After Pahalgam, Punjab extended help, not hate

Time of India27-04-2025

Jalandhar: Notwithstanding its political fluidity, Punjab's organic and nuanced reaction after the
Pahalgam massacre
has once again demonstrated that it remains one of the most socially and communally stable states in the country.
There were no incidents where the state govt or official machinery had to make significant efforts for social-communal amity. There were several instances where groups or activists offered assistance to any Kashmiri student in distress.
Incidents of hate speeches or targeting of Muslims in general, or Kashmiris in particular, occurred in some states, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Rajasthan, and a few other places. A restaurant worker was killed, and his co-worker was injured in Agra, UP, and the Kashatariya Gau Raksha Dal claimed responsibility, calling it retribution for the Pahalgam massacre.
In Rajasthan, Hawa Mahal BJP MLA Balmukundacharya was booked for allegedly putting a poster inside a mosque premises in Jaipur during a protest against the massacre. In comparison, two aspects of the reaction in Punjab were clearly visible: unequivocal and strong condemnation of the terror attack and solidarity with the victims by all quarters, but no hate for the Kashmiris or Muslims, or holding the community accountable, and refusing to get carried away with the "sentiment" of collective punishment.
When Kendri Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Chandigarh, posted a message on the night of April 24, asking Kashmiri students in Chandigarh and surrounding areas in trouble and requiring immediate help to contact and reach personally on its campus, it appeared to express the larger reaction.
Other Sikh groups also responded quickly, posting similar messages on social media or reaching out to them on the ground. Later, it provided numbers of activities across districts, and there were more such messages from different quarters.
Administration and police authorities reached out to Kashmiri students and their institutions and issued advisories, but they did not need to manage the situations that occurred in a few other states.
Amid such an atmosphere in the state, the migration of Muslims from UP to Punjab, the only Sikh majority state in the country, has increased in the last few years.
While Punjab remains politically fluid, the state has also been witnessing the mobilisation of farmers and others on the ground on other issues, including the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib. However, the people in the state have been careful in reacting to provocations. Communities and caste groups have been responding to different issues carefully, not allowing them to become one community versus the other.
"Punjabis have been treading quite carefully. In Punjab, no party or group had to make any extra effort to make people react the way they have reacted. It was an organic response from Punjab to express complete solidarity with the victims but not hold Muslims or Kashmiris responsible as a community. This is the influence of the Sikh Gurus' teachings on the moral fabric of the people across communities," said political-social commentator Rakesh Shantidoot. MSID:: 120669982 413 |

BJP celebrates 11 yrs of Modi govt, INDIA bloc snubs ‘misgovernance'

Ranchi: on Tuesday held various programmes across Jharkhand to mark 11 years of govt at the Centre. In Ranchi, senior party leader and former Union minister Smriti Irani attended a series of programmes hailing the Modi-led govt's achievements to put India on the global map. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Ruling alliance INDIA bloc alliance parties, however, criticised the Modi govt, saying it was misgovernance during which the country has seen scores of atrocities against sections of society. Irani enumerated how the last 11 years have been decisive under Modi's rule for India to become an emerging economy. She cited the historic events and achievements over the last decade right from the abrogation of Article 370 to Operation Sindoor. "The nation's global footprint across various sectors, including supplying Covid-19 vaccines to 160 countries, is hailed by one and all," she said. Irani also said, "In 11 years, the Modi govt achieved the impossible, even forcing the opposition to praise. Today, the world looks at India with respect. The strength of the Indian flag has increased globally. Through the Jan Dhan accounts, 500 million people were benefited by govt schemes, 810 million people received free foodgrain every month and 150 million homes got tap water, among others," she said. Dubbing the 11 years of Modi govt as misgovernance, JMM spokesperson Tanuj Khatri said, "BJP is unaware of the ground reality as it can't hear the cries of the people, their struggles, and the questions the govt is yet to answer, be it on jobs or farm crisis among others. Talking about Jharkhand, tribals are demanding the Sarna code but the Centre continues to ignore them. The state assembly had unanimously passed a resolution in favour of the code, but Modi govt continues to block it. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now " He added, "The prolonged violence in Manipur, particularly the brutalities faced by women, expose the govt's apathy. The PM's silence in such a grave constitutional crisis reflects not only administrative failure but moral bankruptcy. The list is long." State Congress president Keshav Mahto Kamlesh added, "In 11 years, BJP worked towards demeaning the constitutional norms and institutions. Crimes against women have nearly doubled according to the NCRB data and the PM couldn't dare to speak on foreign debt and India's isolation due to its flawed foreign policy among others. Central govt's policies, not only led to a rise in unemployment, but workers' rights have also been curtailed. "

‘Urban Naxal' is a fictitious term coined by BJP to gain traction: Maha Cong prez

