Win and each-way betting explained ahead of Cheltenham 2025

Telegraph10-03-2025

Win and each-way bets are the most common types of wager placed on sporting events. This article explains in easy-to-understand terms how both work.
Win betting
Here you are backing a selection – Liverpool to win the league, Galopin Des Champs to win the Gold Cup – to win outright. Any other outcome and your stake will be lost, except for events in which the possible outcomes include a dead heat, when your return will usually be calculated at half the odds.
An example of win betting
Arsenal are 2/1 to beat Barcelona in the Champions League and you fancy them to win. Their price means that, for every £1 you bet, you will win £2. You stake £5 and Arsenal win, so your winnings will be £10 (£5 x 2) and, as your stake is returned when you place a winning bet, your total return is £15.
Win betting and dead heats
You place £5 on Kandoo Kid to win the Grand National at 20/1 and he dead-heats for first with Iroko. Because the bookmakers will be paying out on two winners, they halve the price on both, so 20/1 becomes 10/1 and your winnings will be £50 (£5 x 10), for a total return of £55 including your stake.
What is each-way betting?
Backing an outcome each-way means you place two bets in one on a selection: one for it to win and one for it to finish among a specified number of places. For all events on which each-way betting is possible, bookmakers will state in advance how many places they will pay out on.
The place odds are a fraction of the win odds (usually one-fifth or one-quarter) so each-way betting often appeals if you think your selection will place and has an outside chance of winning, or if it has a sufficiently long price. For example, a 40/1 shot would generally pay 8/1 or 10/1 for placing.
There are three factors to consider when placing an each-way bet: the win odds, the fractional odds for placing and the number of places being paid out. The last may vary from operator to operator and, if the fractional odds are 1/1 or greater, you will not lose money as long as your selection places.
Once you are aware of these, you can tick the each-way (e/w) box after adding your selection to your bet slip and place your each-way bet. Remember that your stake is doubled for an each-way bet.
An example of each-way betting
Kandoo Kid is 20/1 to win the Grand National and you think he will definitely place and may even win. You place £5 each-way on him, a total outlay of £10, with a bookmaker who is paying a quarter of the odds for first, second, third and fourth places. Effectively you are staking £5 at 20/1 on Twain to win and £5 at 5/1 (one-quarter of 20/1) on him to finish in the first four.
This is how the two parts of the bet work:
Win bet: If Twain wins you win £100 (20 x £5) and get your £5 win stake back for a return of £105.
Place bet: If Twain places you win £25 (5 x £5) and get your £5 place stake back for a return of £30.
If your selection wins both the win and place parts of your each-way bet pay a return, here £135.
If your selection places only the place part of the each-way bet pays a return, so £30 in this case.
How many places are paid on an each-way bet?
This can vary between operators but all will advertise the number. Generally, in horse racing betting, there is a minimum number of each-way places based on how many runners there are. However, in events such as golf, bookmakers may enhance the number of places to as many as 10 or 12.
Each-way betting: extra places and enhanced terms
Bookmakers often offer more than the standard number of each-way places or more generous each-way fractions on selected daily races in the form of an existing customer offer.
For specific races such as the Cheltenham Gold Cup or Grand National, bookmakers try to outdo each other by offering extra places, so it is always worth researching who is paying out on the most places.

