Scotland captain makes long-awaited injury comeback
The Scotland captain, who had not played a single minute this season after undergoing knee surgery in October, was introduced in the 88th minute to a rapturous reception from the home support at Villa Park.
Corsie replaced forward Rachel Daly, who was among the scorers in an eye-catching result that lifted Villa up to ninth in the Barclays Women's Super League table.
(Image: WSL) It capped an emotional evening for the 35-year-old centre-back, who has endured a frustrating six-month spell on the sidelines.
Corsie was an unused substitute in the opening game of the 2024-25 campaign before being ruled out for an initial eight weeks following surgery.
A calf setback in January further delayed her comeback and forced her to miss Scotland's Euro 2025 play-off heartbreak against Finland and the past four UEFA Women's Nations League fixtures.
Her return comes at a pivotal moment for the national side, with newly appointed head coach Melissa Andreatta set to name her first Scotland squad next month for crunch fixtures against Austria and the Netherlands.
Corsie will now hope to play her way back into the international fold as she builds up fitness in the final stages of the domestic season.
Villa manager Natalia Arroyo confirmed before kick-off that Corsie would be in the matchday squad, and her late cameo served as a symbolic moment for both club and country.
The dominant win over second-placed Arsenal underlined Villa's recent improvement, with goals from fellow Scotland star Kirsty Hanson, Jordan Nobbs, Daly and a double from Chasity Grant sealing an impressive victory.
But it was the return of Corsie - Scotland's most experienced defender and a natural leader - that may prove just as significant in the weeks ahead.

Aston Villa icon looks unrecognisable as Jack Grealish posts Instagram message
Jack Grealish admitted he was left starstruck after bumping into Aston Villa legend Olof Mellberg, who is now unrecognisable from his playing days Jack Grealish says he was left starstruck after bumping into a barely recognisable Olof Mellberg. Despite now playing under the legendary Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and sharing a dressing room with football greats like Kevin De Bruyne, it seems an encounter with ex-Aston Villa defender Mellberg made a significant impression on him. The lifelong Villa supporter seized the moment to capture the meeting on Instagram. With his arm around Mellberg for the photo, Grealish pointed enthusiastically at the Swede, a broad grin spread across his face. Next to the image of the pair, the City midfielder wrote: "Not many people that I get starstruck over, but this guy is one! Big Olof Mellberg. One of my boyhood heroes." Now sporting a different look from his Villa Park days, the 47-year-old, with tousled hair and a bushy, greying beard, appeared equally pleased to see Grealish. Mellberg signed for Villa from Racing Santander in 2001 for a fee around £5million. It proved to be money well spent as the hard-tackling icon spent seven seasons with the club. He clocked up 263 appearances, scored eight goals and even captained Villa for several seasons. He also helped the club win the Intertoto Cup in 2001. In 2008, Mellberg moved to Juventus, where he stayed for a year before switching to Greek side Olympiacos for three seasons. Short stints at Villareal and Copenhagen followed, before he retired in 2014. Having turned to management, he took the reins of Swedish outfits IF Brommapojkarna and Helsingborg, as well as Norway's Fremad Amager. His latest venture led him stateside with St. Louis City SC, but his tenure was cut short as he was shown the door after a solitary season in MLS. Grealish, who made an eye-watering £100m switch from Villa to Manchester City in 2021, is now on the periphery at the Etihad following four years with the club. After spending much of this season warming the bench, speculation is rife about where he will land next. The 29-year-old has been linked with Everton, Tottenham, Newcastle and West Ham. A return to Villa Park continues to be whispered about, though it appears off the cards for the moment. Speaking towards the end of the season, Guardiola also hinted that Grealish's future could lie away from Eastlands. "Of course, Jack has to play," Guardiola said. "He's an unbelievable player that has to play football every three days. It didn't happen this season and last season either. He needs to do it, and that's with us, or another place. And that's a question for Jack, his agent, and the club." Grealish will set to miss out on the Club World Cup this summer, with his main priority being to find a new club ahead of the 2025/26 season and the World Cup next summer, if he still has realistic ambitions of playing for England at the tournament.

England squad has ‘so much talent' despite high-profile absentees
Within the last two weeks Mary Earps and Fran Kirby have retired from international football, while Millie Bright has stepped away saying she is 'unable to give 100 percent mentally or physically'. It has left a significant hole in Sarina Wiegman's squad – the trio have 220 caps between them – a month before the Euros, but Toone insists there are plenty of reasons to remain optimistic about their title defence. Millie Bright and goalkeeper Mary Earps will not be involved at Euro 2025 (Zac Goodwin/PA) 'There is a lot of experience with those three players, ones I am grateful I got to share a pitch with,' Toone told the PA news agency at the official launch of her E7 Academy at former school Fred Longworth High in Tyldesley. 'It is football and people make decisions and as players we have to respect that. I just want Mary to be happy – if that's her decision I'll respect that. 'It is nice to let someone else step into the squad and I know we have their backing 100 percent and I know they want us to do well. 'You have to focus on the squad we have now and there is so much talent and excitement in it, players who have been to major tournaments before and are experienced and know how to win. 'We have bags of talent coming through. You have to look forward to what's ahead and with the squad we have got. I think it is going to be exciting. 'They will go there, have no fear and hopefully they can shine on the big stage. 'We've got a very different squad to the one we had when we won it, but one which is very exiting and full of talent. 'There is no pressure, we're going to give it our all, inspire the next generation and make the nation proud as every time we step on to the pitch we want to win.' Toone's academy offers opportunities for eight to 16-year-olds of all abilities and a full-time education and player development programme for those between 16 and 19. It has partnered with 27 schools across Greater Manchester and she has encouraged more to sign up. 'It was always about using my platform as best I can to inspire young girls to give them an opportunity to play football and enjoy themselves,' the Manchester United star added. 'Hopefully girls here can really push on and come through the academy and play in the WSL one day. Toone hopes to be able to inspire more youngsters and provide greater opportunities through her academy (Jonathan Brady/PA) 'It's amazing we were part of that change in history in women's football and inspired the next generation of girls. 'When I was growing up there weren't as many opportunities as there are now and definitely not as many role modes as there are now. 'It is nice to be able to give back to the community and give back to these young girls starting out in their journeys.' :: For further details about Ella Toone's academy go to

