Chilling moment Shannon Matthews' mum pleads ‘bring her home' while hiding dark secret
A shocking kidnapping case is the subject of a new Prime Video documentary released this week.
Nine-year-old Shannon Matthews went missing in February 2008 as she walked home, sparking a 24-day search for her. The hunt was the largest conducted by West Yorkshire Police since their search for the Yorkshire Ripper, with the police investigation alone costing the force £3.2m.
In a horrifying twist in the story, it emerged that Shannon's mother Karen Matthews and her partner in crime Michael Donovan had staged the kidnapping in order to claim the £50,000 reward for finding the girl. The Hunt for Shannon Matthews is released on Sunday this week (August 17) and revisits the chilling case 17 years on.

Shannon was eventually found by police imprisoned and drugged in the base of a divan bed in Michael's flat while the ruse played out. She had also been restrained by a homemade lead.
While her daughter was still missing, Karen gave an impromptu press release outside of her house in which she pleaded for Shannon's safe return, all while knowing exactly where she was. Footage of the chilling moment is shown in the upcoming documentary.
In it, Karen can be seen bleary-eyed and looking distraught as she tells cameras: "Please come home Shannon if you're out there come home. If anybody's got my daughter, my beautiful princess daughter please bring her home safe."
Karen, then aged 33, and Michael, aged 40 at the time, were found guilty of kidnap, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice. They were each jailed for eight years for their crimes, which the judge called "truly despicable."
He said: "It is impossible to conceive how you could have found it in you to put this young girl through the ordeal that you inflicted upon her."
When her mother was on trial, it was revealed that following the kidnapping, Shannon suffered from frequent nightmares and required psychotherapy sessions.
Michael died in April 2024 at the age of 54, while Karen was released from prison in 2012. Meanwhile Shannon was placed into care with her siblings and given a new identity.

Pictured: Father who was gunned down behind pizza takeaway in 'drive-by shooting' - as police continue manhunt for killer in 'stolen car'
A father who was gunned down behind a pizza takeaway in a 'drive-by shooting' has been pictured as police continue their manhunt for his killer in a 'stolen car'. Dale Stogden, also known as Brett, was shot near a petrol station on Doncaster Road, Wakefield, at 9.43pm on Tuesday, August 12. Police believe that the vehicle used was on false plates and had been stolen in a burglary in Castleford on August 3. Following the shooting, Mr Stogden, a 50-year-old from Wakefield, was rushed to hospital where he sadly later died from his injuries. West Yorkshire Police have arrested three men on suspicion of murder, aged 19, 20, 27, from addresses in the Ossett and Lupset areas of the city. They currently remain in police custody. Now, his heartbroken daughters have paid tribute to their beloved father, pleading with the gunman responsible for his 'cruel' death to come forward. Adding that they have been left in 'complete shock' by the unexpected loss of their father 'in such horrific, violent circumstances', their statement continued: 'We will miss him, and our breakfast get togethers. 'We will miss his big smile. Dad, we hope you are no longer in pain and that you can rest in peace. We will always love and miss you.' His daughters also implored the person responsible for their father's murder to contact the police, adding: 'We would like to ask the person who took our dad's life so cruelly, please hand yourself in then we can have some closure and lay him to rest.' The force said that they are continuing to follow 'multiple' lines of enquiry, following a 'strong response' to the public appeals for information. On Wednesday evening, a Toyota RAV4 car which police believe was used in the offence was recovered after being found abandoned at an address on Dunbar Street, Wakefield and is now being recovered for police analysis. It was described as being distinctive due to having bull lights on the roof above the windshield. The driver was driving in the direction of Wakefield before turning around near the BP petrol station immediately before the shooting and then driving off in the same direction they came from. Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team who is leading the investigation said: 'We are determined to get answers for Brett's family and ensure that those involved in this senseless crime are brought to justice. 'I would like to extend my thanks again to those who have already provided information to assist this investigation. 'I would like to reassure you that there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes and all available lines of enquiry are being followed up.' Any motorists who were in the Doncaster Road area, described as 'busy on most evenings', between 9.30pm and 9.45pm on August 3 have been urged to check their dashcam footage. Pictured: police seen investigating in a bush and nearby bin following the shooting on August 12 DCI Entwistle previously said that he understood 'the shock and concern' that the incident will have caused for the general publics, 'particularly given that a firearm has been involved'. He added that the force were 'dedicating significant resources to this investigation and our neighbourhood policing colleagues are supporting this with an increased presence in the area to provide reassurance to the community.' Any motorists who were in the Doncaster Road area, described as 'busy on most evenings', between 9.30pm and 9.45pm on August 3 have been urged to check their dashcam footage. Those with relevant information or who witnessed any part of the incident have been asked to contact the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team via Live Chat online or by calling 101 and quoting Operation Ploughland.

