46th ASEAN Summit as key milestone towards ASEAN Community Vision 2045
KUALA LUMPUR: The ASEAN Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM) today underscored the importance of the 46th ASEAN Summit as a key milestone in advancing the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, which aims to shape a resilient, innovative, and people-centred regional bloc.
The meeting was chaired by the Foreign Ministry Secretary-General, Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) here.
According to Wisma Putra, it was convened in preparation for the 46th ASEAN Summit, the 2nd ASEAN- Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit, and the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit, which will be held on May 26 to 27.
'The Meeting also recognised the upcoming ASEAN-GCC and ASEAN-GCC-China Summits as critical platforms to enhance ASEAN's external partnerships, particularly in the areas of energy, trade, investment, and sustainable development,' it said in a Facebook post today.
Wisma Putra added that ASEAN SOM leaders, together with the SOM leader of Timor-Leste, also exchanged views on regional developments and matters of mutual interest
According to Wisma Putra, key topics included ASEAN Community building, implementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, ASEAN's external relations, Timor-Leste's progress towards full ASEAN membership, and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC).
The 46th ASEAN Summit is being held under Malaysia's 2025 Chairmanship theme, 'Inclusivity and Sustainability'.
This year also marks the country's fifth time at the helm of the regional bloc, following previous chairmanships in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015.
The ASEAN Summit and its related meetings are expected to address a wide range of pressing regional and global issues, with the situation in Myanmar remaining a critical topic of concern for ASEAN member states.

'I know it's not easy, because this relates to JPJ (Road Transport Department), technology platforms, enforcement and many agencies are involved but coming up with ideas is one thing. Making sure they work is another,' said Abdul Karim. Citing media reports, he pointed out that the bus driver involved in the crash had 18 outstanding traffic summonses, and the vehicle had more than 20. 'That means something is wrong. So, if there is any entity, be it a ministry or any other body, that can address this problem and make the system better, of course we will support it,' he said. In the aftermath of the crash, Motac renewed its call to regain regulatory authority over tourism vehicles, arguing that the current system, overseen by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), lacks a comprehensive safety framework. The ministry said that the earlier transfer of regulatory powers away from Motac created a void in oversight, weakening Malaysia's transport safety assurance mechanisms, particularly as the country prepares for Visit Malaysia Year 2026. The incident has reportedly raised concerns among international stakeholders involved in tourism and student exchange programmes across Asean, the Middle East, China, Japan, and South Korea, potentially affecting Malaysia's image as a safe travel destination.

China affirms trade deal with US, says it ‘always keeps its word and delivers results'
BEIJING, June 12 — China today affirmed a trade deal announced by US President Donald Trump, saying both sides needed to abide by the consensus and adding China always kept its word. The deal, reached after Trump and China's President Xi Jinping spoke on the telephone last week, brings a delicate truce in a trade war between the world's two largest economies. 'China has always kept its word and delivered results,' Lin Jian, a foreign ministry spokesperson, said at a regular news conference. 'Now that a consensus has been reached, both sides should abide by it.' The Trump-Xi telephone call broke a standoff that had flared just weeks after a preliminary deal was reached in Geneva. The call was quickly followed by more talks in London that Washington said had put 'meat on the bones' of the Geneva agreement to ease bilateral retaliatory tariffs. The Geneva deal had faltered over China's continued curbs on minerals exports, prompting the Trump administration to respond with export controls preventing shipments of semiconductor design software, jet engines for Chinese-made planes and other goods to China. Trump yesterday said he was very happy with the trade deal. 'Our deal with China is done, subject to final approval with President Xi and me,' Trump said on Truth Social. 'Full magnets, and any necessary rare earths, will be supplied, up front, by China. Likewise, we will provide to China what was agreed to, including Chinese students using our colleges and universities (which has always been good with me!). Tengku Zafrul yet to decide next move after senatorship ends
KUALA LUMPUR: Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz said he wants to continue serving the country 'politically', with or without a government position, after his term as a senator ends in December. The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister, however, has yet to decide on his next course of action once his senatorship concludes. "I have not thought about it yet. Because there's so much (work) I need to focus on right now. "But my intention after December is to continue contributing in any way I can. "It doesn't have to be a position in government even. You can contribute to the government, and to the country in many ways. So to me, that's important. "But politically, I will want to continue to serve the country. And I've said it before that I've stated my intention to join PKR," he said during a press conference following the Regional Socialisation of the Asean Economic Community (AEC) Strategic Plan under the Asean Community Vision 2045. At the same time, he reaffirmed his commitment to focus on his current responsibilities at the ministry before completing his tenure as a senator, which is set to end in December. "My priority right now is to complete my term as a senator and to conclude various critical matters related to the country's investment and trade sectors, in line with my responsibilities at the ministry. "First and foremost, let me make it clear that I will focus on my current tasks. There is still a lot of work to be done at the ministry, as you are aware," he said. When asked about his position as minister after his senatorship ends, Tengku Zafrul said the matter would be entirely at Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's discretion. "I intend to continue contributing in my capacity at the ministry. However, whether I remain as minister after December depends on the prime minister's decision," he added. Tengku Zafrul reiterated that his decision to leave Umno and join PKR had nothing to do with wanting to take on another role in the government, whether as a minister or Menteri Besar. "I've said many times, even before I resigned from Umno, that I have no intention of contesting in any by-elections. "My decision to resign has nothing to do with wanting a government position, whether as a minister or Menteri Besar," he said. Tengku Zafrul on May 30 had announced his resignations from Umno. He had also announced his intention to join PKR.
