PH Air Force receives 5 new Black Hawk choppers
The Philippine Air Force (PAF) formally received five newly acquired S-70i Black Hawk helicopters from Poland during turnover ceremonies at Clark Air Base in Mabalacat City, Pampanga on Wednesday.
In a statement, the PAF said the five choppers arrived in the Philippines on July 15.
These aircraft are part of the 32-unit acquisition under a direct contract with Poland's PZL Mielec through the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Modernization Program.
According to the PAF, the first batch of five helicopters arrived on June 10 last year followed by another five on December 9.
The PAF said the S-70i Black Hawk helicopters are known for their versatility, speed, and reliability in a wide range of missions.
These new assets will boost the capacity of the PAF in humanitarian assistance and disaster response operations, troop and cargo transport, and other missions critical to national security and development, according to the military.
'These helicopters will be operated and maintained by the 205th Tactical Helicopter Wing under the Air Mobility Command,' PAF said.
To ensure compliance with operational standards and specifications, the military noted that each delivery underwent a stringent Technical Inspection and Acceptance (TIA) process conducted by the Department of National Defense, AFP, and PAF.

Proposed defense budget up 14%; P40 billion for AFP modernization

Photo: Philippine Air Force The defense sector has received a total of P430.87 billion in the proposed 2026 national budget, almost 14% higher than its P378.89 billion actual budget in 2025, the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) said. Under the National Expenditure Program (NEP) FY 2026, the DBM said most of the amount is intended for the defense programs of the land, air, and naval forces to boost the country's capabilities. A total of P40 billion budget is also set for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Revised Modernization Program. 'The Defense sector will receive Php 430.87 billion, reflecting a Php 51.98 billion or 13.72 percent increase from the FY 2025 GAA level to strengthen our defense capabilities, mostly for the Land (Php 116.31 billion), Air (Php 54.10 billion), and Naval (Php 53.73 billion) Forces Defense Programs of the AFP, including provision for the Revised AFP Modernization Program (Php 40.00 billion),' the DBM said. The DBM on Wednesday submitted the P6.793-trillion NEP to the House of Representatives. President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. last week said the Philippines is in the process of procuring more BrahMos missiles from India. ''The Philippines is in the midst of modernization of our military and so we are looking to see what's most suitable for our defensive needs. Let me be clear, we are not gearing up for war, we are simply reacting to the challenges that we are facing,'' he said. On Wednesday, a Chinese fighter jet intercepted and conducted dangerous maneuvers against a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) aircraft near Bajo de Masinloc. On Monday, several Chinese vessels also harassed Philippine vessels by using a water cannon, performing dangerous maneuvers, and shadowing. Tensions continue as Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea, a conduit for more than $3 trillion of annual shipborne commerce, including parts claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei. Parts of the South China Sea that fall within Philippine territory have been renamed by the government as West Philippine Sea to reinforce the country's claim. The West Philippine Sea refers to the maritime areas on the western side of the Philippine archipelago including Luzon Sea and the waters around, within and adjacent to the Kalayaan Island Group and Bajo de Masinloc. In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague ruled in favor of the Philippines over China's claims in the South China Sea, saying that it had "no legal basis." China has refused to recognize the decision. — BM, GMA Integrated News

Tesla approves share award worth $29 billion to CEO Elon Musk
The new award is designed to gradually boost Musk's voting power, something he and shareholders have consistently said was key to keeping him focused on Tesla's mission. REUTERS/ Gonzalo Fuentes/ File photo Tesla has granted 96 million new shares worth about $29 billion to CEO Elon Musk, a move aimed at keeping the billionaire entrepreneur at the helm as he fights a court ruling that voided his original pay deal for being unfair to shareholders. In 2024, a Delaware court voided Musk's 2018 compensation package, valued at over $50 billion, citing that the Tesla board's approval process was flawed and unfair to shareholders. Musk kicked off an appeal in March against the order, claiming a lower court judge made multiple legal errors in rescinding the record compensation. Earlier this year, Tesla said its board had formed a special committee to consider some compensation matters involving Musk, without disclosing details. Tesla is at a turning point as Musk, its largest shareholder with a 13% stake, shifts focus from a promised affordable EV platform to robotaxis and humanoid robots, positioning the company more as an AI and robotics firm than an automaker. The new award is designed to gradually boost Musk's voting power, something he and shareholders have consistently said was key to keeping him focused on Tesla's mission, the special committee said in the filing. "While we recognize Elon's business ventures, interests and other potential demands on his time and attention are extensive and are confident that this award will incentivize Elon to remain at Tesla," the committee said in a regulatory filing on Monday. It added that if the Delaware courts fully reinstate the 2018 CEO Performance Award, the new interim grant will either be forfeited or offset and there will be no "double dip," it added. The interim award shares vest only if Musk remains in a key executive role through 2027. They also come with a five-year holding period except to cover tax payments or the purchase price. Musk must pay Tesla $23.34 per share of restricted stock that vests, which is equal to the exercise price per share of the 2018 CEO Award, the company said in Monday's filing. Tesla shares rose more than 2% in premarket trading. Falling sales The stock has lost about a quarter of its value so far this year as the company grapples with a decline in sales wrought by its aging vehicle line-up, tough competition and Musk's political stances that have alienated some potential buyers. The challenges have been worsened by US government cuts in support for EVs, with Musk saying at a post-earnings call last month that the waning subsidies could lead to a "few rough quarters" for the company before a wave of revenue from self-driving software and services begins late next year. Data from research firm S&P Global Mobility shared exclusively with Reuters on Monday showed that Tesla's brand loyalty had plunged since Musk endorsed US President Donald Trump last summer. Tesla's aging lineup also faces stiffer competition from an array of EVs from legacy automakers, including General Motors, Hyundai and BMW. Cybertruck, the only new model Tesla has released since 2020, has proved to be a flop despite Musk's prediction of hundreds of thousands of annual sales. — Reuters
