Diogo Jota dies: Late footballer loved turbo-charged cars; lived for the thrill of speed on and off the pitch
Jota's garage reflected his personality: sleek, stylish, and turbocharged. His most notable rides included a Porsche 911 Turbo S and a customised Range Rover Sport, both symbolic of his high-octane lifestyle. In May 2025, fans spotted him arriving at Anfield in a Tesla Model X, highlighting his interest in cutting-edge electric performance as well.
Over the years, Jota had also been associated with a handful of other top-tier cars, including a BMW i5 (owned briefly in 2022), a Ferrari 488 Italia, a Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG, a Lamborghini, and an Audi Q7. His diverse collection demonstrated a taste for both luxury and thrill, from roaring engines to futuristic EVs. He was even seen behind the wheel of a Cadillac, further underscoring his eclectic preferences. Beyond the road and the pitch, Jota was equally competitive in the virtual world.
A self-confessed gamer, he rose to global prominence in the gaming community in 2021 by becoming the world's number one FIFA 21 player, famously defeating teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold in the final of a professional e-sports tournament.
Whether dazzling defenders on matchday or enjoying the open road in a V8, Jota lived life at full speed. His story, both as a footballer and a motor enthusiast, is a reminder of a young man who chased passion in every form – always with power, precision, and heart.

Ex-Premier League referee David Coote banned for 8 weeks over Klopp rant
Former Premier League referee David Coote has been handed an eight-week suspension and directed to complete a face-to-face education programme after making offensive remarks about ex-Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp in a private video that was later widely shared on social media. The incident, which led to his dismissal, was reviewed by an independent regulatory commission that announced the disciplinary action on Tuesday. Coote accepted the Football Association's charge of misconduct for using abusive and insulting language in a video reportedly recorded around July 2020. The footage, believed to have been taken via a mobile phone, showed Coote sharing personal opinions about Liverpool FC and Klopp in a conversation with an unidentified individual. Coote faces consequences for his comments In the video, Coote referred to Liverpool with an expletive and used a derogatory term to describe Klopp, calling the German manager 'arrogant' and accusing him of previously alleging that Coote had lied during a post-match exchange. The FA deemed the remarks an "aggravated breach" of its rules, citing the inclusion of references, explicit or implied, to nationality. Coote was initially suspended, and after a formal investigation, he was terminated from his position in December by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), who stated his continued role was 'untenable.' In addition to this case, Coote had previously faced scrutiny following a report by The Sun, which claimed he discussed issuing a yellow card with a fan during a match. Coote denied the allegations, and the FA confirmed in June that no charges would be filed regarding that incident. Meanwhile, UEFA has also opened an inquiry into Coote after a separate video, again published by The Sun, allegedly showed him using cocaine during this year's European Championship.

Dewald Brevis rewrites record books with a knock for ages, pips Faf du Plessis; achieves feat even AB de Villiers missed
Dewald Brevis lit up the Marrara Oval in Darwin on Tuesday night as he tore down a host of records for South Africa during their 53-run victory over Australia. The 22-year-old scored 125* off just 56 deliveries, in an innings that helped propel the Proteas to 218/7 in the first innings before a clinical bowling performance ensured that the hosts were bowled out for 165 to claim an easy win. Dewald Brevis hit eight sixes enroute to his 125*(56) against Australia.(AFP) Brevis' innings saw him take down record after record. This included the highest-ever score in a T20I match by a South African player, surpassing Faf du Plessis' 119, and establishing himself at the top of his list. Highest scores by South African players in T20Is: Dewald Brevis – 125* vs AUS Faf du Plessis – 119 vs WI Richard Levi – 117* vs NZ Reeza Hendricks – 117 vs PAK Brevis also overtook Richard Levi as the youngest centurion for South Africa in T20I cricket, bringing it up at the age of 22 years and 105 days. Needing just 41 deliveries to reach his century, Brevis stands behind only David Miller in terms of fastest T20I centuries for the country. Miller had taken 35 deliveries during his innings against Bangladesh in 2017. Brevis became only the sixth player to register a T20I century against Australia, joining the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Brendon McCullum, and Martin Guptill. He also now holds the record for the highest individual T20I score against Australia, surpassing Gaikwad's score of 123* in 2023. Remarkably, this was also the highest score by any player in any men's T20I in Australia, with nobody having scored more than his 125*. The previous record was held by Shane Watson, who scored 124* at the SCG. This was also South Africa's highest total against Australia, and included the second-highest partnership for any wicket across all matches through Brevis and Stubbs putting on 126 runs with each other. With the ball, Kwena Maphaka kept his strong series going, picking up another three scalps to go with his 4-fer from the first T20I. Although he was expensive, he had an impact, but the same could not be said for Josh Hazlewood, who conceded his worst career T20I figures, of 1-56 in his four overs.