Friday briefing: Lamine Yamal stars for Spain and ‘no crisis' for Sarina Wiegman
England boss Sarina Wiegman named her squad for Euro 2025 – insisting there was no 'crisis' in the Lionesses' camp. Russell Martin was announced as the new Rangers manager and Wales geared up for their next World Cup qualifier in Cardiff on Friday night, when Scotland and the Republic of Ireland will both play friendlies. Lamine Yamal stars as Spain edge Les Blues An all-time classic in the Nations League semi-finals 🤯#NationsLeague — UEFA EURO (@UEFAEURO) June 5, 2025 Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal scored twice as holders Spain beat France 5-4 in an entertaining heavyweight clash in Stuttgart to book their place in the Nations League final against Portugal. Goals from Nico Williams and Mikel Merino in the space of three minutes midway through the first half had put the European champions in control. Yamal, 17, slotted in a penalty soon after the restart, with Pedri then swiftly clipping home a fourth before Kylian Mbappe pulled a goal back for France from the spot in the 59th minute. After Lamal showed more fine close control to slide in a second goal, Lyon winger Rayan Cherki marked his debut off the bench when he crashed in a volley with 10 minutes left. A late own goal from Dani Vivian saw France claw back another before Randal Kolo Muani headed in during stoppage time. Spain, though, held out to make a third straight Nations League final, which will be played in Munich on Sunday. Sarina Wiegman shuts out the noise England boss Sarina Wiegman insisted there was no 'crisis' as she named a 23-strong squad for Euro 2025 following a tumultuous month for the Lionesses. It has been a far from settled few weeks as England prepared to defend their European crown, opening the campaign against France in Zurich on July 5. Both goalkeeper Mary Earps and attacker Fran Kirby had announced their retirement from international football, while defender Millie Bright pulled out of the tournament to prioritize her mental health, with Chelsea later confirming she had undergone minor knee surgery. Sarina Wiegman feels 'happy and excited' as focus sharpens ahead of Euro 2025 (Martin Rickett/PA) Wiegman, though, dismissed the idea the Lionesses camp is unsettled. Chelsea striker Lauren James, recovering from a hamstring injury, has been included in the squad, alongside 19-year-old Michelle Agyemang. 'We're going with this 23 to the Euros and I'm comfortable, happy and excited. For me it doesn't feel like a crisis at all,' Wiegman said. 'There is always noise, so we expect noise before we go into a tournament. The difference is in my first tournament, the attention and visibility with the women's team has increased. 'We have to deal with it and move on and focus on football.' Craig Bellamy wants Wales in focus Wales head coach Craig Bellamy wants his team in the right mindset against the rank outsiders (Adam Davy/PA) Wales boss Craig Bellamy says one of the world's worst football teams Liechtenstein have given him sleepless nights ahead of their World Cup qualifier. Liechtenstein – ranked 205th out of FIFA's 210 nations – have not won a competitive game since September 2020, and lost their opening two World Cup qualifiers in March. Bellamy, though, warned against any sense of complacency from his side in Cardiff on Friday night. 'We've prepared for Liechtenstein as we did for Turkey and everyone else – it doesn't matter who we play against,' the Wales boss said. 'I was up late last night. I didn't sleep well. Does that tell you something? I treat every team the same.' Russell Martin ready for Ibrox challenge Russell Martin is ready to meet the challenges head on at Ibrox (Steve Welsh/PA) New Rangers head coach Russell Martin has told sceptics he is looking to prove them wrong. News of the former MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton manager's three-year deal at Ibrox has not gone down well with some supporters. However, former Scotland defender Martin, who had an unsuccessful loan period at Rangers in 2018, is ready to meet the challenges head on. 'My whole career has been based on proving people wrong, really. At every level I got questioned,' former Norwich captain Martin, 39, said. 'I got to the Premier League as a player, I wasn't convinced I could do it, but I managed to establish myself there for a little while, played international football, which I'm incredibly proud of. 'So it's the same again as a manager – I had to prove people wrong at every opportunity.' What's on today? England manager Thomas Tuchel will speak to the media ahead of Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Andorra (Bradley Collyer/PA) England boss Thomas Tuchel will hold a press conference on Friday afternoon ahead of the World Cup qualifier against Andorra in Barcelona. Wales later take on Liechtenstein in their Group J fixture in Cardiff, while Scotland play a friendly against Iceland as do the Republic of Ireland when they host Senegal. Ahead of all that on Friday morning, England under-21s coach Lee Carsley will name his squad for the upcoming European Championships in Slovakia.
