SEDCE partners with RAW Energy to bring hybrid biomass fuel to Sarawak
KUCHING (June 20): RAW Energy, a global provider of sustainable fuels, has appointed SEDC Energy (SEDCE) as its exclusive partner to promote and distribute its Hybrid Tropical Grass (HTG) pellets in Sarawak.
The HTG pellets will be supplied to power generation facilities and other users requiring scalable, clean energy solutions.
The partnership also aims to bring local communities to be part of the sustainability agenda by providing the HTG feedstock through new cultivations.
RAW Energy Group chief executive officer Ramsay Wilson welcomed the collaboration, stating that the partnership between SEDCE and RAW Energy represents more than just a strategic business alignment.
'This heralds a transformative era in renewable energy adoption across Sarawak.
'By embracing cutting-edge biomass technology, SEDCE is setting an inspiring precedent for other global communities striving to balance industrial growth with environmental preservation,' he said in a statement.
He further explained that their HTG pellets are revolutionising the biomass sector and will redefine energy benchmarks on an international scale.
'With a carbon cycle measured in days versus decades and a thermal energy content exceeding that of wood pellets, we offer a glimpse into a future where sustainable energy sources can outperform and replace traditional fuels such as coal and wood pellets in terms of ecological impact, efficiency, and scalability.'
Ramsay also highlighted that Sarawak's use of RAW Energy's biomass resources contributes to building a circular economy by converting agricultural products into valuable energy commodities.
'This initiative will create a ripple effect, encouraging further investment in green technologies. This will also bolster the region's economic and environmental resilience.
'Sarawak is positioned to contribute significantly to the global dialogue on renewable energy, showcasing how regional resources can be harnessed for planetary benefit,' he added.
HTG is a sterile hybrid combination of Pennisetum Purpureum (Napier) and Pennisetum Americanum (Pearl millet) grass, which was imported under permit by the founders of RAW Energy back in 2014 and is grown on large scale farms in Bintulu.
HTG is a fast-growing high yielding Energy Grass that perfectly harnesses the power of tropical photosynthesis and rainfall and is grown on unproductive marginal land without the 'food versus energy' conflict.
SEDCE, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation, views this partnership as a significant step in Sarawak's journey towards greener energy.
SEDCE chief executive officer Robert Hardin described the partnership as a crucial step in Sarawak's decarbonisation journey toward achieving the Net Zero 2050 target by utilising its biomass resources for energy generation.
'RAW's hybrid tropical grass does not compete with our food source, which aligns with UNSDG 15 that promotes the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems and halts land degradation.
'We also plan to introduce the cultivation of this hybrid grass, along with RAW Energy, to rural communities in phases,' he said.
Both SEDCE and RAW Energy recently entered the agreement, paving way for another path towards decarbonisation efforts not only for Sarawak but also Malaysia and the region for Net Zero 2050.

Saudi's ACWA Power reaffirms S'wak green hydrogen partnership, eyes NEOM-scale development

According to a press release, the visit underscores ACWA Power's commitment to replicate the scale and ambition of its flagship NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia for Sarawak. Currently under development, NEOM is the world's largest green hydrogen project, targeting 4GW of renewable power to produce 600 tonnes of green hydrogen per day. The US$8.4 billion initiative aims to position Saudi Arabia as a global leader in the hydrogen economy ― a vision aligned with Sarawak's clean energy vision. The collaboration is also part of ACWA Power's US$10 billion investment commitment to Malaysia, announced during the Asean-GCC Summit in May this year, with Sarawak expected to benefit from infrastructure, technology transfer, and economic spillovers. In Sarawak, ACWA Power and SEDCE are jointly exploring the development of a green hydrogen facility powered by up to 4GW of captive renewable energy, delivering 2GW of electrolyser capacity for both export and domestic decarbonisation. The companies formalised the basis of this collaboration through an agreement signed last year. Both parties are also in discussions with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to explore floating solar projects in Batang Ai and Murum hydroelectric dams, and with the State Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications and the State Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability to ensure regulatory alignment. The cooperation supports Sarawak's Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), and the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (HETR), while strengthening clean energy ties between Malaysia and Saudi Arabia. Also present at the meeting were Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain, general manager Datu Abdul Hadi, chief investment officer Haji Zainnurain Othman, SEDCE CEO Dennis Harun Wong, ACWA Power senior advisor to the chairman Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar, country director Mathew Chandapillai, executive vice-president of business development (Middle East/Global Water) Udyan Seth, director of business development and projects Azhari Sulaiman, and Advisor to Chairman ACWA Power Co Dato JIV Sammanathan. Hydrogen Refuelling Facility Now Operational At Petros MFS Batu Kawa
GENERAL KUCHING, July 15 (Bernama) -- The hydrogen (H₂) refuelling facility at Petros Multifuel Station (MFS) Batu Kawa is currently undergoing testing and commissioning, marking another major milestone in Sarawak's ongoing journey towards a hydrogen-powered future. SEDC Energy (SEDCE) said that the flagship station, built to meet international safety standards, is part of the Petros MFS Batu Kawa development. It offers a range of services including conventional fuels, electric vehicle (EV) charging, hydrogen refuelling, and quick-serve restaurants for nearby communities and road users. 'The station receives 120 kilogrammes of hydrogen molecules via tube trailers from the Darul Hana H₂ production plant, located about 10 kilometres away. The plant has a daily production capacity of up to 150 kilogrammes of hydrogen molecules. 'As part of the commissioning process, five Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) managed by SEDC Energy (SEDCE) are being refuelled at the station to ensure all systems meet safety and performance standards," it said in a statement. It added that the vehicles are currently used by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Premiers, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian and SEDC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Husain. It also said that recently Dr Sim visited the MFS Batu Kawa station to witness the refuelling of his Toyota Mirai as part of the ongoing testing exercise. During the visit, he was also briefed on a historic milestone achieved on July 4, Malaysia's first interstation delivery of green hydrogen from Darul Hana to Batu Kawa which may also be the first of its kind in ASEAN. SEDC Energy (SEDCE), the new energy arm of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) was established in 2019 to develop and drive Sarawak's hydrogen value chain and downstream oil and gas retail business under the Petros MFS brand. To date, SEDCE said 10 MFS stations are fully operational across Sarawak, including in Darul Hana (Kuching), Daro, Kanowit, Kuala Matu, Brooke Drive (Sibu), Selangau, Tatau, Kapit, Sungai Asap and Jepak. Four additional flagship stations are currently in the pipeline for Bintulu, Miri, Sibu, and Sri Aman.
