Wife shocked after learning policeman husband was stabbed during patrol

Malay Mail3 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 — The wife of a police corporal stabbed while on patrol in Pudu last week described her shock upon receiving a call from the hospital requesting immediate consent for emergency surgery.
Norfazliana Osman, 35, said she was at their home in the Pudu police quarters when Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, contacted her around 1 pm on Thursday.
'They said they needed to operate immediately and asked for consent as part of his intestines might need to be removed due to the stab wound,' she told reporters at the hospital today.
Her husband, Corporal Mohd Nadzri Sudiman, remains in stable condition but is still weak and requires pain management, she said.
'I understand the risks of his job as a policeman, but as a wife, the fear is always there,' said Norfazliana, who has two children aged 11 and seven.
She said it is uncertain how long her husband will remain hospitalised, but confirmed their children have been informed of his condition.
Earlier, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay visited Mohd Nadzri at the hospital.
Also present were Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad, Bukit Aman Management (Administration) deputy director Datuk Azizee Ismail, Wangsa Maju district police chief ACP Mohd Lazim Ismail and Cheras district police chief ACP Aidil Bolhassan.
Mohd Nadzri was seriously injured after being stabbed in the abdomen by a 56-year-old local man while patrolling with four other officers in Pudu Market, Jalan Yew.
The suspect was arrested at the scene and has been remanded until next Thursday. The case is being investigated under Section 307 and Section 186 of the Penal Code for attempted murder and obstructing a public servant, as well as Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. — Bernama

Rare protest in China over schoolgirl beaten by teens

BEIJING, Aug 5 — A large protest erupted in the southwestern Chinese city of Jiangyou, videos on social media showed, after the beating of a young girl by three other teenagers sparked public outrage. Protests are rare in China, where any and all opposition to the ruling Communist Party and anything seen as a threat to the civil order is swiftly quashed. But bullying in the country's ultra-competitive education system has touched a public nerve, with a high-profile killing last year sparking national debate over how the law deals with juvenile offenders. Yesterdday, police said two teenage girls were being sent to a correctional school for assaulting and verbally abusing a 14-year-old girl surnamed Lai. The beating, which took place last month and left multiple bruises on Lai's scalp and knees, was filmed by bystanders who shared it online, police said. The onlookers and a third girl who participated in the abuse were "criticised and educated", police said, adding that their guardians had been "ordered to exercise strict discipline". The case drew outrage online from some lamenting the teenagers' punishment did not go further. And later yesterdaay, people gathered outside the city hall in Jiangyou, in Sichuan province, with large crowds stretching around the block, footage showed. Video confirmed by AFP to have been taken outside the city hall showed at least two people forcibly pulled aside by a group of blue-shirted and plainclothes police as well as a woman in a black dress dragged away by her limbs. "They're sweeping away citizens everywhere," a person can be heard saying as the woman is dragged away. More footage taken after dark showed police wearing black SWAT uniforms subduing at least three people at an intersection with hundreds of bystanders. Yesterday, the city of Jiangyou was the second top-trending topic on the X-like Weibo, before it and related hashtags were censored. "The sentence is too light... that is why they were so arrogant," one top-liked Weibo comment under the police statement read. Yesterday, local authorities said on WeChat that police had punished two people for fabricating information about the school bullying case, warning the public against spreading rumours. Last year Chinese authorities vowed to crack down on school bullying after a high-profile murder case. In December, a court sentenced a teenage boy to life in prison for murdering his classmate. The suspects, all aged under 14 at the time of the murder, were accused of bullying a 13-year-old classmate over a long period before killing him in an abandoned greenhouse. Another boy was given 12 years in prison, while a third whom the court found did not harm the victim was sentenced to correctional education. — AFP

Zayn Rayyan's mother closes defence after expert says messages showed no malice, verdict of neglect trial due Oct 31

PETALING JAYA, Aug 5 — The defence team for the mother of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matin, charged with neglect resulting in physical harm to her six-year-old autistic son, closed its case today after calling five witnesses. Defence counsel Haresh Mahadevan, representing Ismanira Abdul Manaf, 30, informed the court that the defence was closing its case following the testimony of child psychologist Dr Noor Aishah Rosli, 49, who took the stand today. 'The defence has no further witnesses, and we close our case today,' he said. Judge Dr Syahliza Warnoh then fixed Sept 8 for written submissions from both parties, Sept 22 for oral replies and Oct 31 for the verdict on whether to convict or acquit Ismanira. On July 21, the court ordered Ismanira to enter her defence after the prosecution established a prima facie case against her at the close of its case. She testified in her own defence over three days, beginning July 21. Earlier, Dr Noor Aishah testified that the following WhatsApp messages were normal expressions from a mother caring for an autistic child: 'haishhh stress nak mati' ( I'm so stressed I could die) 'budak ni elok je takde pun aku pukul… sebenarnya aku tepuk punggung masing-masing je tapi aku cakap perkataan berlasah sebab aku tengah geram dan marah sangat-sangat' (The kid's fine, I didn't actually hit him… I just smacked his bottom, but I said 'beat up' because I was feeling really annoyed and angry). 'From a psychological perspective, these should not be viewed as an intention to commit a crime. If you ask anyone, it's common for messages to a spouse to contain harsh words, but without any intent behind them,' she said. She described the messages as Ismanira's way of expressing affection for her son while venting to her husband, who was at work at the time. Dr Noor Aishah said the texts were emotional outbursts, light-hearted remarks, and not to be taken seriously, with no indication of malicious intent. 'I find these kinds of conversations reflect a marital relationship. The language may appear harsh, but it's just surface-level, idle talk meant only to release emotions,' she added during examination-in-chief by Haresh. Today's proceedings were conducted by deputy public prosecutors Raja Zaizul Faridah Raja Zaharudin, Aqharie Durranie Aziz and Nur Sabrina Zubairi, while Haresh, Ramzani Idris and Lavanesh Haresh appeared for Ismanira. On July 21, Judge Syahliza ordered Ismanira to enter her defence after ruling that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against her. Her husband, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari, 30, was discharged and acquitted of the same charge. On June 13 last year, Zaim Ikhwan and Ismanira, both aged 30, pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court to a charge of neglecting their six-year-old autistic son in a manner likely to cause physical harm, along PJU Damansara Damai between noon on Dec 5 and 9.55 pm on Dec 6, 2023. They were charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which is punishable by a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both upon conviction. Zayn Rayyan was reported missing on Dec 5, 2023, and his body was discovered in a stream near his home at Apartment Idaman, Damansara Damai, the following day. He was believed to have been murdered, and an autopsy revealed injuries to his neck and body, consistent with self-defense. — Bernama

Hong Kong police investigate mangled body found on street, search for missing body parts

HONG KONG, Aug 5 — Hong Kong police launched an investigation today after what appeared to be a headless body was found on the street during a heavy rainstorm. A 54-year-old foreign male living on Kennedy Road, an affluent part of the Wan Chai neighbourhood, was found dead under a tree outside his home just after 7am today, according to police. The case was reported by a cleaner at the same address. 'Following preliminary investigation, it is believed that the subject fell from a flat at the address,' police said, adding a note written by the deceased had been recovered. The cause of death remains to be determined by autopsy. Uniformed officers were spotted combing the street during a torrential downpour to search for the man's head and left leg, local media earlier reported. The leg was later found across the road in front of a high school, while the man's head was suspected to be pushed into his body, newspaper Sing Tao Daily reported, citing sources at the scene. — AFP
