Broncos get great news on injury and holdout fronts as camp begins

USA Today3 days ago
Denver Broncos players were out on the practice field Wednesday for the first of two acclimation sessions ahead of the first official training camp practice on Friday, and there was good news across the board for Sean Payton's staff.
First, the injury news. Broncos wide receiver A.T. Perry (ankle) was the only player on the roster who was not able to practice. Perry is currently on the physically unable to perform list, but he will be eligible to be activated once cleared by the team's medical staff.
Everyone else on the team -- including wide receiver Devaughn Vele (leg), linebacker Dre Greenlaw (quad), long snapper Mitchell Fraboni (back), pass rusher Jonah Elliss (shoulder), linebacker Alex Singleton (ACL) and safety P.J. Locke (back) -- practiced in some capacity. Denver appears to be in very good health going into camp.
Meanwhile, there's also good news on the holdout front as there was no news in that department. Broncos receiver Courtland Sutton, pass rusher Nik Bonitto and defensive linemen Zach Allen and John Franklin-Myers all reported to training camp. They are among the team's players scheduled to become free agents in 2026, and each of them are seeking contract extensions.
Denver's front office has already started negotiations with Bonitto (according to the player) and with Sutton (according to KUSA-TV's Mike Klis). It's unknown if the team has opened discussions with Allen or JFM yet, but it feels like a good sign that none of the players are holding out.
So far, so good as the Broncos enter training camp.

Broncos roster: DL Matt Henningsen (No. 91) fighting for rotational role

Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at fourth-year defensive lineman Matt Henningsen, No. 91. Before the Broncos: Henningsen (6-3, 291 pounds) played college football at Wisconsin, earning third-team All-Big Ten honors as a senior in 2021. Following a redshirt freshman season, Henningsen spent five years with the Badgers, totaling 91 tackles (13 behind the line of scrimmage), eight sacks and three fumble recoveries (two returned for touchdowns). He played in 42 games with 29 starts during his time at Wisconsin. Broncos tenure: Henningsen's defensive presence impressed Denver Broncos coaches in the pre-draft process, which led to him being drafted in the sixth round (206th overall) of the 2022 NFL draft. In his rookie season, Henningsen played in 17 games, as primarily a rotational player, recording 1.0 sack and 21 combined tackles (eight solo, 13 assisted, two tackles for loss). In 2023, Henningsen once again played in all 17 regular season games, with two pass deflections and 19 total tackles (10 solo, nine assisted). In 2024, Henningsen was a practice squad player in Denver, not appearing in any games as an active player. Chances to make the 53-man roster: Practice squad or rotational backup player. Henningsen has been in the Broncos system for several years now, and will either be a rotational backup player in relief of John Franklin-Myers and Zach Allen. One of the players Henningsen will compete with for the backup role is Broncos third-round draft pick Sai'vion Jones. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.

Rival Big Ten coach shares first thoughts on Iowa football road trip

Kinnick Stadium is known as one of the toughest road environments in the entire Big Ten, with many top teams seeing postseason dreams die within the confines of almost 70,000 avid Hawkeye fans. From the distance between the fans and the visiting team's bench to the pink locker room to the new north end zone section, Kinnick has turned into a house of horrors for certain Big Ten teams. And one of the newer coaches in the conference acknowledged the difficulties that come with playing Iowa on the road. Dan Lanning has been the coach of the Oregon Ducks since 2022, going 35-6 over those three seasons. Last year, in Oregon's first season as a Big Ten team, he led the Ducks to a 13-0 regular season record and a Big Ten Championship game victory. While the season ended on a sour note with a loss to Ohio State in the College Football Playoff, Lanning has established the Ducks as a premier program. And in 2025, for the first time as a Big Ten school, they'll travel to Iowa City to play the Hawkeyes. Lanning spoke to the media on Thursday at Big Ten media days in Las Vegas and was asked a question about his team's road trip to Iowa in November and how he's preparing his team for that game. What did Dan Lanning say about playing Iowa on the road? When asked about going on the road to play Iowa in November, Lanning had this to say. "It was something I got to experience as a GA when I was at Pitt, we played at Iowa. It was an unbelievable atmosphere, that's the NFL team of the state. Coach (Kirk) Ferentz has done an unbelievable job... the home crowd is right on top of the visiting stands. It's a special place and a fun venue, so we're excited to see them," Lanning said. Lanning has a lot of respect and admiration for Kinnick Stadium and the program that Ferentz has built at Iowa. With prior experience coaching at Kinnick, albeit as a graduate assistant, Lanning has an idea of what to expect when a visiting team walks into Kinnick. But, he should expect Hawkeye fans to show up and be loud when one of the best teams on Iowa's schedule comes into town. Iowa and Oregon will clash at Kinnick on Nov. 8. It'll be the third College Football Playoff team from last season that the Hawkeyes will have played in a five-game stretch, joining Indiana on Sept. 27 and Penn State on Oct. 18. All three of those games are in Iowa City. Hawk fans have a great home schedule of games to go to in 2025. Broncos CB Pat Surtain reacts to viral Ja'Marr Chase video: 'That is pretty cool'

Last month, Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton joined a group of receivers from across the league in Miami for Chad Johnson's "Wideout Workshop." A viral video emerged from that camp showing Johnson discussing how to attempt to beat Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain in coverage. Johnson received pushback from Ja'Marr Chase and others debating how to play against PS2. After reporting for training camp earlier this week, Surtain was asked about the viral moment. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year confirmed that he had seen the video. 'I think there's a lot of respect that goes into it," Surtain said Tuesday. "I think the highest honor, highest respect you can get is from your peers. So hearing that is pretty cool to see -- telling "Ocho" it's not that easy. They know us best. It's major respect, so respect to them guys as well. You know in football, you go up against the best of the best each and every week, so to get respect from your peers like that means a lot.' The Cincinnati Bengals beat the Broncos 30-24 last season. Chase finished the game with nine receptions for 102 yards, but only three of those catches (for 27 yards) came with Surtain in coverage, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. Surtain and Chase will get a rematch on Monday Night Football when Denver hosts Cincinnati in Week 4. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X!
