Work from BYU AdLab for Crayola ('Ink Up, Wash Out') was named 'Best of Show' winner in the Student portion of the competition.
The American Advertising Awards are widely acknowledged as the largest and most representative competition of its kind. Campaigns need to advance through both local and regional levels of the three-tier competition before they can become eligible for the national prize. In all, just 51 Gold ADDYs were awarded among Professionals.
'Competition in the ADDYs gives us a chance to see how we stack up against the best in the business,' said Chris Beresford-Hill, Worldwide Chief Creative Officer at BBDO who served as the first-ever Competition Chair for this Year's American Advertising Awards. 'It's exciting to measure our work against the industry's top talents and learn from what others are doing. It pushes us all to elevate our game.' He added, 'I'm thrilled to see so much exceptional work being recognized through the ADDYs. Celebrating these achievements not only highlights our creativity but also reinforces the impact of effective advertising on our clients' success.'
'The Other Hand' campaign notes how '99% of people eat Cheetos with their dominant hand. Using your other hand? It's a Cheetos thing.' It's the second time in the past three years that work for Cheetos from Goodby Silverstein & Partners has taken home 'Best of Show.'
In addition to the overall 'Bests of Show,' other notable campaigns recognized at this year's American Advertising Awards included:

Guangzhou and Shenzhen feel chill of global trade headwinds, miss China's GDP mark

BEIJING, Aug 1 — Once key drivers of growth in China's southern province of Guangdong, the cities of Shenzhen and Guangzhou are now showing signs of economic fatigue, with both reporting gross domestic product (GDP) growth figures that fell below the national average in the first half of 2025. Shenzhen, known as a major tech hub, recorded 5.1 per cent growth in the January to June period, while the manufacturing-heavy Guangzhou posted 3.8 per cent, compared to the national rate of 5.3 per cent, according to the South China Morning Post. The slowdown in both cities has sparked calls for stronger policy support to revitalise business activity, amid weakening global demand and domestic consumption that remains too sluggish to compensate, analysts said. 'Shenzhen is facing dual headwinds from weakening global demand and a local property downturn, particularly in the commercial real estate sector, which has dragged down both exports and investment,' said Peng Peng, executive chairman of the Guangdong Society of Reform, a think tank linked to the provincial government. The downturn in Shenzhen is especially stark. Official city data cited fixed-asset investment plunging 10.9 per cent year-on-year, while real estate development tumbling 15.1 per cent — a sign of waning investor confidence. Although the city's hi-tech industries posted over 35 per cent growth, exports dropped 7 per cent and total trade declined 1.1 per cent, underlining the ongoing strain from trade tensions and technology restrictions imposed by the United States. 'The decline in fixed investment in Shenzhen was somewhat unexpected, particularly the steep fall in real estate investment. Office vacancy rates in the city remain high,' Peng added. In provincial capital Guangzhou, economic recovery remains uneven, with growth weighed down by weak performance in two of its core industries — autos and property. Large-scale industrial firms in the city saw their value-added output increase 0.7 per cent year-on-year in the first half of 2025, ending a 15-month contraction streak. Property investment also turned positive, rising 4.1 per cent after three straight years of decline. However, key sectors continue to struggle — especially the fuel-powered automobile industry, where output shrank 5.7 per cent, highlighting the challenges of industrial restructuring. On a more positive note, Guangzhou's exports jumped 25.2 per cent year-on-year — the highest growth among China's top 10 trading cities. Shipments to Africa, Asean and the European Union surged over 30 per cent, reflecting growing efforts to diversify beyond the US market. 'This rebound partly stems from a low base last year, but also from Guangzhou's export structure, which relies more on intermediate goods and less on consumer products,' said Wang Zhen, a researcher at the Shenzhen-based China Development Institute, in an interview with news portal 'That makes it less exposed than Shenzhen to global trade shocks.' Long seen as a bellwether for China's economy and its global ties, Guangzhou has in recent years fallen behind the south-western city of Chongqing in total GDP output. Whether either city can stage a rebound in the second half of the year will depend largely on improvements in trade flows and the recovery of core industries, Peng said. 'The stabilisation of the real estate market will take time. Foreign trade uncertainties persist, and employment and income prospects are not optimistic. Confidence is fragile, and a decline in consumption may become common,' he warned.

