Verizon boosts annual profit forecast on demand for premium plans

Yahoo12 hours ago
(Reuters) -Verizon raised the lower end of its annual profit forecast on Monday, as strong demand for its higher-tier plans powered better-than-expected earnings in the second quarter.
The U.S. telecom major posted a 2.2% rise in wireless service revenue as more users opted for its add-ons such as access to streaming service like Netflix.
The carrier has launched price-lock promotions and broadband-wireless bundles to retain users as competition intensifies from AT&T and T-Mobile, as well as aggressive offers from broadband providers Comcast and Charter.
However, Verizon posted a surprise drop of 9,000 monthly bill-paying wireless subscribers in the April-June period, reeling from user churn after price hikes in January. Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting an increase of 13,000 subscribers.
To drive growth in the mature U.S. telecom market, Verizon and its wireless rivals have been bulking up on fiber-optic assets that can tap growing data use by customers.
Verizon in May won approval from the U.S. telecom regulator for its $20 billion acquisition of fiber-optic internet provider Frontier, after it agreed to end its diversity programs.
The sharper focus on internet services helped it posted 293,000 broadband net additions in the second quarter.
Overall, Verizon reported revenue of $34.5 billion, beating estimates of $33.74 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Its quarterly adjusted earnings per share of $1.22 also beat estimates.
The company now expects 2025 adjusted profit to grow between 1% and 3%, compared with 0% to 3% previously. It also raised its annual free cash flow forecast to between $19.5 billion and $20.5 billion, from $17.5 billion to $18.5 billion.

British Business Bank returns to profit amid further investments

The Government-owned British Business Bank has returned to a profit as it pushes forward with efforts to support Chancellor Rachel Reeves' ambitious growth plans. The UK's economic development bank recorded a pre-tax profit of £144 million in the year to March, swinging a £122 million loss a year earlier. It is the first profit the bank has delivered since 2022 after the valuation of firms it invested in were impacted by challenging economic conditions. In its latest set of annual accounts, the British Business Bank said its investments and funding activities are expected to have created around 38,000 additional jobs. The bank, which lends money to and buys stakes in smaller UK businesses to help them start and grow, supported £6.8 billion worth of funding agreements during the latest year. It said this included £1.2 billion worth of its public funding, £2.6 billion of guaranteed lending and a further £3 billion of private capital. The return to profitability and increased funding agreements come amid efforts from the Government to accelerate economic growth across the UK. The Government agreed to increase the bank's financial capacity to £25.6 billion in order to help it increase annual investments to around £2.5 billion a year and to gather more third-party capital. Louis Taylor, chief executive of the British Business Bank, said: 'In a busy and productive 2024/25, the British Business Bank amplified its role, delivering significant impact in driving economic growth and innovation and playing its part in the economic transformation of the UK's Nations and regions. 'At the same time, we have undertaken a significant reshaping of our organisation to prepare for an expanded mandate and long-term ambitions. 'Having an economic development bank with permanent capital and a consistent risk appetite, underpinning the UK venture and growth market through its cycles, is a powerful and very positive development.' Stephen Welton, chairman of the organisation, said: 'With a proven track record on a nationwide basis in driving economic growth, innovation and jobs, over the next 10 years we expect the British Business Bank to become a far more visible and recognisable institution, firmly embedded in the national narrative of smaller business growth and success.'

S&P 500 and Nasdaq notch record high closes, lifted by Alphabet

STORY: A fairly muted Monday on Wall Street saw the Dow end essentially flat, the S&P 500 edge up fractionally, and the Nasdaq finish more than a third of a percent higher. Still, the latter two indexes eked out more record high closes, thanks to gains in shares of Alphabet. The Google parent rallied more than 2.5% ahead of its quarterly report on Wednesday. Tesla also reports on Wednesday, with the two tech giants kicking off earnings from the so-called "Magnificent Seven." Analysts on average expect S&P 500 companies to report a 6.7% increase in earnings for the second quarter, with Big Tech driving much of that gain, according to LSEG I/B/E/S. And that has Rob Haworth, senior investment strategy director at U.S. Bank Asset Management Group, bullish on stocks. 'On the market side, we are still glass half full. And that really comes from one; a solid labor market. Two; corporate earnings are looking really fairly solid for the year. And three; inflation, even though it's elevated and may creep a little higher, is not threatening the consumer at this point. So we think this is an economy that can survive, and the markets appear to be doing that as well.'
