
Helicopter team rescues gold prospector Kye Martin in WA outback 48 hours after going missing
Kye Martin,40 was located on Sunday after his family reported him missing during a gold prospecting trip near Ora Banda, 622km from Perth.
He contacted them on Friday, telling them that he was lost and was losing phone reception.
Martin's family reported him missing on Saturday.
A large-scale search co-ordinated by Kalgoorlie Police and the WA Police Emergency Operations Unit, deployed a number of police resources to the remote area, in addition to specialist Tactical Response Group trackers and s Police Air Wing dispatched from Perth.
Police confirmed Martin was 'located safe and well' in the goldfields about 12pm on Sunday.
Martin was spotted via a makeshift shelter and his name marked out on the ground in a clearing.
Martin was flown by helicopter to Kalgoorlie Airport where he was assessed by St John WA paramedics and later reunited with friends and family.
Police urge people travelling to remote areas to take precautionary measures and be well prepared for their journey.
'The Western Australian outback is made up of many different terrains which can be challenging to survive in,' police said.
Police urge travellers to:
• Research road and weather conditions and wearing appropriate clothing;
• Be familiar with the area you are intending to explore;
• Carry enough food, water and supplies;
• Carry a personal locator beacon and satellite phone, which can help emergency services locate you;
• Share travel plans with other people, including intended location and expected times of return.
