - Vietnam's Minister of Agriculture and Environment Do Duc Duy plans to lead a delegation with nearly 50 agencies, agribusinesses and associations to explore opportunities to promote trade and import agrifood and timber from the United States during June 1-7, 2025. The delegation expects to participate in business dialogues in Iowa, Ohio, and Washington D.C. Vietnamese agribusinesses are ready to seek U.S. partners to purchase US commodities such as animal feed, fertilizers, biopesticides, meat products, frozen marine seafood, and raw timber. Deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership The visit aims to boost bilateral trade and create new opportunities for Vietnam to import more agrifood and timber from the U.S., helping to balance trade between the two countries. Besides trade, the Vietnamese delegation expects to access to new technologies, hence improving the competitiveness of their own value chains. According to Minister Do Duc Duy, both Vietnam and the U.S. have strong agricultural sectors, but their strengths complement rather than compete with each other. 'With active support of both Vietnam and US government, Vietnam's and US's agriculture have been increasingly connected. Even we're now sharing the same supply chains, boosting our competitiveness, thereby supporting both producers and consumers in each country'. The Minister emphasized, 'Vietnamese agribusinesses have cooperated strongly with the Government to increase the purchase of agrifood and timber products from the U.S. This effort helps balance bilateral trade and strengthens the agricultural supply chain between the two countries, hence contributing to global food security.' Earlier, in September 2024, the largest U.S. agribusiness delegation in history visited Hanoi to mark the one-year anniversary of the Vietnam–US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Led by USDA Deputy Secretary Alexis Taylor, the delegation was consisted of representatives from nine state governments, 35 businesses, and 25 major industry associations. Their visit underscored the growing interest of U.S. businesses in Vietnam market. Beyond boosting trade, both countries work to build inclusive development, enhance rural resilience, and promote sustainable production and clean energy. A key highlight is the 'International Year of Women Farmers 2026' initiative, co-led by the U.S. and Vietnam and adopted by a United Nations resolution in May 2024. Following the resolution, Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Environment partnered with the U.S. Mission to ASEAN and the USDA to launch the initiative with a series of events. As part of the program, two American female farmers – Jennifer Schmidt and Jaclyn Wilson – traveled to Southeast Asia to engage with other female farmers, with Vietnam as their first destination. Driving global economic growth Today, American consumers increasingly choose Vietnamese agrifood, especially spices, fruits, seafood, and furniture. Meanwhile, Vietnamese producers rely more on U.S. imports, including cornmeal, soybeans, meat, dairy, lumber, livestock equipment, and seedlings. Vietnam's farmers are enhanced with better skills and knowledge to adopt advanced American technologies to boost production, improve produce quality and protect the environment. High-quality materials and cutting-edge technologies from the U.S. are helping Vietnam build more competitive and sustainable supply chains. Vietnam's agriculture continues to deepen partnerships with U.S. stakeholders, from federal and state governments to associations and businesses. The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has signed multiple agreements with U.S. authorities and state governments. Vietnamese agribusinesses have signed 18 Memorandums of Understanding since 2020 to purchase agrifood from the U.S., totaling 6 billion USD, with half already implemented. Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has created favorable conditions for U.S. agricultural exporters to enter the Vietnam market. Vietnam has completed registration procedures for 509 meat and meat exporters and 232 seafood exporters from US to Vietnam; no backlog remains to be processed. Both countries are actively working to open their fruit markets to each other, enabling exporters to reach new customers and for consumers to enjoy the distinctive flavors of both tropical and temperate regions. Vietnam is also among the first eight Asian countries to approve biotechnology-based plant seeds from the U.S. So far, it has approved all 61 biotechnology applications dossiers submitted by U.S. companies. The two sides have also agreed on transparent and practical methods, procedures, and protocols for animal and plant quarantine. These agreements help pave the way for the development of the agrifood markets in both countries. In addition, the new Decree 73/2025/ND-CP, effective from March 31, 2025, cuts import tarriff to 0% for agrifood products that US has strong competiveness. As a result, agricultural exports from both sides have grown steadily, by around 10% annually over the past decade. Holistic and sustainable cooperation The visit of Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Environment delegation to the U.S. in June 2025 reflects Vietnam's strong commitment to building trust and strengthening strategic partnerships by promoting the shared agricultural supply chains of the two countries. The visit also aims to deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership as the two countries celebrate 30 years of diplomatic relations. In an interview with Vietnamese press, the USDA emphasized: 'Any agricultural trade imbalances are largely sector-specific and influenced by factors such as regulations, consumer demand, and supply chain dynamics. Ensuring reciprocal market access and reducing tariffs remain top priorities to sustain long-term trade growth.' Dr. Nguyen Do Anh Tuan, General Director of the International Cooperation Department under Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, expressed concern over President Trump administration's announcement of a 10% tariff from April 2, 2025, and the potential for a 46% reciprocal tariff on Vietnamese exports from July 9, 2025. This tarriff imposition has alarmed not only Vietnamese exporters but also American businesses. Dr. Tuan explained: 'Beyond shrinking profit margins and weakening business competitiveness on both sides, higher reciprocal tariffs will raise prices for essential food products in the U.S. This action not only hurts American consumers but also potentially disrupts the supply chain that both governments and private sectors of both sides have worked hard to build in recent years. Agrifood is a necessity goods, and hiking price of agrifood will significantly burden American average-income households.'
