AI adoption rises but IT leaders still worry about security risks

A recent study has shown that most IT leaders worldwide are concerned about the adoption of artificial intelligence within their organisations.
The 2025 Celonis AI Process Optimisation Report, based on a survey of 1,620 business leaders from various global regions including Australia and the broader Asia-Pacific (APAC), highlights that 90% of IT leaders hold reservations regarding the expanding use of AI.
The survey participants were drawn from companies with a minimum revenue of USD $500 million, and 80% of these companies reported revenue ranging between USD $2 billion and USD $10 billion.
Security and data breaches emerged as the primary concern, with 45% of IT leaders identifying these risks as their top issue regarding AI adoption. Pressure to demonstrate a return on investment and a widening skills gap followed closely, with each cited by 37% of respondents as key challenges. Additionally, almost one third of the business leaders surveyed indicated that the expectations placed on AI technologies are frequently unrealistic.
The report also noted a range of sectors represented in the study: 25% of respondents worked in IT, with equal proportions from Supply Chain, Finance/Shared Services, and Operations/Process Improvement sectors. Despite widespread adoption of AI, the research suggests there is limited focus among leaders on the foundational business processes required for successful AI integration. "Process shortcomings ranked surprisingly low, which suggests many IT leaders may not yet recognise how critical optimised processes are to effective AI deployment. Issues like data quality and system inefficiencies, which are key drivers of AI failure, can often be solved through process intelligence," said Pascal Coubard, APAC Lead at Celonis.
In the Supply Chain sector, the report found that AI has already been employed for automated inventory management by 55% and for warehouse automation by 49% of respondents.
However, only 40% are currently using AI for transport network and route planning. The study indicates this is set to change, with 96% of supply chain leaders planning to adopt AI in these areas within the next 12 months as part of an expanded investment in technological automation.
Finance and Shared Services leaders appear optimistic about the future of AI in their field. The report revealed that 70% of leaders in these areas have a mandate to invest in AI to improve efficiency. At present, 54% are using AI to automate routine tasks, with increasing interest in applications such as fraud detection, cash flow optimisation, and regulatory compliance.
The majority anticipate full-scale adoption, with at least 90% expecting to have deployed AI in every major use case by the middle of 2026.
Within Process Improvement and Operations, the trend towards automation continues.
More than half of the leaders in this sector said they are already employing AI for continuous improvement and process automation initiatives. Even in areas reporting lower current adoption, such as identifying new optimisation opportunities, most intend to expand their use of AI over the coming year. Nearly 90% of these leaders expect intelligent automation to deliver the greatest business value in the next five years. "AI is no longer experimental. It's being embedded into the fabric of the way businesses operate," Coubard added. "But to fully realise its potential, companies must feed AI with the process knowledge and business context provided by process intelligence. Otherwise, they risk automating inefficiency and missing the opportunity entirely. And when processes work, AI works."
The findings suggest that while adoption of AI is increasing, concerns among IT leaders and the need for a greater focus on underlying business processes remain significant factors in shaping the future role of AI in large enterprises.

Air New Zealand is working with the organisation behind ChatGPT to expand the use of artificial intelligence to help the airline avoid flight delays. The national carrier was part of a select group around the world given the opportunity to partner with OpenAI, in a first of its kind collaboration in New Zealand. Air New Zealand chief digital officer Nikhil Ravishankar told RNZ's Morning Report programme today the partnership enabled Air New Zealand to roll companion AI out to its corporate workers at pace. It also allowed the airline to "co-create" solutions, Ravishankar said. "So we already have about 1500, what we call, custom GPTs in the organisation. Think of them as sort of rudimentary agents and what Open AI partnership allows us to do is work with their engineering teams and product teams to develop these solutions to solve airline problems, not just for Air New Zealand. "We're hoping that the solutions are also applicable around the world." It also allowed Air New Zealand to become a "test bed" for some of Open AI's more cutting-edge solutions, he said. "So we get first access, early access to some of these tools as they emerge and some of these tools are turning up on almost a weekly basis." The aim was to make Air New Zealand a better airline. Ravishankar said the airline expected to see improvements in on-time performance, integrated planning and how the airline scheduled the network it flies, and service experience for customers including product design in-flight and on the ground. "So almost every aspect of the customer's experience with the airline will be impacted by AI and this partnership going forward." Asked about pricing, Ravishankar said Air New Zealand was already using AI to deal with the cost of flying, which he said was complex. "The hope really is we want it to be a force for good so we are looking at utilising AI to drive more, fairer value-centric outcomes as much as anything else." Asked what this meant, Ravishankar said AI allowed the airline to take into account "a lot more things as we think about how we price an airline seat". "For our regional network for example where we are a lifeline service, we could think of pricing approaches that fulfil that role that we play, versus what we might be doing in say the US market where we're trying to attract premium leisure tourists into the country."

Accenture has completed the acquisition of Aristal, a Malaysia-based consultancy with expertise in financial services and digital transformation, in an effort to broaden its capabilities across Southeast Asia. This acquisition represents Accenture's first banking-focused purchase in Malaysia and is part of a wider programme to expand its presence in the region's financial services sector. Regional pressure Banks and financial institutions across the Asia-Pacific, including New Zealand, are facing increasing challenges to modernise legacy systems and increase digital adoption, partly in response to changing economic conditions at both the regional and global levels. Founded in 2006, Aristal has provided advisory services in core banking transformation and has led significant IT and business change initiatives for financial institutions in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. Its expertise spans system migrations, regulatory compliance, and post-merger integrations, challenges that many banks in Southeast Asia are actively addressing. "With deep expertise in core banking systems, Aristal has helped banks upgrade outdated platforms, improve operations, and deliver better customer experiences - capabilities that will strengthen Accenture's financial services offerings," said Paul Ng, Financial Services Lead, Southeast Asia at Accenture. "Their experience implementing core banking platforms, designing operating models, and supporting post-merger integration will enhance our ability to help banks across Southeast Asia transform faster and operate more efficiently." Following the acquisition, Aristal's team of 30 professionals will join Accenture's Financial Services practice in Malaysia. According to both companies, the integration of Aristal's industry experience with Accenture's broader technology and managed services portfolio should enable more comprehensive delivery of transformation projects for banks in the region. Market trends The global core banking market is expected to reach USD $28.8 billion by 2027, and financial institutions in Southeast Asia are advancing their efforts to replace ageing technology and enhance digital offerings. New Zealand's banks, subject to scrutiny over ageing infrastructure and the quality of digital services, are observing such developments as a reminder of the necessity for ongoing investment in updating core systems. "This acquisition expands our pool of experienced professionals in Malaysia and strengthens our ability to support clients driving core banking transformation," said Azwan Baharuddin, Country Managing Director for Accenture in Malaysia. "It reflects our commitment to developing local talent and helping clients harness the power of technology, data, and AI to reinvent how they operate, compete, and grow in an increasingly dynamic banking landscape." Lin Kok Liong, Managing Director of Aristal, commented on the wider opportunities the deal presents for Aristal staff and clients alike. "Joining Accenture opens up tremendous opportunities for our team here in Malaysia to grow and contribute on a larger stage. Strategic moves The acquisition follows other strategic decisions by Accenture in Southeast Asia, including purchasing Singapore-based Percipient's digital twin banking technology and launching the AI Refinery Engineering Hub, with an aim of supporting digital transformation on a large scale for financial services providers.
