Human names top the trend for cats and dogs in 2025
People are now naming their pets Kevin, Gary and Barbara
The research showed a healthy sense of humour amongst pet owners in the UK
People names are dominating the trend for cats and dogs in 2025 with pets now often named Dennis, Kevin, Gary, Dorothy or Barbara. Pet Health Club has listed the top 10 dog and cat names, as pet ownership gets set to soar over the summer months.
The team at Pet Health Club analysed data from across their nationwide network of over 800 vet practices, finding that pet parents are opting for the name Bella most frequently for dogs, whilst Luna is the number one name for cats. Vets found a definite trend for celebrity-inspired names, from Doja and Elvis to Drake, Shakira and Kendall, as well as the full monikers of Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles and Miley Cyrus.

Traditionally 'human' names also remain a firm favourite, with some surprising options. Names like Dennis, Kevin, Gary, Dorothy and Barbara all featured among the top 10 for dogs and cats. Characters from movies, books, video games and TV shows were also well represented with the top 20 including Loki, Thor, Leia, Bilbo, Frodo, Zelda, Batman, Hermione, Chewbacca, Hulk and even Pikachu.

The research also showed a healthy sense of humour amongst pet owners in the UK, with witty names like Albus Dumbledog, Artemus Growl, Sherlock Bones and Bartholomeow appearing on the list. Holly Mckinley, Senior Vet at Pet Health Club, said: 'We often see a surge in new puppies and kittens being welcomed into families over the summer months, with people having more time to spend at home with a new pet and the weather being better.
'As vets who work with millions of much-loved pets all year round, we've heard our fair share of unusual names, but it was still interesting to see a few weird and wonderful ones crop up in our analysis. Even our eyebrows raise when we welcome a Bulldozer or Mozzarella into the examination room.
'What's lovely to see is that pet names are really important to owners – it becomes an extension of their personality and can be part of the bonding process with their puppy or kitten. After all, learning their name is a very important stage of a pet's early training and socialisation, and makes them feel like they belong in your 'pack'.

Fresh heartbreak for Debbie confirmed in Coronation Street as she makes a plea

2025 has not been the year Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) expected in Coronation Street. When she went to the doctor earlier this year after experiencing some troubling symptoms – forgetfulness, mood swings, blackouts – she expected to be told it was menopause-related. What she was told instead was devastating. Debbie has young-onset dementia, and her symptoms will gradually get worse. At first she tried to carry on as normal without telling anyone. Only her brother Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) knew about her diagnosis, and he found out by chance and agreed to keep her secret. But as Debbie found herself experiencing more worrying episodes she eventually came clean to her family. Generally she's been met with a lot of support and understanding, and she's reconciled with former partner Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan) who she pushed away because she couldn't cope with the idea of him seeing her deteriorate. Aside from Ronnie, Debbie's main supporters have been her family and she's been especially happy to have Carl back in her life. Carl was largely brought up in Germany and didn't have much contact with Kevin (Michael Le Vell) over the years, although he and Debbie were a lot closer. She's been glad to have Carl around, as he's also been there to support Kevin who was undergoing cancer treatment. So when Debbie faces losing Carl from her life in upcoming episodes, she's not happy at all. Carl gets himself into hot water with Kevin when his brother (and boss) discovers that he's been running a stolen car scam from the garage. In return, Carl discovers that Kevin has been lying about his cancer treatment not working, when in fact he's been declared to be free of cancer following chemotherapy. It's a messy situation, and messier still when Abi (Sally Carman) hears about Kevin's lies from Tyrone (Alan Halsall). Kev pleads that he only made out he needed more cancer treatment because he was so scared that Abi was about to leave him for Carl and he wanted a way to make her stay. This has the effect of infuriating Abi so much that she feels disgusted with Kevin, knowing how he tried to manipulate her emotions and was prepared to let his kids think he still had cancer. So she goes and finds Carl and they kiss passionately, finally giving in to their long-held feelings for each other. More Trending Kevin can't cope with having Carl around and sacks him from the garage, saying he can't trust him. With no job and with the complications of his feelings for Abi, Carl decides it might be best if he moves on. Debbie, however, isn't prepared to let her brother leave Weatherfield without trying to persuade him to stay. She doesn't know what her future is going to look like, but she wants her family around her as much as possible. View More » For Debbie's sake, will Carl agree to stay? Fundraiser for Scots teen who fell to his death at Ibiza Rocks hits £30,000

Gary Kelly, 19, died instantly in the fall at the four-star hotel on the party island during the early hours of Monday, July 21 A fundraiser to support the family of a teenager who died after plunging from the third floor at Ibiza Rocks Hotel has now reached over £30,000. ‌ Gary Kelly, 19, from Dundee, died instantly in the fall at the four-star hotel on the party island during the early hours of Monday, July 21. Two ambulances were sent to the scene but paramedics said there was nothing they could do to save him. ‌ Evan Thomson, from Aberdeen, died at the hotel under similar circumstances while on holiday celebrating his 26th birthday just two weeks ago. Gary's family have been left heartbroken by the events and a fundraiser was quickly set up in his name to support his loved ones. ‌ Over £30,000 has now been raised and it's understood the cash will soon be transferred over to the family to help with funeral payments and other costs. A statement on the GoFundMe reads: "We are all feeling the loss of young Gary Kelly. And I know you can't put a price on life. But hopefully we can help the family through this as a nicer young man and family you would struggle to find." ‌ Tributes flooded in from Gary as the news broke of his untimely death earlier this week. Writing online, his sister Kharis Kelly said: "Our hearts are shattered beyond words. Our handsome boy has gone to the other side, Absolutely no words. We are asking everyone to respect our privacy as a family while we try to navigate through this tragic news. You'll forever be our boy Gary, Sleep tight." His girlfriend Louise Essery published a tribute to Gary, who she described as inspirational across every area of his life. ‌ She said: "I never thought I would be sat here writing a goodbye. For those who knew Gary, oh you were so lucky. His passion and dedication was inspiring, whether in hockey, work, or with loved ones. I'm struggling to understand how you are no longer with me. "It hasn't really hit me yet. Gary taught and showed me valuable lessons that I'll carry with me forever. I think it's important to remember the good times and to celebrate the love he brought into our lives." Gary, who played ice hockey for both Dundee Stars and Aberdeen Lynx last season, was remembered as a 'hugely talented and charismatic individual'. ‌ Meanwhile Ibiza Rocks have resumed their schedule just days after Gary plunged to his death. Following the deaths of Gary and Evan, who both fell from balconies at the hotel, bosses announced they would be suspending all events. ‌ We told on Thursday, however, that the hotel were still selling party tickets despite saying they were pausing future events. And bosses then confirmed their investigations had concluded - with their schedule resuming on Saturday. Dizzee Rascal was scheduled to play at the hotel on Wednesday as part of the venue's '20th birthday celebrations' but that was postponed. However, Rudimental are still set to perform on July 30 for the anniversary. ‌ Following Evan's death his loved ones raised questions about the hotel safety, slamming how the party destination handled the situation. Friend Blair Robertson slammed the hotel, saying they tried hard to 'get things back to normal' following the death. ‌ He added: 'Security took us away to front desk. Paramedics didn't arrive for about 30 minutes. Forensic officers didn't speak English. We were just standing there, not knowing what was going on. Reception gave us false hope. "We heard the jet washes cleaning the ground where Evan died. That was the worst thing for us." The fundraiser to help support Gary's family is still open. To donate, click here.
