Jubilee Hills bypoll set to reshape Hyderabad politics: Congress eyes gains, BRS banks on legacy, BJP seeks foothold
HYDERABAD: After a lull of over a year, electoral heat is returning to Hyderabad with the upcoming by-election in the high-profile Jubilee Hills assembly constituency. Triggered by the recent death of BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath, the bypoll—likely to be held well before the Dec deadline—has become a prestige contest for all three major parties: Congress, BRS, and BJP.
For the ruling Congress, the bypoll is a chance to open its account in the state capital, where it failed to win a single seat in the 2023 elections. With the party having recently snatched the Secunderabad Cantonment seat from BRS in a by-election held alongside the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, it now hopes to replicate that success in Jubilee Hills.
The constituency also holds added significance for the BJP, as it falls under the Secunderabad parliamentary segment, represented by Union minister and state BJP chief G Kishan Reddy.

Cong eyes reshuffle
But the Congress isn't just eyeing a seat—it's eyeing a cabinet reshuffle. With no Greater Hyderabad representation in CM Revanth Reddy's current council of ministers, a win here could open the door for a new face in the cabinet. That has triggered intense lobbying from various castes and communities.
Prominent among them are Muslim leaders, who argue that the bypoll gives the Congress a real chance to fulfil its social justice plank.
'There's not a single Muslim minister in the cabinet, despite our community making up 12.5% of the population,' said a senior minority leader. 'Fielding a Muslim candidate here will show the party means what it says—jitni aabadi, utna haq (proportionate representation). Otherwise, the community may drift back to the BRS,' he opined.
TPCC working president and former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin, who lost from Jubilee Hills in 2023, is seeking a second shot.
'I never left the constituency and have even filed a case on EVM irregularities,' Azharuddin said. 'My entire polling booth network is intact and active,' he claimed.
Many from Congress to select
Other contenders from the minority community include former minister and current advisor Mohd Ali Shabbir, Faheem Qureshi of the Telangana Minor-ities Residential Schools Society, Wakf Board chairman Syed Azmathullah Husseini, Indian Overseas Congress vice-president Numan Mohammed, and Feroz Khan, who narrowly lost from Nampally to AIMIM.
From the non-minority side, Khairatabad DCC president and Revanth Reddy loyalist C Rohin Reddy is in the fray. A last-minute seat shift saw him lose from Amberpet in 2023, after ceding Khairatabad to Vijaya Reddy, daughter of former minister P Janardhan Reddy, who is also reportedly eyeing Jubilee Hills. Another contender is Navin Yadav, who has previously contested from this constituency under different banners.
A Congress leader confirmed that the high command will take time but finalise the candidate at least two months before the poll notification. With each party reading Jubilee Hills as a political signal to the rest of Hyderabad, this bypoll will shape up to be much more than just a routine contest, a political observer said.

No rifts in Karnataka Congress, Rajanna's comments overblown: CM Siddaramaiah
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday dismissed speculation about political instability in the state, brushing aside recent remarks made by Minister KN Rajanna as inconsequential. Speaking to reporters at Vidhana Soudha, the CM asserted that there is no internal discord within the Congress and advised the media and public to not read too much into Rajanna's comments. Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Also Read = 'Please forgive us, Gowdre': Redditors discuss current state of Bengaluru on Kempegowda Jayanti 'There is no infighting in the party,' Siddaramaiah said. 'Minister KN Rajanna merely stated that there may be some political developments. He did not say that anything is going to happen. It's best not to give such statements undue attention.' Rajanna's vague remarks earlier in the week had sparked chatter about possible changes within the state's political landscape, but Siddaramaiah's firm response was aimed at putting those rumours to rest. The CM's clarification came shortly after he participated in the 516th birth anniversary celebrations of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, the founder of Bengaluru. Accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, Siddaramaiah paid floral tributes to Kempegowda by garlanding his statue near the eastern entrance of the Vidhana Soudha. Speaking at the event, Siddaramaiah described Kempegowda as a visionary leader and an exceptional administrator whose foresight laid the foundation for what Bengaluru is today, a globally recognised tech and innovation hub. 'He was not only a founder, but also a far-sighted planner.' The birth anniversary celebrations were jointly organised by the Karnataka government, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), and the Kempegowda Development Authority. The Chief Minister also recalled that it was during his earlier tenure (2013–2018) that his government, in consultation with Nirmalanandanatha Swamiji, had officially identified Kempegowda's date of birth. Since then, the state has been commemorating Kempegowda Jayanti as an annual event. (With ANI inputs)

