Puja Muhurat 2025
Krishna Janmashtami in 2025 will be observed on Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16. The Nishita Kaal Puja — regarded as the most auspicious time for worship — is scheduled between 12:04 AM and 12:47 AM on August 16, according to Drik Panchang. This sacred window aligns with the believed midnight birth of Lord Krishna.
Timings may vary slightly across cities due to local lunar calculations, so devotees should consult their regional panchang for accuracy. The Parana (fast-breaking) is recommended on August 17 after sunrise, once both Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra have ended.

Dos and Don'ts for Janmashtami Fasting
Maintain cleanliness: Begin the day with a bath, clean your home, and ensure the puja area is spotless. Give the idols of Lord Krishna and Laddoo Gopal ji a ceremonial bath.
Take a sankalp (pledge): While fasting, make a conscious vow about your worship intentions. Spend the day chanting mantras and prayers.
Prepare homemade prasad: Offer sweets and dishes like peda, gheeya ki lauj, nariyal gajak, panjeeri, and other milk-based treats prepared at home.
Practice charity: Donate food, clothing, or money to those in need as an expression of goodwill and devotion.
Avoid non-vegetarian food: Refrain from consuming meat, fish, or eggs during this period, even if not fasting.
No alcohol or intoxicants: Abstain from alcohol, tobacco, or any addictive substances during the fast.
Types of Fasts
Nirjala fast: The strictest form, where devotees abstain from both food and water until midnight — the believed time of Krishna's birth. The fast is broken after prayers and aarti.
Phalahar fast: A milder version allowing fruits, milk, and water. Devotees avoid grains, legumes, onions, and garlic, adhering to a sattvic (pure) diet.
Rituals and Breaking the Fast
Janmashtami fasting is often accompanied by bhajans, prayers, and readings from the Bhagavad Gita or Krishna Leela. Many visit temples to witness grand celebrations of Krishna's birth. The fast is broken at midnight by first offering the prepared prasad to Lord Krishna and then partaking in it.

Special arrangements in Gujarats Dwarka for Janmashtami
Dwarka (Gujarat) [India], August 16 (ANI): Special security and logistical arrangements have been put in place in Gujarat's Dwarka for Janmashtami, with dedicated facilities for senior citizens, differently abled devotees, and mothers, along with provisions for clean drinking water and enhanced sanitation. Dwarka SDM Lt Col (Retd) Amol Awate said on Friday that special provisions have been made for senior citizens and differently abled people. 'Keeping Janmashtmi in mind, the district administration has taken many steps. From Kirti Stambh, a single-point entry has been made for all the devotees. Special provisions have been made so that e-rickshaws can drop senior citizens and differently abled persons directly to the door of the temple, from where, the staff will assist them in wheelchairs for darshan. For mothers, five baby feeding centres have been established inside the temple," Awate told ANI. He added that dedicated teams have been assigned for cleaning bathrooms and temples. 'From Hathi Gate to Sudama Setu, we have assigned a dedicated team to ensure that all toilets and bathrooms are thoroughly cleaned and well-maintained. The water management has been done through almost 5 water tanks and the cold and clean water from these water tanks will be distributed to the devotees all over the road and since last 2 days…almost 10 JCBs and 15 tractors and trolleys are used in cleaning all the temples in our Dwarka taluka i.e. Dwarka, Bet Dwarka, Nageshwar, there is a dedicated programme for their cleaning, we have been doing this since last 2 days and will continue this for the next three days," he said. He further said, 'We expect that whoever works well in the service of Dwarkadish should do it well, and all the devotees who come from outside should have a good experience and should go from Dwarka with good memories."Meanwhile, in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura, in a remarkable display of patriotism, the Krishna Janambhoomi temple has unveiled a board to honour the bravery of the Indian Armed Forces for their success in 'Operation Sindoor" on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day. This operation was a significant cross-border strike that showcased the military's prowess and strategic capabilities. The display of the board at the Krishna Janambhoomi temple highlights the intersection of patriotism and faith in Indian culture. It reflects the deep respect and admiration for the armed forces and their role in safeguarding the country. This gesture is a powerful way to acknowledge the military's contributions and reinforce national pride. On the eve of Janmashtmi, the devotees at the Krishna Janmsthan carried 'Poshak'– the decorative attire for Lord Krishna — over their heads in a heartfelt act of devotion. (ANI)

