Warning against buying aged military assets
Speaking at the 60th Anniversary Parade of Rejimen Gerak Khas at Kem Iskandar in Mersing yesterday, Sultan Ibrahim cited the country's purchase of second-hand A-4 Skyhawk jets from the United States in the 1980s, which were eventually retired due to a high accident rate.
'Don't make the same mistake. Are we going to put our pilots in 'flying coffins'? Think for yourselves.'
The King urged Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin to cancel a proposed procurement of more than 30-year-old Black Hawk helicopters, warning that decisions based on the influence of agents or vested interests could endanger lives and waste public funds.
'I believe this keeps happening because the ministry is full of agents or ex-generals turned salesmen, even textile traders trying to sell drones.'
The Royal Malaysian Air Force had acquired 80 units of the A-4 Skyhawk, developed by McDonnell-Douglas (now Boeing), from the United States in 1982 at US$1 million each.
His Majesty emphasised the need for transparency and cost-efficiency in all defence acquisitions, while calling out past purchases made at inflated prices.
He cited the example of a rigid raiding craft bought for RM5 million, saying a better vessel could have been sourced for under RM2 million.
'Do not waste money on items that don't meet military needs. If you don't know the market price, ask me.'
The King also criticised the delay in completing Rejimen Gerak Khas' combat diving pool and urged the government to prioritise operational readiness with appropriate and timely equipment upgrades.

Govt may add RM100 aid for university students in Budget 2026
CYBERJAYA: The government is prepared to evaluate an additional one-off RM100 aid for university students to ease their financial burdens. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed the proposal will be reviewed for Budget 2026, set for tabling in October. He addressed the suggestion during the Temu Anwar programme after a student representative from Multimedia University (MMU) raised the issue. Anwar noted that the government had earlier approved RM100 cash aid for all Malaysians aged 18 and above. 'I welcome the proposal by the student president and I will give it due consideration for the October budget,' he said. On living costs, Anwar reiterated that essential goods like cooking oil, chicken, eggs, and sugar remain among the region's most affordable. He emphasised that tackling poverty and easing public burdens remain his top priorities as prime minister. 'If asked what issue worries me most, I remain most concerned about hardcore poverty and the people's burdens,' he added. Anwar clarified that recent salary adjustments excluded ministers, deputies, and MPs to prioritise fiscal responsibility. He reaffirmed the need for transparent procurement processes to maximise national savings. The government's anti-leakage measures have reportedly recovered RM4 billion to RM5 billion in misappropriated funds. 'How much has been recovered by the Inland Revenue Board and MACC? It has reached RM4 billion, RM5 billion,' Anwar stated. He stressed that recovered funds are redirected to public welfare rather than political interests. 'Imagine, RM5 billion had gone to certain people illegally, but we are returning it to the people,' he said. - Bernama

'On the domestic front, we remain optimistic on the positive developments in improving geopolitical conditions. The benchmark index is currently retesting the 1,585 resistance level and closed the session at 1,584.96, just below this immediate threshold,' he told Bernama.

Rubber Market Ends Lower Amid Mixed Regional Rubber Market Performances
WORLD By Engku Shariful Azni Engku Ab Latif KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian rubber market closed lower on Monday, weighed down by mixed performances in the regional rubber futures markets, a dealer said. She said market sentiment was influenced by ongoing uncertainties surrounding the US economic outlook and the escalating Middle East crisis. "Nevertheless, further losses were limited by rising crude oil prices amid optimism over the US-Russia dialogue on a Ukraine ceasefire," she told Bernama today. She said Thailand's meteorological agency warned of heavy rains and accumulations that may cause flash floods and overflows from Aug 17-18 and Aug 22-23. At 3 pm, the Malaysian Rubber Board reported that the price of Standard Malaysian Rubber (SMR) 20 was down 7.5 sen to 729 sen per kilogramme (kg), while latex in bulk slid 3.5 sen to 568.50 sen per kg. -- BERNAMA