Nagpur: Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal said the term "Urban Naxal" is one conjured up by BJP as part of its propaganda and added there is "no such thing as Urban Naxal". During last year's polls, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had alleged that Congress neta Rahul Gandhi is surrounded by Urban Naxals. Talking to TOI, Sapkal said, "Who is an Urban Naxal? Do they carry weapons like Maoists? The truth is no such thing exists. BJP conjures up such buzzwords only to gain electoral traction. The saffron party indulges in such things when it wants to divert attention from real issues." Fadnavis' statement made last year on Gandhi and urban naxals created a national stir, with both national parties engaging in a prolonged verbal duel. Talking about the upcoming local body polls, Sapkal said BJP's "false promises" will come to haunt it. One such issue, Sapkal pointed out, is the Mahayuti's 'Ladki Bahin' scheme. He criticised the ruling alliance for failing to deliver on their promise of increasing the monthly financial aid for women from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,100. "They started Rs 1,500 per month dole for women and promised a hike it up to Rs 2,100 if voted to power," Sapkal noted, adding the increased amount has yet to be implemented. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He further alleged the govt is attempting to reduce the number of beneficiaries, with even the existing Rs 1,500 being withdrawn in some cases. Sapkal warned this failure to fulfil promises could have significant repercussions for the BJP-led Mahayuti in upcoming elections, including local body polls and major elections in 2029. "Instead of Ladki Bahin, we now have angry bahins. Our sisters have been fooled by BJP-led Mahayuti," he remarked, highlighting the growing discontent among women who feel let down by the govt's unfulfilled promises. In addition to the Ladki Bahin scheme, Sapkal criticised the govt's handling of the agricultural sector, particularly in providing relief to farmers affected by unseasonal rains. "Many farmers are still facing financial distress. It is very sad," he said, emphasising the need for immediate action to support those who lost their crops and struggling to make ends meet. Sapkal said there is growing unrest in the public because of corruption in Mahayuti. "Many public projects are being announced without any logic. It seems infrastructure projects are more for the benefit of contractors rather than the people, who have now seen through this facade," said Sapkal.

UP: Party worker slaps SSP chief Mahendra Rajbhar multiple times during public event

Yadav uses the abbreviation PDA for 'pichde' (backward classes), Dalits, and 'alpsankhyak' (minorities). After a video of the assault went viral on social media, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav condemned the incident as 'another example of atrocities and insult' on PDA, alleging the BJP's complicity in it. Jaunpur (UP), Jun 10 (PTI) A party worker reportedly slapped Mahendra Rajbhar, national president of the Suheldev Swabhiman Party (SSP), repeatedly soon after garlanding the latter on stage during a public gathering in Uttar Pradesh's Jaunpur district. The incident took place at Ashapur village under the Jalalpur police station limits during a function held on the occasion of Maharaja Suheldev's victory day. The event was organised to perform 'bhoomi pujan' for installing a statue of the revered Rajbhar icon in the Rajbhar-dominated Zafarabad Assembly constituency. Mahendra Rajbhar, a native of Mau district, was the chief guest at the event. To the audience's shock, Brijesh Rajbhar, a party worker, first garlanded Mahendra Rajbhar and then slapped him multiple times in full public view, causing chaos at the event. Following the assault, Mahendra Rajbhar accused Uttar Pradesh Cabinet minister and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) president Om Prakash Rajbhar of orchestrating the attack. However, no statement has yet been issued by Om Prakash Rajbhar or the SBSP in response to the acquisition. After the incident, Mahendra Rajbhar left the venue and filed a complaint at the Jalalpur police station, naming Brijesh Rajbhar. Speaking to reporters, he claimed that Brijesh Rajbhar met Om Prakash Rajbhar four to five days before the event and that the attack was planned under the latter's direction. 'Brijesh was once a worker in my party, but he currently holds no official position. I don't know how or why he came to the event or who invited him. There is no internal dispute in the party or any financial disagreement,' Mahendra Rajbhar said, adding that though many people were present at the event, Brijesh Rajbhar was the one who attacked him. Confirming that Mahendra Rajbhar has lodged a complaint, Jalalpur SHO Triveni Singh said the viral video of the incident was under review as part of the investigation. Reacting to the incident, Akhilesh Yadav alleged BJP's complicity in the attack, which he termed another example of growing atrocities on PDA. 'The violent attack on senior leader Mahendra Rajbhar is yet another condemnable example of the growing insults and atrocities faced by the PDA society under BJP rule,' Yadav posted in Hindi on X. 'If the BJP thinks it can sustain its divisive politics by breaking communities from within, it is gravely mistaken. If the BJP is not complicit in this attack, the assailant must be immediately arrested and punished for his actions,' Yadav said. 'Violence is a manifestation of desperation. The BJP should remember that such acts will not demoralise the PDA but strengthen its resolve further. Long live the Constitution, long live the PDA,' he added. Mahendra Rajbhar was previously associated with the SBSP and served as its national vice-president before parting ways ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections to form his own party. He had accused Om Prakash Rajbhar of deviating from the party's mission and prioritising personal financial gains. In the current Uttar Pradesh Assembly, SBSP's Jagdish Narayan Rai represents Zafarabad. He won the 2022 election as part of an alliance with the Samajwadi Party.
