New Pumas star Aaron Ramsey faces an invisible enemy in Mexico City -- the altitude

MEXICO CITY — An invisible enemy awaits former Arsenal and Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey in Mexico City — the altitude. New Pumas star Aaron Ramsey faces an invisible enemy in Mexico City -- the altitude
Ramsey was introduced on Thursday as a new player for the UNAM Pumas, who play their home matches at estadio Olimpico, which sits at an altitude of 2,240 meters above sea level.
The Mexican Apertura tournament starts next week, although Pumas will not play their first home game until July 20.
'The altitude is something I have that I have definitely have to get used to,' Ramsey said at a media conference. 'I am doing well at the moment I need to take the next steps and hopefully I will be to be on the pitch as soon as possible to help my teammates. I hope it will be very soon.'
The 34-year-old Ramsey arrived in Mexico City on Tuesday for his medical and signed his one-year contract on Thursday.
'This league is very technical, with great players and over the last I've really tried to get as much information as I could from certain people and, you know, the internet and things like that,' added Ramsey.
Pumas is considered one of the four most popular teams in the country although it has not won a title since the Clausura 2011 tournament.
'I have had pressure throughout my career. I've played for some of the best teams in the world, and there's an expectation to win,' Ramsey said. 'I'm sure here is no different, so. I know what this club can do, and hopefully I can play my part to be successful.'
Ramsey finished the final three matches of the 2024-25 season as Cardiff City's interim manager after they were relegated from the Championship to League One in Wales.
With 86 appearances for Wales, the midfielder helped his country reach the Euro 2016 semifinals. Ramsay has previously said he hopes to continue playing for the national side as it attempts to reach the World Cup in the U.S., Mexico and Canada next year.

'Ab toh retire ho gaya': Gautam Gambhir can't stop laughing after Rishabh Pant mentions Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma's retirement from Test cricket was on the cards. After his failure in Australia as both captain and batter, the 38-year-old was on borrowed time. In fact, after Ravichandran Ashwin retired at the end of the Melbourne Test, a school of thought suggested Rohit was next. Reports began to emerge as well. A couple of months later, in an interview with Michael Clarke, Rohit shared his excitement for the upcoming England tour and outlined a clear plan for success. This sparked a belief that the captain still had the drive left to play cricket. From left: Rohit Sharma, Gautam Gambhir, Rishabh Pant(AFP) However, the hopes were extinguished on May 7, when Rohit casually announced his retirement from Test cricket. What and how it happened is something we may never know, but it was evident that perhaps Rohit was pushed towards that decision. Nonetheless, two months have passed since, and the Indian Test team is embarking on a journey with new captain Shubman Gill leading the charge. But the impact Rohit has left on this team is still being felt. When Rishabh Pant, along with the rest of the Indian team, was leaving for England, Pant told one of the reporters, who asked about Rohit's whereabouts, 'who garden mein hain'. Even on The Kapil Sharma Show, when Pant was quizzed about 'who is that one Jethani in the team that calls all the shots. Someone who orders everyone around, even if they are just taking advantage of their seniority,' pat came the reply: "Rohit bhai is like that. Rohit bhai comes on strong". All in jest. India head coach Gautam Gambhir, who was also one of the guests, along with Pant, Yuzvendra Chahal and Abhishek Sharma burst into laughter, saying: "Ab toh retire ho gaya. Yeah, take his name now that he has retired." Watch the clip below: Rohit has been a guest on The Kapil Sharma show twice – once after India lost the 2023 World Cup and the second time, when they won it. Currently, the former India Test captain, along with wife Ritika, daughter Samiera and son Ahaan, is holidaying with his family in Italy, posting pictures of some of the most picturesque monuments in the country. Rohit was set to return to cricket in August for an ODI tour of Bangladesh, but with the series now cancelled, Rohit will be back in action next in October, unless the BCCI slots in some other limited-overs series in the same window.

Will Kylian Mbappe play in Real Madrid vs Dortmund in FIFA Club World Cup?

It is too soon to say whether Kylian Mbappe will start in Real Madrid's Club World Cup quarterfinal match against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, coach Xabi Alonso said, as the French forward continues his recovery from gastroenteritis. Mbappe made his tournament debut on Tuesday as Real Madrid edged Juventus 1-0 to reach the quarterfinals after missing all of the group stage. 'He's getting better. He's been improving over the last three days,' Alonso told reporters at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Friday. 'Tomorrow morning we will be deciding if he will be part of the initial 11.' Mbappe came off the bench as a substitute in the second half of the Spanish side's 1-0 win over Juventus in Miami on Tuesday, earning wild applause in a scene that underscored his global appeal at the U.S.-hosted tournament. Mbappe was briefly hospitalised early in the tournament, isolated from his teammates as he recovered. Alonso's team has leaned on Gonzalo Garcia to deputise in his absence, as the 21-year-old academy graduate has recorded three goals - including Tuesday's winner - and an assist in a breakout performance at the competition. 'I think (Garcia and Mbappe) could complement each other and if it's something that is required, it's not something I'm going to turn a blind eye to,' said Alonso. Madrid faces a Dortmund team in solid form on Saturday, after the German side held off a stirring second-half fightback from Monterrey 2-1 this week to book its spot in the final eight. 'Dortmund is a very good team. As soon as (coach Niko Kovac) was at the helm, they were growing and developing and on the rise,' said Alonso. 'We are facing a tough opponent... It's gonna be tight tomorrow.'

Aslam Sher Khan unhappy as revival of Obaidullah Cup hits roadblock

New Delhi: Former hockey player Aslam Sher Khan is baffled why the Obaidullah Cup tournament is not been given the kind of treatment it deserves since it was a 'part of Bhopal's heritage.' Khan, hero of India's World Cup win in 1975, alleged that apathy of Madhya Pradesh government officials is affecting the revival of the tournament. He informed that a committee formed under his chairmanship of Aslam sent e-mails to the state sports director and Bhopal's commissioner but did not receive any response. 'This is not just a hockey tournament but a part of Bhopal's heritage. We formed the organising committee after taking permission from Hockey India to revive it this year and it was to be held in May but despite repeated contacts, there was no response from the state government,' Khan told PTI Bhasha. He said that the tournament was earlier scheduled to be held from April 14 but due to the repair of the Aishbagh stadium, it was decided to hold it on May 22. 'We had invited 12 teams who had confirmed their participation, including Army XI, Railway Sports Promotion Board, Indian Air Force, Indian Navy, Hockey Maharashtra, Hockey Uttar Pradesh, Hockey Jharkhand.' The Obaidullah Cup, which shaped the careers of several international players like Ehsan Muhammad, Latifur Rehman, Akhtar Hussain, Inam-ur-Rehman, Syed Jalaluddin Rizvi and Sameer Dad, began in 1931 under the patronage of the Nawab of Bhopal State. Khan, a former Congress MP from Betul, said that this tournament has suffered due to the internal disputes between Madhya Pradesh Hockey and Bhopal Hockey Association. 'By implementing the Indian Olympic Association's one state, one unit formula, the recognition of Bhopal Hockey Association along with other organisations was revoked, although it was a founding member of the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) since 1925. The headquarters of MP Hockey shifted to Jabalpur, which had no interest in the Obedulla Cup,' he alleged. Hockey India sources said that permission was indeed given to organise the tournament, but the responsibility of organizing it lies with the All India Obedulla Khan Cup Hockey Tournament Committee.
