Raj Thackeray Says "Only Marathi, English Should Be Taught From 1st Grade"

NDTVa day ago

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Raj Thackeray on Wednesday appealed to state School Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse to issue a written order "as soon as possible" stating that only two languages, Marathi and English, would be taught from the first grade and Hindi would not be made compulsory as third language.
"We have information that based on the earlier decision to teach three languages, including Hindi, the printing of Hindi language textbooks has already begun. Now that the books have been printed, is the government planning to backtrack on its own decision? I assume there is no such plan, but if something like this happens, the government will be responsible for the agitation that the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena will launch," the MNS chief said.
"Many states in the country have adopted only two languages from the first grade and rejected the imposition of Hindi, the reason being their linguistic identity. You (addressing Bhuse) and your fellow Cabinet members are also Marathi by birth; when will you act like the leaders of other states who oppose Hindi and protect the identity of your language, and how will you nurture it? We expect the government to show the same strong sense of identity as those other states," he said.
For the past nearly two months, there has been confusion regarding the teaching of the Hindi language starting from the first grade in Maharashtra.
Initially, it was announced that students would be taught three languages from the first grade, with Hindi being the third mandatory language. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena raised its voice against this, which led to the formation of strong public sentiment.
"This public sentiment was so intense that the government declared that Hindi would not be made mandatory as the third language," Raj Thackeray said.
"Fundamentally, Hindi is not a national language; it is just one of the languages spoken in other states of the country. Why was there an insistence on making it mandatory to learn? It is unclear why the government was wavering under some pressure. However, the core issue remains: why force children to learn three languages from first grade?
"Regarding this, you also announced that in schools following the Maharashtra State Education Board curriculum, only two languages would be taught from the first grade. But why has the written order for this announcement not been issued yet?" asked Thackeray.
His letter comes at a time when the government has backtracked on its move to make Hindi language compulsory after Marathi and English in Classes 1 to 5 amid strong opposition from various stakeholders.
Although Mr Bhuse last month announced that the government would take a decision on making Hindi a third language compulsory after talks, it has not yet issued any government notification.

Putin navigating waters with consummate skill: says foreign affairs expert after Russia credits Trump for India-Pak mediation

New Delhi [India], June 6 (ANI): As Russian aide Yury Ushakov endorsed United States President Donald Trump's claim of mediating between India and Pakistan, former diplomat and foreign affairs expert K P Fabian said on Friday that it was simply a diplomatic move by Russia amid friction regarding the Ukraine war. The former diplomat said that the Russian president is 'navigating waters with consummate skill,' as the country has rejected Trump's demand for an unconditional ceasefire with Ukraine. He also voiced his belief that India could have acknowledged Trump's claim in a 'gracious way' without diminishing India's victory with Operation Sindoor. 'My personal view, let me repeat it, India could have acknowledged it (Trump's mediation claims) in a gracious manner without diminishing in any way from India's great victory. Now Russia has said it, partly true. Look at the context; Russia is being difficult with Trump about Ukraine. Trump has been asking for a practically unconditional ceasefire, which Putin has refused. So he was navigating waters with consummate skill,' Fabian told ANI here. While Fabian agreed that the US was in contact with both Islamabad and New Delhi but it was not India that had requested mediation, but it could be assumed that Pakistan did, which was subsequently pushed in the 'right direction' by the US. 'Both (US) Vice President Vance and Secretary of State (Marco) Rubio were in touch with both Islamabad and New Delhi. At some point in time, when the Indian Air Force was able to strike hard, Pakistan did not know what to do, whether to escalate or de-escalate or ask for a ceasefire. At that point, Washington pushed Pakistan in the right direction,' he said. Fabian, however, did not agree to Trump's claim of mediating talks, calling it a 'violence of the English language.' he said that mediation can only happen when both sides ask for it. 'Trump said there was mediation, now that is...a slight violence to the English language, because there can be mediation between A and B by C, only if A and B ask C. In this case, we may assume that Pakistan did ask, but we also know that India did not ask, so there was no mediation, from which it doesn't follow that Trump did not contribute to the ceasefire,' the former diplomat said. Both India and Pakistan announced an understanding on the cessation of hostilities on May 10, following the Pakistani Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) calling his Indian counterpart to discuss the issue. India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 and struck nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir in response to a ghastly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam in which 26 people were killed. The operation targeted terror infrastructure inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, eliminating over 100 terrorists linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. Following the strikes, Pakistan retaliated with cross-border shelling and attempted drone attacks. In response, India launched coordinated airstrikes that damaged key military infrastructure across 11 Pakistani airbases. (ANI)

Ashwini Vaishnaw shares video of Anji, India's first cable-stayed rail bridge that PM Modi will inaugurate today

Reasi (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 6 (ANI): Ahead of its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday shared a captivating video of India's first cable-stayed railway bridge, the Anji Bridge, built on the Anji River in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district. The video, posted on X, was accompanied by a Hindi caption that read, 'Think firmly, There is a wide path of virtue, Keep moving forward. Keep moving forward.' Anji Bridge is the country's 'first cable-stayed bridge' of Indian Railways connecting Katra and Reasi in Jammu and Kashmir. The bridge is a part of the national project of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) Project. The bridge is located in the young fold mountains of the Himalayas, having extremely complex, fragile and daunting geological features in the form of faults, folds and thrusts and besides the seismic proneness of the region. The Anji Khad Bridge rises boldly across the rugged Himalayan terrain, standing as India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. It spans the deep Anji River valley, south of the Chenab, connecting the Katra Banihal section of the Udhampur Srinagar Baramulla Rail Line. About 80 kilometres from Jammu city, the bridge is set against a striking backdrop of snow-covered peaks. Towering 331 metres above the riverbed and stretching 725 metres across, it is anchored by 96 high tensile cables. At its heart stands an inverted Y-shaped pylon that climbs 193 metres above its foundation. The total length of cable strand used in the bridge is an impressive 653 kilometres. Remarkably, the entire structure was completed in just 11 months, as per the official release. Over 8,200 metric tonnes of structural steel have gone into its construction, ensuring strength and durability in a region shaped by young, restless mountains. Built to endure tremors, strong winds and shifting geology, the Anji Khad Bridge is more than an engineering feat. It is a symbol of human will and vision. As part of the Udhampur Srinagar Baramulla Rail Link, it promises to bring smoother travel, faster transit and greater economic opportunities to the region. (ANI)

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) protests KDMC's garbage tax hike; warns of agitation ahead of Raj Thackeray's visit

MNS protests KDMC's hike in garbage charges from Rs 600 to Rs 900 KALYAN: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) organised a major protest rally against the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation's (KDMC) plan to increase the solid waste charges under property tax from Rs 600 to Rs 900. During the protest, a delegation led by MNS's Thane District President, Avinash Jadhav, met KDMC officials and demanded the cancellation of the increased garbage charges. KDMC Commissioner Abhinav Goel explained to the delegation the benefits of the newly launched cleanliness drive for the city. However, Jadhav insisted the additional charge must be scrapped. He warned, 'If you are going to take money from citizens' homes for the benefit of contractors, we will oppose it. Don't expect peace from us.' Ulhas Bhoir, MNS's Kalyan City President, added, 'We have given KDMC time to withdraw the increased charges before MNS Chief Raj Thackeray's visit on 16 June. If not, we will protest in true MNS style.' Earlier, UBT leaders and citizen activist Shrinivas Ghanekar had also opposed the hike in garbage tax.
