Eindhoven (Netherlands), Jul 21 (PTI) The India A men's hockey team ended its campaign in the Europe tour with a 2-8 loss against the Netherlands here.
Young Indian midfielder Rajinder Singh and forward Selvam Karthi scored the two goals for India A in the final match on Sunday. India A had lost their previous game against the Netherlands 0-3 last week.
India A began the tour on July 8 and played a total of eight matches against five European teams.
The team travelled across three cities to compete against some of the top teams in the sport, including world number 1 Netherlands and world number 3 Belgium.
Talking about the overall experience, India A coach Shivendra Singh said, 'While we might have had more losses than wins during this European Tour, it was never about the results and more about learning and experience we gained from this tour as a team." He added, 'We had a mix of senior and junior players as part India A, and they gained very valuable experience during the past two weeks.
'As we head back to India, I am confident that all these players will use this valuable experience and incorporate it to better their game for all their future matches." India A played against, Ireland, France, England, Belgium and the Netherlands during this exposure tour and won three of their eight matches. PTI AH APA APA

McGrath uneasy with Jasprit Bumrah's career trajectory with Team India: ‘To limit himself to Test cricket…'

Jasprit Bumrah has been the axis of India's bowling might for years, but his availability has become a quietly growing concern. Despite starting the current five-match Test series in England with a statement spell at Headingley that featured a five-wicket haul, Bumrah sat out the second Test at Edgbaston, returned for the third and fourth Tests, and was unavailable for the decider at The Oval. India's Jasprit Bumrah looks on (Action Images via Reuters) Even though the Indian bowlers had an entire fifth day off during the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Bumrah wasn't available for selection and was released from the squad ahead of Day 2 in the final match. The team management maintained that this was a call taken in respect of Bumrah's fitness and past injury record, including a setback suffered in Sydney earlier this year. This cautious handling follows a pattern in Bumrah's recent career. He missed the Champions Trophy, eased into full-throttle action through the IPL, and was inducted into the Test squad with a capped workload. India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate insisted the decision was made in "good faith", based on Bumrah's bowling loads across the series. But as the discussions around workload management grow louder, so do the questions on how long India can afford to hold back their best weapon, especially in a series this intense. McGrath on Bumrah Legendary Australian pacer Glenn McGrath, speaking to The Indian Express, weighed in on Bumrah's future and the challenge of balancing formats. 'You want your best bowler bowling. And he'll want to bowl all the time. If he's just bowling in short spells, then the batting team know they just can get through the three or four overs and then they're away,' McGrath said. 'So it depends a lot on the other bowlers. You need another group of fast bowlers coming through to balance it out so that he doesn't have to bowl long spells. You've got other bowlers bowling equally as well to carry the workload. You look at Bumrah, he's so effective in ODI and T20 cricket. To limit himself to Test cricket would be a shame. But, he's got to work out what's best for him.' Bumrah has sparsely participated in limited-overs bilateral series. The last time Bumrah was a part of India's white-ball bilateral series was September 2023, when Australia toured India ahead of the ODI World Cup. With no red-ball assignments scheduled immediately after the England series, Bumrah is expected to return to the T20 fold during the Asia Cup in September, if fully fit.

KL Rahul's 532-Run Blitz Falls Just Short Of Sunil Gavaskar's Historic England Benchmark

KL Rahul had a phenomenal outing in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 in England, scoring 2 centuries and 2 half-centuries across the series. His stellar performances helped him become only the second Indian opener to score 500+ runs in a Test series in England, a rare feat that places him among the country's best. However, Rahul missed the opportunity to surpass a legendary milestone. Coming into the final Test at The Oval, the right-hander needed just 17 runs to break Sunil Gavaskar's record of 542 runs, set during the 1979 England tour. Unfortunately, he managed only 7 runs in his last innings, ending the series with 532 runs in 10 innings at an average of 53.32, falling agonizingly short of Gavaskar's mark by 10 runs. This near miss does not overshadow Rahul's consistency and impact throughout the series. His fluent stroke play and ability to handle the swinging Duke's ball earned him accolades, and he now joins an elite list of Indian openers who have thrived in English conditions. Most runs by an Indian opener in a Test series in England: 542: Sunil Gavaskar (1979) 532: KL Rahul (2025) 402: Murali Vijay (2014) 368: Rohit Sharma (2021-22) Rahul's heroics in the 2025 series will be remembered as one of the finest displays by an Indian opener in challenging English conditions, even though the cherished record slipped from his grasp by a slender margin. Who has the upper hand? Yashasvi Jaiswal's unbeaten 51 took India to 75/2 at stumps on the second day of the fifth Test against England at the Oval. India lead England by 52 runs at stumps on Day 2 with Jaiswal and night watchman Akash Deep (4 not out) at the crease. After taking a lead of 23 runs, England pacer Josh Tongue removed KL Rahul (7) while Gus Atkinson accounted for Sai Sudharsan (11). Earlier, England were bowled out for 247 in their first innings with Mohammed Siraj (4/86) and Prasidh Krishna (4/62) taking four wickets each.

‘The captaincy of Shubman Gill was outstanding': Michael Vaughan on India's comeback vs England on Day 2 of Oval Test

With England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett taking England to a score of 92 without loss at one stage in reply to India's first-innings total of 224 in the fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval, the Ollie Pope-led England team looked set to post a huge first-innings total. However, with the Shubman Gill-led Indian team restricting England to a first-innings total of 247, India remained in the hunt, finishing the second day with a second-innings score of 75 for 2 and a lead of 52 runs. Former England captain Michael Vaughan praised Indian captain Shubman Gill for his gameplay post-lunch on the second day, where Indian bowlers, led by Mohammad Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, ensured that England could not cross 250. 'The captaincy of Shubman Gill was outstanding in the afternoon because he brought the field in and he said to the England players, 'If you're going to play good shots, you're going to be rewarded, but if you don't, then there's a chance we'll take one or two wickets.' There were a couple of really good deliveries from Siraj to get rid of Ollie Pope, who was playing nicely, and Joe Root, who was playing the Joe Root way. Those were two big moments in the afternoon session,' Vaughan said while commenting on BBC Sport. Earlier on the second day of the Oval Test, England all-rounder Chris Woakes was sidelined from the Test with a shoulder injury. Woakes had suffered the injury during the 57th over of India's first innings on Thursday as he stretched to make a dive near the boundary to save a run, resulting in the injury to his shoulder. With England a bowler short in the match and with London weather expected to be sunny on Saturday, Vaughan shared how he sees India taking advantage of England being one bowler short. 'I'd rather be India, with the fact that England don't have Chris Woakes and tomorrow the sun's going to shine. You would think this pitch would quieten down, but if it stays like this, it's going to be a great game. It's had movement throughout, and the standout partnership of Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley looked like it exploded England ahead—and then India remembered to bowl at the stumps, they bowled a bit fuller,' Vaughan added. Vaughan's fellow commentator and former Indian wicket-keeper Deep Dasgupta also termed India as being 'a little ahead' in the game. 'India are a little ahead in this game; it's been a low-scoring game. India are ahead, for sure, but I think at the end of the day, it's going to be about pressure. So far in this series, this India side have handled pressure well, and it's been a long tour, one more innings to go. You have to keep everything else away and just bat normally. The pitch will get better; it's just about how you handle it. At Lord's, it wasn't handled well; at Old Trafford, it was handled very well by India,' Dasgupta said on BBC.
