Mitch Hay, Muhammad Abbas, Zak Foulkes and Adi Ashok earned New Zealand central contracts for 2025-26.
Wicketkeeper-batter Mitch Hay, all-rounder Muhammad Abbas, pacer Zak Foulkes, and leg-spinner Adi Ashok are the new faces who have earned New Zealand central contracts for the 2025-26 season.
Ish Sodhi, Ajaz Patel, Tim Southee, and Josh Clarkson, all of whom held central contracts in 2024-25, were not offered contracts this year.
Kane Williamson, Devon Conway, Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, and Lockie Ferguson have not accepted central contracts with New Zealand Cricket, with 'discussions on their casual playing contracts" ongoing.
Hay, a 24-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, scored an unbeaten 99 off 78 balls to anchor New Zealand's ODI innings against Pakistan earlier this year and set a world record with six dismissals in a T20I during his debut tour of Sri Lanka in November.
Twenty-one-year-old Wellington all-rounder Abbas hit a record-breaking 52 off 26 balls on his ODI debut against Pakistan in March, achieving the fastest fifty on debut in men's ODIs. He also showcased his left-arm pace bowling in the same match, claiming Mohammad Rizwan as his maiden ODI wicket.
Foulkes, 22, made his T20I debut for New Zealand against Pakistan last year, replacing the injured Adam Milne and impressing with his all-round skills. He made his ODI debut in November.
Auckland leg-spinner Ashok, 22, completes the list of newcomers, returning to the BlackCaps ODI squad earlier this year after making his debut in 2023, and most recently starring with a five-wicket haul in New Zealand A's win over Bangladesh A in Sylhet.
NZC Chief Executive Scott Weenink praised the new additions, highlighting the promising future of New Zealand cricket. He said, 'The contracts with Mitch, Muhammad, Adi, and Zak reflect the incredible talent coming through our system. These players have shown they can compete at the highest level, and their hunger to represent the BlackCaps is exciting. We're thrilled to see this group drive our team forward."
A statistical review of domestic and international performances across Test, ODI, and T20I formats informed the rankings, with the final 20 players selected based on past performances, the 2025-26 schedule, and their likelihood of representing New Zealand.

Rob Walter named as new New Zealand all-format coach

Former South Africa coach Rob Walter has been named as New Zealand's new coach, across all three formats of the game. The 49-year-old South African takes up the Black Caps job from the middle of June, and will lead the side on their upcoming tour of Zimbabwe. Walter was an early favourite for the job, after he quit his South African post leading their one-day and T20 sides in April. It was revealed Walter never stopped living in New Zealand during his time with South Africa, commuting from his home in Hawke's Bay, where he lives with wife Heather and their two sons. 'The Black Caps have been a successful and highly-regarded team on the world scene for some time now and it's a real privilege to be given the chance to add to that,' Walter said. 'It's an amazing opportunity to work with such a talented group of players and support staff through a period of time in which so many global events, as well as massive bilateral series, will be contested.' Walter's contract means he will lead the Black Caps to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, as well as three major ICC tournaments, including the 2027 World Cup. NZ Cricket chief executive Scott Weenink said Walter was a world-class coach with outstanding pedigree. 'His success in New Zealand's domestic game, combined with his recent achievements on the global stage with South Africa, makes him the ideal candidate to lead the Black Caps.' Walter previously coached Otago Volts in New Zealand's domestic competitions from 2016 until 2021, before moving to Hawke's Bay and briefly coaching Central Stags. In January 2023, he took up the job as South Africa's head coach in white-ball formats, leading South Africa to the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup, and semifinals of the 2023 World Cup, and the 2025 Champions Trophy. He replaces Gary Stead, New Zealand's most successful coach, who leaves his role at the end of the month. Stead hoped to stay on as the Black Caps' Test coach, but New Zealand Cricket opted for one coach across all three formats. He won the World Test Championship in 2021, and made three white-ball finals during his seven-year tenure.

All-rounder Tryon wins ICC Women's Player of the Month award for May 2025

New Delhi: South Africa all-rounder Chloe Tryon has been adjudged as the winner of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women's Player of the Month award for May 2025. Chloe beat out stiff competition from West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews and India batter Jemimah Rodrigues to secure the monthly award. Though South Africa didn't enter the final of the ODI tri-series in Sri Lanka, Chloe had a productive month. Though South Africa had a 23-run loss to eventual champions India, Chloe was in fine nick to hit 67 off 43 balls, comprising four boundaries and five sixes, apart from recording figures of 1-46 and taking the prized wicket of Smriti Mandhana. But Chloe saved her best for last as she was at her dominant best for South Africa in their final tri-series game against hosts Sri Lanka. Batting first, Chloe smashed 74 off 51 deliveries, including four fours and five sixes, as South Africa posted a huge 315. Chloe would follow it up by picking her maiden five-wicket-haul – 5-34 off her eight overs as she tore through the Sri Lanka batting order, including taking a stunning hat-trick and guiding South Africa to a 76-run victory at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo. 'I am really happy with my five-wicket effort and the hat-trick. I was pretty tired most of the time, but I'm happy to have achieved that. You always want to add those milestones to your memories as a cricketer.' 'I'm glad I finally got to tick that off my list. It's still a bit of a blur, to be honest. I think the team carried me throughout that day. I was a little bit sick, so that didn't really help much. But everything came together, and I'm just really happy that I could perform and help the team win,' said Chloe in an ICC statement. The all-rounder is now aiming to build on a consistent set of performances from Sri Lanka when South Africa go on a white-ball tour of the West Indies, starting later this month, and later play the 2025 ODI World Cup in India. 'I probably didn't expect this award, but I see it as a great achievement. I've been trying to find consistency for a while, so I'm happy that it finally came together in Sri Lanka. Hopefully, I can build on those performances and help the team through the big year ahead. We've got a World Cup at the end of the year, so I'm hoping to continue being consistent for the team,' she concluded.
