New Hospitals, Flyovers Soon As Delhi Ramps Up Health, Transport Infrastructure
Delhi is ramping up its health infrastructure, with over 1,300 new hospital beds almost ready across four government hospitals, and the construction of seven hospitals with ICU facilities is underway in the city.
At a recent high-level review meeting, the Public Works Department (PWD) briefed Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on the status of key projects of the department.
"These hospitals are almost ready. Furniture is being installed and fire safety approvals are in the final stages," a senior PWD official said. The new beds are expected to be operational within the next few months.
According to the officials, construction of new blocks is underway at Acharya Shree Bhikshu, Dada Dev, Guru Gobind Singh, and Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospitals, where the work was undertaken by the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in 2019-20, but could not be completed due to the lack of funds.
Additionally, the government is also constructing 11 new hospitals, including seven with Intensive Care Unit (ICU) facilities. At least 13 health centres are being expanded as part of a broader medical infrastructure upgrade.
A mix of public-private partnerships and fully government-funded models are being used to ensure quality.
Court Infrastructure Projects Lag Behind
While health infrastructure projects are showing progress, the administration is under growing pressure to accelerate work on court complexes and transport upgrades.
"We've made good progress on health but need to pick up pace on courts and transport. The next few months are critical," a government source told NDTV.
Court infrastructure projects at Shastri Park, Karkardooma, and Rohini are facing delays due to technical challenges, including high groundwater levels and pending design finalisations as key reasons for the delay, officials said.
On the transport front, the Delhi government has sought Rs 953 crore from the Centre under the Central Road Fund to repair and resurface 400 km of roads damaged by monsoon rains and delayed maintenance.
Additionally, the Urban Development Fund (UDF) has requested Rs 1,000 crore to fast-track stalled infrastructure projects, including long-pending flyovers and underpasses.
Two major flyovers, at Modi Mill and Savitri Cinema intersections on the Outer Ring Road, have received clearance at a total cost of Rs 412 crore. Both sites are known for chronic congestion, and the government hopes the new structures will ease traffic snarls once operational.

Kolkata: The West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission (WBCERC) has directed the health officials to suspend the licence of nursing home on Diamond Harbour Road after a person who was not a doctor attended to a pregnant woman, who ultimately suffered a miscarriage. A penal amount of Rs 1 lakh has also been imposed on the nursing home. According to the complaint lodged with the health panel, Alka Roy was taken to Bellona Nursing home in Mominpore with severe abdominal pain at night. The health panel said that while not going into whether the injection caused the miscarriage or not, Kumar posing as a doctor, and prescribing and administering an injection itself was a criminal offence. The commission also asked how the medical director could leave blank prescription letterheads bearing his signature which Kumar could access. "We have asked the police to take Kumar into custody and come to a logical conclusion," Banerjee added. Till health officials submit a complete report on the case to the commission, the nursing home has been barred from admitting any new patient. However, it can continue treatment of patients who are already admitted.

In his address, Singh reiterated India's target to eliminate tuberculosis by 2025, five years ahead of the global goal, stressing the urgency of intensified efforts with only six months remaining. He emphasised that success depends on collective action beyond the health department, highlighting improved diagnostics and accessible medicines that have made TB more manageable. Singh commended health officials and volunteers but noted a shortfall in nutritional support — of 1,501 TB patients under treatment in Mizoram, only 117 (7.8%) receive food aid. He pledged personal support for 10 patients and appealed to civil societies, churches and all stakeholders to ensure every patient receives adequate nutrition, aiming to make Mizoram India's first TB-free state. State health minister Lalrinpuii underscored govt initiatives such as free testing, medicines and monthly nutritional aid of Rs 1,000 credited to patients' accounts.

GMC cracks down on eateries, slaps fine for hygiene breach
1 2 Guwahati: Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has ramped up its enforcement efforts against eateries and meat shops, slapping fines totaling in lakhs for breaches of hygiene and safety standards. This intensified crackdown aims to enforce public health regulations and uphold cleanliness across the city. On Tuesday, the GMC's veterinary and enforcement branches conducted inspections in Chandmari, Bamunimaidam, Hatigarh Chariali, Narengi, and Satgaon. They scrutinized over 38 meat shops, imposing a Rs 20,000 fine for hygiene violations. GMC assistant commissioner Gitanjali Pathak said, "The health and veterinary branches of GMC are conducting regular monitoring and surprise inspections of eateries and meat shops to ensure compliance with hygiene norms. These checks are being carried out to safeguard public health and ensure that customers who buy or consume food from these establishments are protected." Pathak said while some establishments adhere to GMC Act standards, many fall short, with common infractions including poor waste management and inadequate cleanliness. The crackdown began last Friday with a raid on a Paltan Bazar hotel, resulting in a Rs 1,50,000 fine for multiple violations, including improper food storage and lack of a valid trade licence. Subsequently, two fast food outlets in Birubari were fined Rs 8,000 for similar offences. GMC has issued stern warnings to several shop owners, demanding immediate improvements in facilities and food-handling practices. Repeat offenders face the threat of harsher penalties.