Bagina offerings to River Krishna on hold despite Almatti reservoir being full
Pic: A recent pic of the CM and the deputy CM offering bagina at KRS dam Vijayapura: The Krishna basin has seen heavy rainfall in Maharashtra and Karnataka since May. Coordinated action by govt departments has prevented floods and crop loss. The Lal Bahadur Shastri reservoir at Almatti has been nearly full for a month now, but locals feel the govt has neglected the ritual of offering 'bagina' to the river, amid political distractions. They hope the CM will do it after the assembly session. GC Muttaladinni, convenor of the Krishna Teera Mulugade Santrastara Kshemabhivruddhi Samsthe, Vijayapura, told TOI that it has been an annual tradition to offer bagina to the River Krishna, which has been the lifeline of the North Karnataka region. "This year, the region is receiving good rainfall and water from Maharashtra from May itself, and Almatti dam has been almost full for a month. Hence, the programme should be conducted now, considering the situation," he pressed. Sources in Krishna Bhagya Jal Nigam Limited (KBJNL) Almatti dam division stated that inflow started from May 19 this year. "We ensured smooth handling, averting flood and crop loss in coordination with district administrations and line departments. Now we are releasing water to the river to maintain the dam. If this outflow is withheld, the dam will be full within a few hours," they stated. Aravind Kulkarni, state secretary of Akhanda Karnataka Raita Sangha, Vijayapura, noted that stepmotherly treatment prevails towards the River Krishna for decades. "The govt offered bagina to Krishnarajasagar (KRS) in June itself. But it is inactive about River Krishna. Elected representatives of the region are also silent. Almatti dam is Asia's second-largest, four times bigger than KRS. The govt is enthusiastic to hold Cauvery Arathi, but it is blind towards the demand for Krishna Arathi," he lamented. Mohan Raj KP, managing director of KBJNL, Bengaluru, confirmed that the dam is 100% full. "We normally hold the bagina offering programme in Aug and sometimes in Sept. Since it's still raining in the river basin, we have deferred it. Once the weather clears, we will seek a date from the govt and organise it," he assured. Bird injuries from kite strings could go up during long weekend, say vets
New Delhi: On Saturday afternoon, a pigeon was flying gracefully in Chandni Chowk when suddenly, a razor-sharp kite string appeared out of nowhere. As the thread caught its wing and sliced deep into the flesh, the bird, badly injured, fell to the ground. The story repeats itself every year around Independence Day, with many birds sustaining fatal injuries too after getting entangled in kite strings, especially Chinese manjha. So far this year, while there have been fewer cases due to rain, veterinarians believe the number could go up by Monday as many people will fly kites during the long weekend. Jain Bird Hospital in Chandni Chowk said it had received more than 25 cases of birds sustaining injuries after coming in contact with kite strings. As there was intermittent rain on Friday noon, fewer people flew kites this time. However, by evening, after the rain stopped, many people started bringing injured birds to our hospital. We expect the cases to go up during the next 48 hours," said Dr Haravtar Singh from Jain Bird Hospital. The injured birds included pigeons, kites and crows, he added. The hospital said in many of the cases, when birds struggle to free themselves from the kite string, they become even more entangled, leading to further injury. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The sharp strings can sever veins, causing significant blood loss. In many cases, the birds collapse from shock, said Singh. On Friday, Wildlife Rescue, a bird rehabilitation centre catering mostly to raptors in Wazirabad, rescued 18 birds, including egrets and kites, that had sustained injuries. Of these, 13 had deep cut wounds. In comparison, the centre had rescued 15 birds last year. Mohd Saud, co-founder of Wildlife Rescue, said they expect the cases of bird injuries to rise further during the weekend, when more people would be flying kites. Singh advised people that if they find an injured bird, they should handle them carefully. "Sometimes people hold an injured bird too tightly, especially around the abdomen, which can lead to hypoxia, or a lack of oxygen. Instead, birds should be handled gently and transported in a shoebox or cardboard carton with small air holes. It's important to avoid using plastic bags, as birds cannot breathe properly inside them," said Singh. In 2017, the Delhi environment department imposed a complete ban on the sale, production, storage, supply, import and use of kite-flying thread made of nylon, plastic or any other synthetic material, including Chinese manjha, and any string that is made sharp by being laced with glass, metal or other materials. However, despite the ban, Chinese manjha continues to be available in the market. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