Erik ten Hag 'tried to cancel disastrous Man Utd transfer' but was ignored

Antony will go down as one of the worst Manchester United transfers in recent memory after failing to justify his £85m price tag - and a recent report has claimed ex-manager Erik ten Hag never wanted him in the first place Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag reportedly tried to stop the club signing Antony for £85million in 2022 despite previously working with the Brazilian at old club Ajax. However, it's claimed the club ignored him because they were worried Arsenal would swoop. Ten Hag bought two players with him from the Amsterdam club when he arrived three years ago, with Antony joining Lisandro Martinez, while fellow Dutchman Tyrell Malacia signing from Feyenoord. Last year he signed his old Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt. ‌ But Antony in particular struggled to repay that huge transfer fee and was heavily criticised over his inconsistent performances. In his first two seasons in the Premier League, he managed five goals and three assists. This season, he failed to start a game in the top flight under Ten Hag before he was sacked in October. ‌ Things didn't improve under his successor Ruben Amorim, who sent him on loan to Real Betis in January and he now looks set to leave the club in the near future after a hugely successful spell with the La Liga side - which just added to questions of whether it was the Brazilian or the culture at Old Trafford that was the issue. Now it's claimed Ten Hag never wanted to bring Antony to United in the first place and attempted to pull the breaks on the transfer, despite previous suggestions he was key to the move happening. The claim also suggests United pushed through with the move after learning Arsenal were set to make an approach for the player - but Ten Hag still supported him and tried to help him during his time at the club. Kees Vos, the co-founder of Ten Hag's agency, wrote in the book ' Liverpool and the Dutch': "Ten Hag and Vos were not in favour of this and wanted to stop the transfer. "But the club wanted to push through at all costs, because Arsenal was also interested in Antony. The risk of a stronger competitor would be great. Ultimately, Manchester United paid almost €100million for Antony. "Although Ten Hag did not support this transfer, it stuck with him throughout his entire time in Manchester that he took over the attacker from Ajax for this ill-fated amount, who was never able to fulfil his promise." ‌ Antony has been a much bigger success in La Liga, where he has scored nine goals and provided two assists and has become a much-loved member of the squad under new boss Manuel Pellegrini. Betis are hoping to sign him permanently this summer and Antony has previously spoken about how he has a smile on his face again after struggling with his mental health at United. In an emotional interview last month, Antony broke down in tears as he revealed he went days without eating and locked himself in his room. ‌ Speaking to TNT Sports Brazil, he said: "(Betis) changed a lot because i needed to find myself, because of everything I went through in my personal life. As I said, I wanted to do things, but they didn't see to work out because I wasn't happy, I didn't feel that desire to play football, and I needed to find myself and be happy again because playing football was always something I loved. "I went through difficult times [at United] when I no longer felt that pleasure. I even always told my brother, I told him that I couldn't take it anymore. [My brother] told me to hold on a little longer, that things were going to change. It even made me emotional, because they were very hard days for me." Arsenal target Benjamin Sesko makes transfer decision amid Saudi Arabia interest in the Bundesliga star

Al-Hilal have made an enquiry about RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko but were informed his preference is to join Arsenal. Sesko has emerged as Arsenal's No 1 transfer target as Mikel Arteta looks to add more firepower to his attack. But their chances of landing the 22-year-old appeared to have taken a hit after Al-Hilal made an approach for the Bundesliga star ahead of the Club World Cup. However, Sesko intends to stay in Europe for now, and has his sights set on a switch to the Emirates instead. Sesko has scored 39 goals in 87 games for Leipzig since joining the German club two years ago. His goalscoring exploits have caught the eye of some of Europe's top teams, including Arsenal. Leipzig only finished seventh in the Bundesliga in 2024-25 and will not be able to offer their star striker Champions League football next season, while the Gunners will be playing in Europe's elite club competition. Al-Hilal now look set to miss out on Sesko, but have also sounded out Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez. The Anfield club value the Uruguay international in excess of £70m, which was the figure Al-Nassr were prepared to offer earlier in the year. Nunez scored just five goals in 30 appearances during Liverpool's title-winning campaign, and could push for a fresh start elsewhere this summer.

Arsenal reignite interest in Newcastle and Chelsea target as asking price slashe

Arsenal are showing an interest in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi again, as the defender heads into the final year of his contract. The 24-year-old was a target for the Gunners 12 months ago, along with a number of other clubs including Newcastle, Liverpool and his former team Chelsea. The Eagles stuck firm to their lofty asking price of £70m and no deal was done, with Guehi staying put and going on to win the FA Cup with Palace. However, the England international's contract at Selhurst Park expires next year so his price tag will be significantly lower this summer. The Mirror report that with Guehi now much more affordable than a year ago, Arsenal's interest has been reignited, although their pursuit of him will not be straightforward. Not only will there be plenty of competition again from their Premier League rivals, but the 23-cap England international may take some convincing to move to the Emirates. Mikel Arteta has established a very reliable partnership at centre-back in Gabriel and William Saliba, one that will not easily be broken. Gabriel signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal earlier this month and the club is working on Saliba doing the same. There is interest from Real Madrid in the Frenchman and the Gunners are very keen to keep hold of the impressive centre-back. That puts in question their interest in Guehi as he will not want to move to any club where he would not be a guaranteed starter. The Athletic report that Arteta wants genuine competition to his first-choice central defenders and Arsenal made a move for Bournemouth's Dean Huijsen before he made his £50m transfer to Real Madrid. Newcastle made three bids for Guehi last summer, going as high as £60m, but could not convince Palace to sell. With a return to the Champions League, the Magpies could come back with another offer as he is now likely available for less than they bid in 2024. Joined from Chelsea in July 2021 for £18m Appearances: 155 Goals: 8 Trophies: 2024/25 FA Cup Guehi has offered little on his future, saying before Palace beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final: 'My only focus is this game. 'My only focus is the fact that I am under contract at Palace. So as far as I am concerned, I am a Palace player.' Last month The Sun reported that Guehi may choose to run down his contract at Crystal Palace and see his options expand further when he will be available on a free transfer next summer. Real Madrid and Barcelona have been touted as possible destinations for the defender if he were to leave Selhurst Park on a free. MORE: When does the transfer window reopen and why has it closed?
