Darts star who upset Nathan Aspinall could still have been banned for World Matchplay
Wessel Nijman caused a major upset by beating Nathan Aspinall in the first round of the World Matchplay, but the Dutchman was once at risk of missing the tournament altogether Darts sensation Wessel Nijman has made a triumphant debut at the World Matchplay and secured a spot in the second round after being sidelined for more than two years. The Dutch ace was initially handed a five-year suspension back in October 2020 after confessing to violations of betting and anti-corruption regulations. His ban was cut in half following his involvement in anti-corruption education and activities. Nijman, 25, celebrated a significant win over Nathan Aspinall in the first round of the World Matchplay on Saturday, surging to a 10-6 win against the world No. 7. He is now set to take on James Wade at the Winter Gardens come Tuesday. But Nijman's career once hit a serious snag after he was implicated in a match-fixing and betting scandal. The controversy stemmed from his 4-0 defeat to David Evans during the Modus Icons of Darts series in May 2020. According to The Sun, Nijman conceded to fixing the match, agreeing to lose every leg for a sum of £8,300 after being approached by an intermediary. The Darts Regulation Authority slapped him with a five-year ban, retroactive to August 2020, but Nijman served only half that period due to his proactive engagement with player education and anti-corruption initiatives. Upon the announcement of the ban, he reflected on his wrongdoing. "While it is clear that I was put under external pressure, ultimately I agreed to do this and take full responsibility for my actions," he said at the time. "I hope any other player who finds themselves in a similar position will learn from my mistakes and follow the correct procedure to help protect their own integrity and the integrity of darts as a sport. Unfortunately, I did not do that and made a stupid mistake that I am rightly being punished for." Nijman, who worked as an electrician during his suspension, was permitted to return to competition in February 2023. He excelled on the PDC Development Tour and booked his place at the PDC World Championship, as well as obtaining a PDC Tour card. In October 2024, Nijman claimed his maiden senior PDC crown by beating Stephen Bunting 8-5 in the final at Players Championship 24. After the landmark win, the world No. 42 said: "I've felt like it was coming. I thought, 'Be patient and it will come.' "It's probably the best months of my darting career. When I was playing the Development Tour last year I wasn't expecting to get a tour card. I knew I could win it when I was in the final. My goal was to get in the top 64 after two years; I'll probably get into it after one year so I'm very happy with that." Nevertheless, if the World Matchplay newcomer continues his progress in the competition, he could be in prime position to fly up the rankings, reports the Daily Express. There was an even more shocking result elsewhere as former world champion Luke Humphries was knocked out in the opening round. Nijman expressed to Sky Sports that his victory over Aspinall might just be the pinnacle of his career so far: "I think so. I won one game at Ally Pally, but this is probably more special than playing at Ally Pally, especially with the way I played. "I'm very happy with the way I played and very happy with the win. I didn't feel too nervy. I played like myself. I'm just happy to be here. Now I've got to see it match by match."