Multi-tier levy for foreign workers delayed to 2026

The multi-tier levy was supposed to be introduced under the 12th Malaysia Plan as part of efforts to reduce the percentage of foreign workers in the total workforce to below 15%. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Implementation of the multi-tier levy mechanism for migrant workers has been delayed to next year, based on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). The government initially intended to introduce the mechanism some time this year, but human resources minister Steven Sim said in March that Putrajaya would engage all stakeholders before implementing it. The 13MP document stated that labour reforms would be expedited to establish a more dynamic, competitive, and sustainable job market while increasing the income of Malaysians. 'Steps will be taken to reduce the dependence on foreign workers to 10% of the workforce by 2030 and 5% by 2035. The intake of foreign workers will consider the need for manpower in sectors categorised as dirty, dangerous, and difficult. 'Besides that, the multi-tier levy mechanism will be implemented in 2026,' it said. It said this would open up job opportunities for Malaysians and allow them to upskill, paving the way for them to earn a higher income. The multi-tier levy was supposed to be introduced under the 12th Malaysia Plan as part of efforts to reduce the percentage of foreign workers in the total workforce to below 15%. In December, the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) urged Putrajaya to provide details on the implementation of the mechanism. FMM said the details should be announced six months in advance to give industries sufficient time to adapt.

Sabah going big into tuna

Published on: Thursday, July 31, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 By: Larry Ralon Text Size: Hajiji (centre) with other dignitaries at the signing of the MoA between DBKK and Alpha Ocean Resources Berhad. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah is on the right track to becoming the region's leading deep-sea fishing hub, thanks to its various strategic advantages, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. According to him, the State is not only located along the international tuna migration route but also boasts sheltered natural harbours and proximity to major producers such as Indonesia, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. 'We possess all the prerequisites, in terms of location, resources, infrastructure and policy support, to drive Sabah as a centre for the landing, processing and export of deep-sea fishery products at international standards,' he said during the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between City Hall (DBKK) and Petco Trading Labuan Company Ltd, as well as a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between DBKK and Alpha Ocean Resources Berhad (AORB) at Pacific Sutera Hotel, Wednesday. Hajiji said under the MoA, AORB will invest RM360 million to develop a European Union (EU)-standard port in Kota Kinabalu, specifically for the landing of tuna and other deep-sea fishery products. He said the project is expected to be completed within 18 months and will create over 1,000 jobs across the industry value chain. 'This port will comply with the EU's strict standards, including Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), traceability systems, monitoring of Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing and comprehensive food safety requirements. 'With this facility, we will be able to tap into premium export markets, which have so far remained inaccessible due to the lack of suitable infrastructure,' he stressed. He said Malaysia's participation in the Western & Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) will enable the new port to serve as an authorised landing base for registered fishing vessels from around the world. 'With projections of 1,000 vessels a year, each carrying an average of 50 tonnes of catch, Sabah has the potential to land 50,000 tonnes of tuna annually, generating an estimated RM1.8 billion in economic value,' he said. He added that the economic benefits will not be limited to the catch alone, but will extend to various supporting sectors such as ice supply, bunkering services, food and beverage and technical services. At the same time, Hajiji emphasised that the development of this industry will not overlook the welfare of local fishing communities. An inclusive development model will ensure the participation of coastal fishermen in downstream value-added activities. 'We will continue to uphold sustainable environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices – protecting the environment, communities and governance – to ensure the continuity of marine ecosystems and the economic wellbeing of our people,' he said. At the same event, DBKK also signed a MoU with Petco Trading Labuan Company Ltd to develop a biogas energy complex at Kayu Madang landfill site. The project will convert methane gas from solid waste into two megawatts of green electricity. 'This energy will directly benefit the manufacturing sector at Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP). It is a prime example of a circular economy approach, where waste from one sector becomes an energy source for another,' he said. Hajiji said both initiatives align with Sabah Blue Economy agenda, which emphasises sustainable development, value addition in the fisheries industry and the transition to clean energy. 'The successful attraction of these investments reflects strong investor confidence in Sabah's economic prospects. I am confident that the synergy between DBKK, the private sector and the State Government will accelerate economic growth and create more job opportunities for the people,' he said. He also expressed appreciation to DBKK for its ongoing efforts in driving city development and to both companies for choosing Sabah as their strategic investment destination. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
