Credit card delinquencies in the 91–360 days overdue category rose 44.3 per cent year-on-year, from Rs 23,475.6 crore in March 2024 to Rs 33,886.5 crore in March 2025, according to a report by CRIF High Mark. These figures underline the need for customers to be more cautious in their use of credit cards.
Reasons for rising NPAs
A major reason for rising credit card NPAs is the minimum payment mindset. 'According to a report by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), only 40 per cent of Indian credit card holders repay their full outstanding amount every month. This encourages prolonged debt cycles

Delhi HC denies bail to DHFL promoter Kapil Wadhawan in bank fraud case

New Delhi: The Delhi high court denied bail on Monday to DHFL promoter Kapil Wadhawan in an alleged Rs 34,926-crore bank fraud case, noting that his "conduct during custody was not beyond reproach". Justice Ravinder Dudeja rejected his bail plea, saying such economic offences were not only crimes against specific victims but against the financial system at large. The CBI alleged Wadhawan, as promoter and CMD of DHFL, was the principal architect of a massive financial fraud involving diversion and misappropriation of approximately Rs 34,926 crore from a consortium of 17 banks. "The allegations regarding manipulation of valuable assets and transactions carried out during judicial custody are grave and suggest that the applicant continues to exercise significant control and influence," the HC observed. "The court cannot permit the release of a person who is prima facie the mastermind of a deep-rooted financial fraud, especially when the trial is at a nascent stage," it concluded, noting that if released on bail he might tamper with evidence or, worse, flee from justice. "Many of the witnesses in this case are stated to be either ex-employees or associates of DHFL and, as such, there is a high risk and possibility that the petitioner might try to influence witnesses," it said. Wadhawan is accused of creating and operating 87 shell companies in the names of associates, employees, and relatives to siphon off funds, falsely recorded as retail housing loans to over 2.6 lakh fictitious customers through a non-existent "Bandra Branch-001" in DHFL's internal systems. He was taken into custody in the case on July 19, 2022, and granted default statutory bail on Dec 3, 2022, but the Supreme Court cancelled his bail on Jan 24, 2024. The court observed his "effective custody" was two years, and not four years as claimed. "Having regard to the nature and seriousness of the allegations, the gravity of the offence, the applicant's central role in the conspiracy, the potential adverse impact of his release on the trial, and the huge magnitude of the funds siphoned off, this court finds no merit in the present application," the order held.

HC frees Margadarsi from criminal liability in 18-yr-old case

Hyderabad: In a major relief to the successors of the Margadarsi group, founded by the late media baron Ch Ramoji Rao, Telangana high court on Monday quashed the criminal cases filed against Margadarsi Financiers by the former Andhra Pradesh govt in 2008. A division bench comprising Justice P Sam Koshy and Justice K Sujana ruled that the case stood abated following the death of Ramoji Rao last year. The court held that in the absence of the main accused, further prosecution of the company could not continue effectively. The ruling thus brings a long-pending legal battle to a close, nearly 18 years after the original case was filed. You Can Also Check: Hyderabad AQI | Weather in Hyderabad | Bank Holidays in Hyderabad | Public Holidays in Hyderabad The AP govt had alleged that Margadarsi collected public deposits without legal permission, violating provisions of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Act. The firm, however, argued that it was functioning as a Hindu joint family business, which is not prohibited under law, and that the restrictions cited in the RBI Act applied only to non-banking financial companies. The RBI opposed this argument, asserting that the charges were against the corporate entity, not just Ramoji Rao. It said the business operations of Margadarsi Financiers were still active, and the legal question of whether it had accepted deposits in violation of the RBI Act remained unresolved. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Biggest Real Estate Discounts Ever at M3M India. However, Justice Koshy, announcing the court's decision, stated that prosecution could not move forward in the absence of the key individual accused and allowed the company's plea. Margadarsi was represented by a team of senior advocates, including S Nagamurthy, Mukul Rohatgi, and Siddharth Luthra. The RBI was represented by senior counsel L Ravichander, and the AP govt by public prosecutor Palle Nageshwar Rao. The high court also closed the petitions filed by the current management of the company seeking to be made parties in the case. Since the main petition was allowed and the criminal cases quashed, their applications were declared closed.

Jeera, isabgol trade ifeels the heat as US imposes 25% tariff

Ahmedabad: India's spice exporters are feeling the heat after the United States imposed a 25% tariff on cumin (jeera) imports from India. The move, exporters warn, could dent the country's spice trade. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to the Federation of Indian Spice Stakeholders (FISS), the tariff imposition could impact cumin trade by at least 15% in volumes, despite India being the key sourcing market for both these spices. U Karthick, vice-president of FISS, said, "The US is the biggest spice buyer from India after China, particularly for cumin seeds. Gujarat is currently the sole sourcing market given the reduced crop yield in countries like Syria, Iran, Turkey, Pakistan and Egypt, which is a result of geopolitical conflicts. Despite this, the sudden increase in duties will be difficult for traders and is likely to impact demand in the longer term. " The blow is even more severe for psyllium husk (isabgol), a commodity widely exported to the US. "So far, a 10% duty was imposed on psyllium husk, which has now been raised to 25%. This crop is widely used in pharma and bakery-related applications and, therefore, the product will get expensive, which may impact consumption," explained Dinesh Patel, ex-chairman of the agriculture produce market committee (APMC) Unjha. The Unjha market yard is among the largest spice trading hubs in the country, and a bulk of both domestic and global trade of cumin seeds, coriander, fennel seeds, and psyllium husk takes place from here. Rakesh Patel, secretary of the Isabgul Processors Association, said, "If duty is imposed, the cost will have to be borne by the US residents as India is the biggest supplier. There will be some initial setbacks in the trade, but things will settle in the next couple of months. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now " FISS estimates suggest that India's cumin production for the current season is pegged at 5.38 lakh MT, slightly down from last year's 6.05 lakh MT, due to erratic weather conditions resulting in a 5% crop reduction. However, when combined with 0.8 to 1.1 lakh MT of stock carried over from the previous season, the effective availability remains robustly at over 6 lakh MT. "Though these countries still depend on India for supply, such high tariffs from major markets like the US will hurt procurement cycles and business planning," Karthick explained. Prices of jeera have recently declined due to the subdued export sentiment to China. In 2025, the total estimated production of psyllium husk across India stands at 2.36 lakh MT. Around 20% of this is consumed locally, while the rest is exported, with the US accounting for 50% of the exports. The export value of isabgol alone is pegged at Rs 3,500 crore, while the combined domestic and international market turnover is hovering around Rs 5,000 crore. Spice exporters and traders, who mostly ship whole spices to the US and China, are now facing pressure from importers to absorb the cost of duties, according to FISS sources. "This has become increasingly unsustainable, especially as importers value-add these whole spices into powders, blends, nutraceutical ingredients, and other consumer-ready products, which are then exported globally," said Karthick. The challenge is two-fold: mitigating the near-term impact of the US tariffs and preparing for a more resilient, diversified future. Exporters are calling for urgent policy support, deeper market access agreements, and incentives for value-added exports.