‘Is THIS why she did it?' Shannon Matthews' mum's friend makes shock kidnapping claim in new documentary
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SHANNON Matthews' mum stunned the nation when cops uncovered she had plotted the kidnap of her own daughter. The evil mother concocted her diabolical plan, with the help of the late Michael Donovan, in February 2008 in the West Yorkshire town of Dewsbury. Little Shannon was eventually found in the base of a divan bed at Donovan's flat. Donovan was the uncle of Karen Matthews' then-boyfriend Craig Meehan. It's thought the pair devised the fake kidnapping in a bid to claim the £50,000 reward money for eventually "finding" Shannon. They had planned to release the schoolgirl, "discover her" then take her to a police station and claim the reward before splitting. Donovan and Matthews were sentenced to eight years in jail each for the kidnapping. In April 2024, Donovan died from throat cancer. Meanwhile convicted paedophile Craig Meehan, and Karen's ex-boyfriend of five years, was never charged in connection with the abduction. He was however charged and found guilty of possessing child abuse images after detectives seized computer equipment from the house they shared at the time in Dewsbury. Meehan, then 22, was jailed in 2008 for 20 weeks. Brit boy, 6, arrested in £1.6m smuggling plot after 14kgs of drugs found stuffed in his case when he landed in Mauritius Now in a new documentary, The Hunt for Shannon Matthews | Mother Kidnaps Own Daughter, a former friend of Karen made a shocking claim. Petra Jamieson revealed a possible motive for the unthinkable plot. She said: "Did Karen know that Craig [Shannon's stepdad] had all those images of his computer? "Maybe she did. Maybe that's the reason she did what she did. To get Shannon away from him." 7 Petra Jamieson revealed a possible motive for the unthinkable plot. She said she didn't tell police were Shannon was as she was scared "everybody would have a go at [her] for it". The mum-of-six's shocking admission came after Shannon was found drugged and tethered in a relative's grubby flat. In the disturbing interview Karen says she phoned police "so nobody would suspect her" after her daughter vanished. At one point the detective asks Karen if she phones police as "part of an act to make it look like she was missing, when she really knew she wasn't missing"- and the mum agrees this is what she had done. When the detective asks why she didn't tell police where Shannon was when they came to the house, the bleary-eyed mum says: "Because I was in front of everybody and everybody would have had a go at me for it." She then tries to backtrack, claiming she "knew Shannon was somewhere, but didn't know where". Matthews previously confessed to her role in the despicable scheme to pal Natalie Brown, another neighbour Julie Bushby and a police officer. Detective Constable Paul Kettlewell found Shannon hiding under a bed, tied up with a rope and drugged. As he retraced his footsteps for a BBC documentary, DC Kettlewell said: "When we gained a landing we found a further door that was locked. "And then I heard Shannon's voice from within this bedroom. I clearly heard her say 'stop it you're frightening me now'. "Although I knew I'd heard her, I didn't know where she was. And then I became aware of movement within the bed. "As I went across to the far side of the bed, Shannon's head appeared on that side. I reached over, picked Shannon up and carried her out. I couldn't believe that I'd found her. "We had Shannon and she was alive, I just couldn't believe it." The policeman added: "I asked her where Mike was. She said: 'He was where I was.' I said: 'In the house?' And she said: 'Under the bed.'" Following the horrific ordeal Shannon was taken off Karen and placed in the care of her local authority after the trial. She was given a new identity and is now living with a new family.
