‘Will Shake Ground Beneath People...': Rajasthan Minister On Release Of ‘Udaipur Files' Film
Rajasthan Minister Jogaram Patel criticised the previous Congress government for failing in the 2022 murder of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal.
Rajasthan Minister Jogaram Patel launched a scathing attack on the previous Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government over the murder of Udaipur-based tailor Kanhaiya Lal in 2022 and said that it was 'one of the biggest failures" of the former regime.
His remarks came amid the continuing legal battle over the release of the film 'Udaipur Files – Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder", which is based on the high-profile killing. The film's release remains suspended and is awaiting the decision of the Centre-appointed panel to hear objections against the film.
'The Kanhaiya Lal murder case is one of the biggest failures of the previous Congress government. Just to stay in the headlines, former CM Ashok Gehlot recently claimed that the trial in this case is not taking place," he said.
He further said that the trial of the culprits is underway and the government is pursuing the case effectively.
"The chargesheet has already been filed and the trial is underway. As the matter is sub-judice, I cannot comment further. The government is pursuing the case effectively and we are fully confident that the trial will conclude soon and the culprits will be awarded capital punishment," he added.
Speaking at the event, Patel also issued a veiled warning regarding the potential impact of the film.
'The matter related to the film is in the court. Since it is sub-judice, I cannot comment much. I can only say the day this film is released, it will shake the ground beneath many people."
The film, Udaipur Files– Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder, remains under a judicial stay following an order by the Delhi High Court on July 10. The matter reached the Supreme Court on Wednesday and it deferred the case to July 21 and instructed all parties to await the decision of a central government-appointed panel.
When the filmmakers argued that the Delhi High Court was wrong to block the film's release as it violated their right to free speech, the Supreme Court responded by saying that the right to life (Article 21) takes priority over the right to freedom of speech and expression (Article 19).
The Court said it expects the Centre's committee to make a decision 'immediately, without loss of time," and has scheduled the next hearing for Monday, keeping in mind the urgency raised by the film's makers.
The film depicts the 2022 murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur, Rajasthan, who was killed by Mohammad Riyaz Attari and Ghaus Mohammad. The killing, carried out in broad daylight, had sparked national outrage.

West Bengal Governor to move Supreme Court over control of state universities
In another escalation of the ongoing tussle between the West Bengal government and the Raj Bhavan over higher education governance, Governor CV Ananda Bose on Saturday said he plans to seek clarity from the Supreme Court on whether ultimate authority over state universities lies with the chancellor (governor) or the state government. The move comes after a meeting between Bose and vice chancellors (VCs) of state-run universities at the Raj Bhavan, convened to address key issues in the state's higher education sector. The meeting was attended by nine VCs, with most others remaining absent. Several VCs who skipped the meeting claimed they faced obstructions from the higher education department, while others alleged they were gheraoed or faced hostile conditions on campus. Some sought appointments with the governor to explain their absence. Sources in Raj Bhavan suggest absenteeism has not been taken lightly. 'This is an issue that requires clarification. What is the role of the chancellor or the role of the government? The Supreme Court will be approached to determine who holds the ultimate authority over state universities — the chancellor (governor) or the state government,' Bose told reporters at the Raj Bhavan. The meeting had a wide-ranging agenda, from digital reforms and manpower gaps to implementation of NEP 2020 and awareness on cybersecurity and drug addiction.

Govt. for radical change in education sector: Deputy CM Bhatti
Fundamental rights in a democratic society — freedom of expression and debate — which have been missing in Osmania University for a decade, were restored with Congress coming to power in December 2023, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka said on Saturday. The government's doors were opened to all viewpoints and people's fear to express their opinion vanished, he said, recalling his interactions with women, students and diverse groups in his Adilabad-Khammam People's March. For Mr. Vikramarka, universities should encourage ideological diversity — from Marxism to Maoism to Gandhianism — as that's what constitutes a true university, he said, and asserted that coercion, pressure or suppression are not part of the State government's policy. 'I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it,' he quoted French writer and philosopher Voltaire, to supplement his idea. According to Mr. Vikramarka, who was speaking at the annual day celebrations of University College of Arts & Social Sciences, Osmania University here, the government's focus is on bringing about radical changes in the education sector. He said that the journey began with the appointments of Vice Chancellors, faculty recruitment, hike in diet charges and cosmetic charges in State residential schools, the common diet menu scheme recommended by top doctors and nutritionists, and allocation of ₹500 crore for Koti Women's College, now renamed as Veeranari Chakali Ilamma University. The next thing in the pipeline is building skills. Constructing Telangana's first skill university in 'Future City', 100 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) being transformed as Advanced Technology Centres, and Young India Residential Schools in every constituency with an outlay of ₹200 crore each. He maintained that real development in the State is possible only through education, and especially English medium education to withstand global competition. Findings from the comprehensive socio-economic, political, educational and caste survey conducted in the State, he said, also showed that education is more crucial for development than land, which is a foundational resource for development. Mr. Vikramarka was all praise for the legacy of Osmania University which produced former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, and many bureaucrats, scientists and politicians for Telangana and beyond. Accepting Vice Chancellor Kumar Molugaram and Principal C. Kaseem's request for an open auditorium in the university, he promised recommending it to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. He also assured that more job notifications would be released soon.

Police rescue man abducted by female friend for ransom; four arrested
The Ashok Nagar police have recently cracked an abduction case and rescued a 37-year-old manager of a private company who was abducted by his female friend and her associates demanding ransom. The police managed to arrest four among the accused identified as Mohammed Asif Risaldar, 42, Mohammed Sohail Sheikh, 25, both from R.T. Nagar; Salman Pasha, 22, from D.J. Halli; and Mohammed Nawaz, 27, from K.G. Halli, on Saturday. The female friend of the victim identified as Mahima Vat, who is the prime accused in the case along with her three associates are on the run. Efforts are on to track them down, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Division) Hakay Akshay Machhindra, said on Saturday. According to the police, the victim, identified as Lawrence Melwin, worked as a manager at a Dubai-based travel company and had come to Bengaluru on a vacation and stayed at his parent's house before checking into a hotel on Residency Road. The incident came to light when the victim's mother Leena Antony filed a complaint on July 16, claiming that her son, who was staying at the hotel was missing mysteriously and not responding to calls since July 14. The Ashok Nagar police registered a missing persons case and launched the probe. During the investigation, it was revealed that on July 14, Melwin left in a car with Mahima allegedly booked by her. However, near Koramangala, the driver took a detour and he stopped a few meters ahead where two others got inside the car. Melwin's face was allegedly covered with a cloth mask, and he was beaten up. The suspects allegedly took his phone and a bag containing ₹1 lakh. He was then taken to a service apartment where he was tied up and tortured physically demanding ₹50 lakh in cash for his release. Melwin tried to negotiate it down to ₹20 lakh, but to no avail. Melwin told the police that the suspects used to lock him inside the room and feed him before going out. Melwin even tried to starve himself, thinking they would take him to the hospital. When he agreed to pay ₹50 lakh, they allegedly demanded ₹2.5 crore. The case took an interesting turn on July 22 when a woman from a neighbouring apartment heard Melwin's cries for help after the accused left. With the woman's help, he called his sister and informed her that he was in trouble. When his captors returned they realised that something was amiss and forced him into a car before dropping him off near Yeshwantpur. This was because the police had managed to arrest the four people who were keeping a watch on the apartment after tracing them through local intelligence. The police are now on the manhunt for the accused who are on the run.
