McMahon and Beck homers send MLB-worst Rockies to a 6-4 win over the Twins

Al Arabiya7 days ago
Ryan McMahon's two-run homer capped a four-run first inning, Jordan Beck homered and finished a double shy of hitting for the cycle, and the MLB-worst Colorado Rockies opened their second half of the season with a 6-4 win over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night.
The Rockies had four straight extra-base hits in the bottom of the first with doubles by Tyler Freeman and Mickey Moniak, a triple by Beck, and McMahon's 14th home run. Beck hit his 11th homer in the second inning and finished with two RBIs. Kyle Freeland (2-10) earned his second win in 18 starts this season. His last victory was on June 4 against Miami. Against Minnesota, he went six innings, giving up one run on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Seth Halvorsen earned his ninth save. Willi Castro's three-run homer off Jake Bird in the seventh inning cut the Twins deficit to 6-4. Byron Buxton had three hits, including his 22nd homer in the fifth. Ryan Jeffers matched a career high with four hits. Chris Paddack (3-9) went five innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out five. Colorado's Ezequiel Tovar returned from the injured list and started at shortstop. Infielder Thairo Estrada went on the 10-day IL with a sprained left thumb.
Key moment: The Rockies run of extra-base hits in the first, including McMahon's homer, provided the bulk of their offense. Key stat: The Rockies won for just the 11th time at Coors Field. They have lost 36 at home. Colorado needs to win 19 of its final 65 games in the second half to avoid matching the White Sox's modern-era record of 121 losses set last season.

Cubs' taillon, assad nearing returns to depleted staff as trade deadline approaches

The Chicago Cubs line up as one of the prospective buyers especially for pitching as baseball's July 31 trade deadline approaches. In the meantime Chicago – which entered Friday at 60-42 and a game behind first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central – is inching closer to having some injured pitchers return. On Friday before a game against the White Sox at Rate Field, Cubs manager Craig Counsell said starter Jameson Taillon, out since July 1 with a right calf strain, is expected to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa next week. The big right-hander threw a 47-pitch bullpen session Friday. Taillon is set to toss to live hitters in Milwaukee early next week and then report to the Cubs top affiliate. Taillon is 7-6 with a 4.44 ERA and was mainstay in the Chicago's rotation despite some ups and downs in his ninth major league season. The 33-year-old lost his final three straight games with a 10.66 ERA in that span after winning five in a row. Taillon's injury opened a second gap in a Chicago rotation that already was thinned when ace left-hander Justin Steele made only four starts before needing season-ending elbow surgery. Right-hander Javier Assad also is expected to join Iowa next week. Assad has not pitched this season due to a left oblique strain but was 7-6 with a 3.73 ERA in 29 starts last season. Righty Porter Hodge, out since July 8 with right shoulder impingement, is scheduled to pitch for Iowa on Saturday. Hodge is 2-1 with a 6.85 ERA in 26 relief appearances this season. Catcher Miguel Amaya, recovering from a left oblique strain, also is expected to join Iowa next week. He's batting .280 with four homers and 25 RBIs in 29 games this season but hasn't played since May 24.

Thorbjorn olesen takes the 2nd-round lead in the 3m open

Thorbjorn Olesen worked out of trouble more than once Friday at the TPC Twin Cities to take a one-stroke lead over Jake Knapp into the weekend in the 3M Open. Olesen followed an opening 9-under 62 on Thursday with a 66, hitting out of the rough to set up a 5-foot birdie putt on his final hole—the par-4 ninth. The 35-year-old Danish player also recovered from a double bogey on the par-4 15th with consecutive birdies as he searches for his first PGA Tour victory. 'I think both days my iron play has been really, really good,' Olesen said. 'I hit a lot of shots really close to the pin and gave myself a lot of good chances. Today there was like two or three bad drives that cost me, but I still felt pretty good over the ball.' He had a 14-under 128 total. Knapp shot 65. Pierceson Coody (65) was another stroke back with Sam Stevens (68). Stevens closed with a bogey on No. 9. Takumi Kanaya (64), Chris Kirk (67), and Matti Schmid (68) were 11 under. With two weeks left in the regular season, Knapp (55th in the FedEx Cup standings), Schmid (68th), and Kirk (77th) remained in contention for the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The top 70 advance to the first playoff event. Olesen is a European tour regular with nine international victories. He missed the cut last week in the British Open in Northern Ireland. 'I take every week as it comes,' Olesen said. 'Every week is an opportunity to try and bounce back and do something special.' Knapp remained bogey-free through 36 holes for the first time in his career, starting out with birdies on Nos. 10-12. He seeks his first PGA Tour win of the season after earning the first of his career in the 2024 Mexico Open. 'I feel like it's been… kind of mistake-free for the most part,' Knapp said. 'I haven't really had to scramble too much.' Knapp had the lowest score on the PGA Tour this year, a 59 at the Cognizant Classic in February. Adam Svensson nearly matched Knapp with a course-record 11-under 60 on Thursday but dropped 29 spots Friday with a 75. Missing the cut were Byeong Hun An, 67th in the FedEx Cup standings, and Haotong Li, who was in the final pairing with winner Scottie Scheffler in the British Open and tied for fourth.

Kyle Stowers homers, Otto Lopez hits tiebreaking double as Marlins beat Brewers 5-1

All-Star Kyle Stowers hit his 23rd homer and Otto Lopez capped off a three-hit day with a tiebreaking double in the seventh inning to lead the Miami Marlins to a 5-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday. Lopez's double against Rick Mears cleared the bases although he only got credit for two RBIs because the third run scored on a fielding error by center fielder Blake Perkins. Aaron Ashby (1-1) who allowed the leadoff batter to reach on an infield single took the loss. Jackson Chourio hit his 17th homer for the Brewers extending his hitting streak to a career-best 18 games. He's batting .367 (26 for 71) with four homers and 16 RBIs over that stretch. Miami's Cal Quantrill struck out four while allowing three hits without a walk over five innings. Josh Simpson (1-0) worked a scoreless sixth. Brewers starter Freddy Peralta also went five innings and allowed one run. Stowers sent Peralta's 2-2 changeup over the wall in center in the third. Key moment: With one on and one out in the seventh and the game tied at 1, Brewers manager Pat Murphy replaced the left-hander Ashby with right-hander Mears who walked the next two batters and then gave up Lopez's double. Key stat: Christian Yelich's ninth-inning walk extended his on-base streak to 30 games tying a career high for the Brewers veteran. Up next: Brewers left-hander Jose Quintana (7-3, 3.49 ERA) faces Marlins right-hander Janson Junk (4-2, 3.09) on Saturday. Junk who made five appearances for the Brewers last season will be facing Milwaukee for the first time in his career.