Delhi Chief Minister Flags Off New DEVI Electric Buses, Inaugurates Narela Depot
New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday flagged off 105 new orange-coloured DEVI (Delhi EV Inter-connector) electric buses and inaugurated the newly built Sector A9 depot in Narela, calling it a step towards cleaner and more efficient public transport for the capital. Ms Gupta said the depot was completed in just 90 days and claimed it reflects the BJP government's commitment to deliver on promises made to Delhi residents. She also attacked the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, accusing it of pushing Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) into losses and fostering a corrupt system. "Buses are Delhi's lifeline. But under the previous government, routes were cut, buses reduced, and corruption seeped in," she said. Referring to the CAG report, Gupta claimed that DTC had incurred losses amounting to Rs 65,000 crore during the earlier regime. She alleged that even the free bus ride scheme for women was marred by corruption and panic buttons were installed "just for show". Highlighting features of the new nine-metre-long electric buses, Gupta said they are equipped with air conditioning, panic buttons, and real-time monitoring systems. "When we removed paper tickets and moved to cards, AAP spread lies that women would no longer travel for free. But the move was only to curb corruption," she said. Meanwhile, Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Singh, who was present at the event, said the previous government denied people their right to better buses. "These buses should have arrived by last monsoon, but the former government failed to deliver. Today, the BJP is fulfilling that promise," he said. He said that earlier DEVI buses were green in colour, and this is the first time an entire fleet of orange-coloured buses has been introduced. This adds more vibrancy, and we will continue increasing their numbers, as we have been doing since the launch of the DEVI buses. Delhi BJP leader Yogender Chandolia dismissed AAP's claim that this was just a rebranding exercise. "If these were AAP's buses, they would have been on the roads months ago. These are new buses, purchased and brought in under the BJP. AAP never procured small electric buses - they reused old ones," he said. Chandolia said the new compact DEVI buses, with seating for 23 and standing space for 17 passengers, are ideal for navigating Delhi's narrow lanes and will benefit people. "This is the real Rekha Gupta Model - "clean, modern, and efficient public transport," he added. Currently, Delhi operates around 2,000 electric buses, and officials said the number will continue to rise, with a goal of achieving 100 per cent electrification of the bus fleet by 2027.

Karnataka Congress lodges complaint against BJP social media post equating ex-PM Indira Gandhi with Hitler
Karnataka Congress general secretary S Manohar on Wednesday, June 25, filed a police complaint against the BJP social media account that posted a satirical video portraying former prime minister Indira Gandhi as Adolf Hitler to mark the 50th year of the Emergency. The Karnataka BJP's June 25 post on X featured an AI-generated video that equated Gandhi to German dictator Adolf Hitler with a caption that said 'INDIRA is not equal to INDIA, while INDIRA is equal to HITLER'. INDIRA = INDIA❌INDIRA = HITLER ✅ — BJP Karnataka (@BJP4Karnataka) June 26, 2025 'Indira Gandhi's photo has been graphically altered in a hateful manner, and the former Prime Minister has been addressed in a derogatory manner, which could cause unrest in society and create enmity between religions and communities. Therefore, it is requested that appropriate legal action be taken against the said Twitter/X account,' stated the FIR filed on June 25. The High Grounds police in Bengaluru have filed a case of provocation and public mischief under Sections 192 and 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Reacting to the FIR, state BJP chief B Y Vijayendra has said that the former PM's actions during the period of Emergency were comparable to those of Hitler. 'There is no question of being afraid of Siddaramaiah's (Karnataka CM's) FIR and threats on social media tweets. Let a hundred such FIRs be registered. Our workers are ready to face it,' he said. The Emergency was imposed on June 25, 1975, by the then prime minister Indira Gandhi and lasted for 21 months. The period saw the suspension of civil liberties, curtailment of press freedom, mass arrests, the cancellation of elections, and rule by decree and was considered one of the darkest chapters in the history of the Indian republic.
