Texas Longhorns football most valuable program in the nation

The Texas Longhorns have the most valuable program in college football. That's according to a new report from the Athletic. Of course, college football programs aren't for sale. But as private equity firms get more involved in college football, the Athletic considered a future where programs are commodities like professional sports teams. "We approached the hypothetical question with a methodology that was part art, part science. We used real-life pro transactions to gauge purchase prices relative to a team's revenue over the past three available years of data. NFL and NBA sales guided our ratios in the SEC and Big Ten, while the MLB and NHL were our rough benchmarks in the ACC and Big 12. For each school in a Power 4 conference (plus Notre Dame), we factored in everything from prestige and championships to facility renovations, population trends and realignment scenarios." - The Athletic on its methodology The formula has put Texas as the No. 1 most valuable program in the nation. 16 of the top 17 are in either the SEC or Big Ten. The lone exception is understandably Notre Dame. "The Longhorns routinely lead the country in revenue and were the only team to top $200 million in the most recent financial reports. No program came within $25 million of Texas in either of the past two years. The Longhorns haven't won a national title since 2005 but made the College Football Playoff semifinals each of the past two seasons and are among this preseason's top championship contenders. Add in the SEC brand, and Texas looks like the safest investment. Our price tag makes the Longhorns comparable to the 2018 sale of the Carolina Panthers (almost $2.3 billion)." - The Athletic on why Texas has the top valuation Texas routinely leads the nation in revenue. UT is in the SEC and has a very recognizable logo, uniforms and brands. The Horns also sit in the largest city in America without a major professional team and sits in a hot bed of high school football and recruiting. The 40 Acres are only 100 miles away from the most valuable sports team in the world, the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys are valued by Forbes at $10.1 billion dollars. Texas is estimated at about a quarter of that valuation. The Lone Star state loves its football. Racist abuse of Jess Carter ‘ridiculous' and ‘disgusting', says England coach Wiegman

Sarina Wiegman has described the racial abuse suffered by Jess Carter as 'ridiculous' and 'disgusting' ahead of England's European Championship semi-final against Italy on Tuesday. Carter revealed on social media on Sunday that from the start of the tournament, she has 'experienced a lot of racial abuse' and hopes raising the issue 'will make the people writing this abuse think twice so others don't have to deal with it'. Advertisement England will not take the knee before kick-off of their last-four clash in Geneva, Switzerland as a mark of solidarity with their team-mate and instead will stay standing. 'It's really sad that we have to be occupied by this,' said Wiegman in England's pre-match press conference on Monday. 'It is ridiculous and disgusting what is happening and that goes beyond football. We had to pay attention to that and support Jess. Of course, she's not the only one who gets this abuse or racism. That's why she wanted to address it and she's fully supported by the team.' When asked how she balances not giving in to the trolls and potentially protecting Carter by not playing her, Wiegman said: 'We had conversations, and although it's a hard situation, Jess is a very strong person. She wants to move on too, but she also felt, and so did we, that we have to address this, we can't just let it go. 'We're ready to perform, she's ready to perform and compete. That also says a lot about her and the team.' Midfielder Georgia Stanway said the squad have been brought closer together and explained they have decided not to take a knee before kick-off because 'we want more action' on racism. 'We want to create more of a talking point and a point to make more change,' she said. 'We felt like the knee was just a little bit repetitive, it's come to a point where the knee isn't doing what we wanted it to do.' Stanway also said it has not changed how she feels about putting on the England shirt because the abusers are not 'fans'. 'We know that we're wearing it for the people we stand next to, our families, the actual fans that are here to watch the game,' she said. 'I say it with power because I really believe it. I believe that people like that don't deserve to be called fans.' Meanwhile Italy manager Andrea Sonicin and defender Cecilia Salvai said they have the 'greatest solidarity' with Carter. Advertisement 'I hope she can play the game and can detach a bit from that episode tomorrow,' said Salvai. 'Of course she is not the first one and we have the greatest solidarity with her.' Soncin added: 'It should not be tolerated. We have a responsibility with the position we are in to send the right messages, we need to give educational messages, including to children. It is a cultural campaign and battle. I don't know if taking the knee is enough but we are ready to take part in any campaign to help this.' There will be a meeting tonight to discuss any alternative pre-game gesture to the knee. Salvai said the players are 'open' and 'willing' to do whatever is needed to 'give a strong message'.

Former Georgia guard Tate Ratledge signs $7.6M rookie contract

The Detroit Lions and former Georgia Bulldogs right guard Tate Ratledge finally agreed on the terms on his rookie contract. The official details aren't out yet, but Ratledge is expected to make $7,652,736 through four years, according to Spotrac. The first two years of it will be 100% guaranteed, while the third year includes 66% guaranteed salary, according to Ben Levine of Trade Rumors. Ratledge was drafted by Detroit with the 57th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft after spending four years holding down Georgia's right side. Ratledge immense size (6-foot-6, 320 pounds) and speed (4.97 40-yard dash (100th percentile) and 7.38 cone drill (96th percentile)) made him a terror for opposing defensive lineman. Ratledge earned AP All-American Third-Team distinction in 2024 and AP All-American Second-Team in 2023. He's also dependably healthy, as other than an ankle injury suffered in Week 3 of the 2024 season, he hasn't sustained many significant injuries. With incumbent center Frank Ragnow retiring over the 2025 offseason, Ratledge has an easy route to earn starting time off the bat. He's already gotten looks as the starting center during training camp and with Pro Bowlers Penei Sewell and Taylor Decker flanking both tackle spots, Ratledge will be eased into the position. In normal circumstances, his rookie deal would have been ironed out by now. However, when the Texans signed Iowa State wide receiver Jayden Higgins to a fully-guaranteed contract, it caused an unprecedented standoff between NFL teams and second-round picks, as each one of them were looking for more guaranteed money than previous years, if not a fully guaranteed contract.
