Simon Thomas says following Jeff Stelling was ‘like replacing Fergie at United'
Thomas took over from the hugely popular Stelling for the start of the 2023-24 season when the veteran broadcaster stepped away from fronting the Saturday afternoon results show after over 25 years in the chair.
Thomas, who took a break from presenting following the death of his wife in 2017, initially wanted to turn the job down, fearing he would have an 'impossible job', much like Moyes did at Old Trafford when he took over from the Scot in 2013.

'It was a little bit like replacing Fergie at United,' the 52-year-old told ainslie + ainslie Performance People podcast. 'You almost want to be the one after David Moyes.
'I'll be really honest, I wanted to say no initially because I thought this is the impossible job. I remember when he announced he was leaving, everyone was saying good luck to whoever replaces him.
'But how can you turn it down?'
Thomas, who admitted he struggled with anxiety when returning to work following his wife's death, fronted a rebrand of Soccer Saturday and admits he struggled in his first season.
'When I came to do Soccer Saturday, I knew I was in a better place but I'd say a lot of the first season I had a real struggle,' he said.
'There was a period when I thought 'have I made a massive mistake here?'.
'It's hard enough replacing Jeff, it's massively hard taking on a show that's six hours long and on a busy week you're keeping across 71 games over six hours.
'It screws with your head and I did struggle a lot with it. I had to ride the storm and say this first season is going to be hard, I'm going to have to ignore all people that say 'it's rubbish now Jeff's gone' and 'he's not as good as Jeff, he's not funny, he's not this'.'

Steak 'that looks like Scotland' goes viral after Scot shares photo
'Bit dry to be Scotland,' one viewer joked A Scot has gone viral online for their unusually shaped steak. The piece of meat appears to resemble Scotland. Scotland is famed for its thriving culinary scene. People all over the world flock to the country for its various Michelin-starred restaurants and hidden gem eateries. However, it is not every day that you come across food that looks like Scotland itself. That is exactly what happened to one individual who sat down to eat a steak, though. On Tuesday, June 11, one person took to social media to share an image of their steak. Writing on the Scotland community on Reddit, they wrote: "Cooked a steak that looks like Scotland." As can be seen in the image, the steak does in fact appear to bear a resemblance to the shape of Scotland. The meat resembles the irregular and jagged landmass of the country, with certain parts of it vaguely resembling the Highlands, Aberdeenshire, and Dumfries and Galloway on a map. Since being shared, the photo has received more than 2,000 'upvotes'. The post has also been commented on more than 220 times, with many Scots keen to share their thoughts on the steak. Some Reddit users were quick to comment on the appearance of the steak, with many stating that they believed it to be overdone. One even went to so far as to say it was "nuked". One comment reads: "It'd be easier to chew through Hadrian's Wall than that thing." "It is spelt nuked," a second stated, while another Reddit user said: "No, you ruined a steak until it looked like Scotland." A fourth posted: "Is that my shoe sole? Steak looks drier than the Sahara." Meanwhile, a few joked that the meat looked too "dry" to be Scotland. One wrote: "Definitely not Scotland. Scotland will never be this dry." "Scotland is nowhere near that dry," a second echoed, while a third joked: "Bit dry to be Scotland." One user joked about the shape of the steak, asking: "Where's Shetland?" In response, somebody else replied: "It still burns in the pan." Elsewhere, another posted: "Edinburgh looks a bit burnt." As reported by the Daily Record, Reddit users recently shared their picks for the "best single malt Scotch". Whiskies from distilleries such as Balvenie and Glenfarclas were among those named. We also reported on a simple 65p kitchen ingredient that can help make steak taste like it is from a restaurant. The addition of the ingredient is said to enhance the flavour of the meat as a result of a process that occurs when it is used. More information about the steak that looks like Scotland can be found on the Reddit post.

Premier League trio in Jadon Sancho transfer battle as Man Utd make decision
Jadon Sancho remains likely to leave Manchester United this summer after failing to secure a transfer to Chelsea and Premier League clubs are monitoring his situation at Old Trafford Jadon Sancho is commanding interest from three Premier League clubs and looks set to be on the move once again this summer. Ruben Amorim has decided the England international will not be part of his first team squad and is said to have no plans to integrate him into the set-up. Chelsea made their decision to not make Sancho's move permanent official as they named their Club World Cup squad on Wednesday. The Blues were forced to stump up £5million to send the winger back to United after they had satisfied condititions to make the deal permanent. Aston Villa, Tottenham and Newcastle are all keeping tabs on the 25-year-old's situation as the Red Devils look to facilitate an exit. Unai Emery's side prefer a loan deal for the ex-Borussia Dortmund star, having taken Marcus Rashford on a temporary basis in January. United would prefer a sale to bolster their funds amidst a busy summer of rebuilding, as they attempt to replenish Amorim's squad. Already the club have spent £62.5m on Matheus Cunha and a significant fee is expected to land Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. Sancho would see a return to Champions League action if a move to Newcastle or Tottenham was completed. It is claimed the sides both see Sancho as 'a strong option' as they attempt to build squads to battle on multiple fronts in 2025/26. READ MORE: Jonny Evans makes surprise announcement on future after being released by Man Utd The former Borussia Dortmund star, who has also drawn interest from his former club, enjoyed a steady if unspectacular loan at Chelsea last term. Sancho made 45 appearances as he helped Chelsea win the UEFA Conference League and qualify for the Champions League. But his five goals and 10 assists were not enough to convince Enzo Maresca's side to extend his stay. The player, who arrived at Old Trafford at United from Dortmund in a £73m deal, is also finding interest from Europe however. Dortmund have asked to be kept up to date on any developments over his future. And Chelsea's interest in Jamie Gittens could prompt some action, though the German side have already signed Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland this summer. Gittens is said to have already agreed terms with Chelsea, but the Blues could not make a deal with the Bundesliga giants in time for the Club World Cup. It remains to be seen if they return with another offer. Sancho's salary could prove problematic as United attempt to offload their unwanted star. It means another loan could be considered for the attacker, who has already enjoyed two spells away from the club.

Transfer news LIVE: Liverpool in for Barcola EXCLUSIVE, Chelsea urged to sign Guehi, Prem clubs queue for Sancho
'Blackmail and insults won't work' Sporting's president has furiously hit back at Manchester United target Victor Gyokeres saying: 'Threats and blackmail don't work,' writes MARTIN BLACKBURN. The Sweden striker is considering going on strike to force through a dream move to United or Arsenal. Gyokeres, 27, is furious with Sporting for going back on their word over a transfer promise to him and plans not to play for the club again. He believes he had a gentleman's agreement to leave the Portuguese giants for £50million with a further £8million in add-ons but that claim has been rubbished by president Frederico Varandas. And the Sporting chief insists he will not be bullied into letting the ex-Coventry forward move to the Prem on the cheap this summer. Varandas said: 'Sporting will not accept blackmail and insults – you should know me better by now. 'One thing is certain, we will not accept £50m plus £8m. As of now, Sporting has not received any bids for Gyokeres. 'He is a fantastic professional, to this day he has had zero offers. He has a three-year contract with Sporting.'
