Kota Kinabalu: The State Government has yet to consider implementing a rent-to-own scheme for People's Housing Project (PPR) units in Sabah, said challenges due to the overwhelming demand for rental housing. Deputy Chief Minister and Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam said the current policy remains rental-only, as converting these units to rent-to-own would reduce availability for others still on the waiting list. 'This PPR is a temporary measure. If we start offering rent-to-own, it could worsen the problem as many more people are still waiting to rent these units,' he said during the State Legislative Assembly sitting on Monday. He was responding to a supplementary question by Lamag Assemblyman Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, who had asked if the government would consider new approaches to help low-income residents eventually own homes, especially amid the rising cost of housing in Sabah. Bung Moktar pointed out that many residents remain stuck in long-term rentals due to the high property prices, and suggested the State work with federal agencies to offer a clearer pathway to home ownership. In reply, Joachim said PPR housing in Sabah is provided by the Federal Government specifically for rental purposes, and there is currently no directive to shift towards a rent-to-own model. 'Perhaps the honourable member for Lamag could bring up this matter again in Parliament,' he said. Earlier, Joachim addressed concerns raised by Tanjung Aru Assemblyman Datuk Junz Wong regarding the relocation of residents from the Tanjung Aru Flats, which were deemed unsafe. He said 237 of the 315 tenants had been offered PPR housing under the Low-Cost Housing Allocation Policy, while 58 did not qualify and 20 were found to already own property. Of those offered housing, 113 have accepted and been relocated to various PPR sites including Taman Jaya Diri, Taman Bukit Setia, Taman Puri Warisan, Taman Sri Anak, PPR Kibabaig, PPT Gayang 2, Taman Keramat, and Taman Serigai. However, 124 tenants declined the offer due to distance concerns related to work, schools and healthcare facilities. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Moscow warns of 'titanic efforts' to disrupt Putin-Trump meeting

MOSCOW: Certain countries will make 'titanic efforts' to disrupt the meeting U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin for August 15, Russia's investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev said on Saturday. Trump had said earlier that Russia and Ukraine were close to a ceasefire deal that could resolve the three-and-a-half-year conflict. The contents of the deal have yet to be announced, but it could require Ukraine to surrender significant territory - an outcome many European nations oppose. Dmitriev accused unnamed countries of seeking to prolong the war. 'Undoubtedly, a number of countries interested in continuing the conflict will make titanic efforts to disrupt the planned meeting between President Putin and President Trump,' he said in a post in his Telegram account, specifying that by efforts he meant 'provocations and disinformation'. Dmitriev did not specify which countries he was referring to or what kind of 'provocations' they might undertake. The Kremlin earlier confirmed the summit. The two leaders will 'focus on discussing options for achieving a long-term peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian crisis,' Putin aide Yuri Ushakov said, adding: 'This will evidently be a challenging process, but we will engage in it actively and energetically.' - REUTERS

Public urged not to spread false claims over Zara Qairina case

KUALA LUMPUR: The public has been advised not to spread unverified claims or act as a judge in the case of the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said that through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), his ministry had detected false viral content related to the case. "Recently, we saw viral content accusing various parties of colluding in the case (of Zara's death). "That content strayed far from the truth. In fact, there was even an individual who claimed the late Zara had entered a washing machine, but that person has since apologised. "I advise the public not to get carried away and refrain from sharing unverified information. We must understand that the deceased's mother has cooperated with the authorities. "When the family has placed their trust in the authorities, we (the public) should give them space to carry out their duties," he said. He said this when met after the launch of the Federal Territories 2025 Children's Protection Advocacy Programme: Kasih Kanak-Kanak at the Kerinchi People's Housing Project (PPR) here today. Also present were Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri; Social Welfare Department director-general Datuk Che Murad Sayang Ramjan; and Kuala Lumpur JKM director Che Samsuzuki Che Noh. Fahmi, who is also the Lembah Pantai MP, said bullying was now defined as a crime following amendments to the Penal Code passed in Parliament. "Now, the police can investigate bullying under the amended Penal Code, which allows for appropriate punishment against offenders. "For our part, the MCMC has instructed the public to be vigilant and to be careful with all information received. "Do not act as a judge and make your own decisions because we have a legal system that must be followed," he said. Previously, it was reported that Zara Qairina, a Form One student at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha Limauan in Papar, was believed to have fallen from the third floor and was found unconscious in a drain near the hostel at 4am on July 16. The 13-year-old student was later confirmed dead after receiving treatment at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu.

It was reported that the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) has directed the police to conduct the exhumation of her remains for a post-mortem. It said further investigation was necessary to ensure all aspects of the case were thoroughly covered. Zara Qairina's family had requested an inquest to determine whether there was any criminal element in her death.