Gary Anderson calls out 'boring' darts rivals glued to their phones and pines for return of former world champion
The Flying Scotsman dispatched Luke Woodhouse 10-5 at the World Matchplay then called out Gen Z stars for lacking banter Unimpressed Gary Anderson reckons the new age of darts stars are "boring" and lack the banter of the stars from yesteryear. The Flying Scotsman dispatched Luke Woodhouse 10-5 at the World Matchplay and then turned on the next generation as he called on them to ditch the phones. Commentator Dan Dawson previously claimed last year that Luke Littler ruffled rivals up the wrong way for his love of FIFA and sweeties backstage and now Anderson reckons Gen Z need to loosen up. He said: "The good old days, that's when darts players were darts players. Me, Lewis, Taylor, Kevin [Painter], we used to sit and have a crack and a laugh. Aidy Lewis was brilliant, and I wish he comes back. I do miss him." Anderson is eyeing World Matchplay glory in Blackpool after admitting the clock is ticking on his career at the top. 'Nowadays nobody talks to anybody. You don't have a good laugh; you don't have a bit of banter. The youngsters are boring, absolutely boring. You talk to them, they're too busy looking at their phones. "These youngsters, they're here to do a job. They've got to the stage now that they've realised, they've got a great chance in life to make a lot of bloody money and boost themselves. "But they need to calm down and think this is my job and that's it. They're good but they aren't that good. That's what you've got to remember.' The Scot was roared on by a lively Winter Gardens darts crowd as he pulled away from 5-5, winning five straight legs to beat Woodhouse and book his place in round two with ease. Anderson said: 'It went 5-5, I don't know what happened after that. I changed darts a few times, which is not a good thing. But it came right in the end.' On the huge support he got from the Winter Gardens crowd, Anderson added: 'This lot, what a mad bunch. It's still the Scottish holidays. Come Tuesday they'll all be away home. 'But it's appreciated. I've not got many years left, I'm just soaking it in.' Luke Littler finally tasted victory under the Blackpool lights last night. The world champion was beaten by Michael van Gerwen in the first round on his Matchplay debut last year but wasted no time in putting that right. The 18-year-old averaged 121 in the first mini session as he took a 5-0 lead over Ryan Searle before going on to win 10-2 with an average of more than 108. Littler will face Jermaine Wattimena in the second round after the Dutchman beat Anderson's fellow Scot Peter Wright 10-8 earlier in the day. Snakebite rallied from 4-1 down to level at 8-8 but Wattimena eased over the line. Anderson had stopped the rot for the seeds after all the ranked players lost in the afternoon session, with Damon Heta, Rob Cross, Wright and Dave Chisnall all dumped out. Andrew Gilding saw off Heta 12-10 after a marathon battle, while Cross lost 10-8 to Dirk van Duijvenbode and World Grand Prix champion Mike de Decker beat Chisnall 10-7. De Decker said: 'There were ups and downs, good spells, bad spells. I can take a lot of confidence. 'My majors since the World Grand Prix were decent until the World Championship. I got new darts and am still trying to get fully confident.'

Dog the Bounty Hunter's stepson bragged about shooting rifle with son before horror death
Dog the Bounty Hunter's stepson Gregory Zecca and his son Anthony were seen enjoying a shooting range years before the accidental shooting fatality at the weekend The stepson of Dog the Bounty Hunter had bragged about shooting guns with his son years before his tragic accidental death. Gregory Zecca, who is passionate about his love of guns, seemingly passed down his feelings to his son Anthony. Sadly, an accident over the weekend saw Zecca's 13-year-old son shot and killed. The tragedy is said to have occurred in their apartment in Florida on Saturday. Now, their love of guns has been made apparent in a number of past social media post. In 2021, footage showed the 38-year-old bounty hunter showing his child, who was nine at the time, how to use a rifle. The images were taken at Franktown Firearms Shooting Center in Franktown, Colorado. In the Instagram post, which has its comments disabled, Zecca said: "Getting some range time in with our buddies @franktownfirearms." Anthony is seen in the posts smiling as he takes aim at the targets. In another image, Zecca and his son both smile for the camera as they wear their protective ear muff and goggles while holding the firearms. Following the tragic fatality, Dog - whose real name is Duane Chapman - and his partner Francie, released a statement to TMZ through a representative. It read: "We are grieving as a family over this incomprehensible tragic accident and would ask for continued prayers as we grieve the loss of our beloved grandson, Anthony." Gregory, who is Francie's child from a previous marriage, became part of Dog's life when he married Francie in 2021. The couple found solace in each other following the deaths of their respective spouses. Gregory is also part of Dog's bounty hunting crew, working alongside Dog and his daughter, Lyssa. In 2020, Francie told ET of their connection: "We understood the pain that the other one was feeling, and [in] those tough days and moments, we helped each other stand up. "We could cry with each other and talk about what we were feeling. We were able to walk alongside each other through the pain and heartbreak, and it brought us together in this amazing way." In 2023, Dog also told his followers of his secret son. The revelation came on the fourth anniversary of his late wife Beth's passing. At the time, he introduced his adult son to the world through a social media post. The image showed a well-built man dressed in a blue polo shirt and smart jeans, complete with sunglasses reminiscent of those his father famously wears. Dog explained the tale behind his secret son would be revealed in his memoir titled Nine Lives and Counting. The reality TV star is best known for catching criminals in the US, in particular Hawaii.
