Govt firmly rejects attempts to normalise LGBTQ culture, says religious affairs minister
KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 — The government rejects all attempts to normalise lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) culture, whether implicitly or openly, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar.
He said that as a country which upholds Islam as the religion of the federation and adheres to noble Eastern cultural values, any attempt to normalise such deviant lifestyles is contrary to the Federal Constitution, existing laws and official government policy.
'I view seriously the reports regarding the organisation of a programme themed 'Pride Care: Queer Stories & Sexual Health Awareness', which was allegedly aimed at celebrating Pride Month, as circulated on social media recently.
'The organisation of such programmes, even if held behind closed doors, clearly challenges societal norms and religious values upheld by the majority of Malaysians,' he said in a statement last night.
In this regard, Mohd Na'im urged the authorities, including the Royal Malaysia Police, to immediately investigate the programme and take appropriate action should there be any breach of the law.
He further called on the organisers to immediately cease all activities that contravene the law and moral values of society.
'Religious agencies, including the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and the state Islamic departments, are also urged to be ready to play their enforcement role, particularly if Muslims are involved,' he said.
At the same time, Mohd Na'im called on all parties to work together to safeguard the social and moral fabric of the nation from any elements that may harm the faith, morality, and harmony.
'The Madani government will continue to uphold the principles of 'maqasid syariah' in national governance to preserve religion, morality, and dignity,' he said, while stressing that a deviant culture will never become the norm in Malaysia. — Bernama

PETALING JAYA : Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh has urged Tengku Zafrul Aziz to step down as investment, trade and industry minister following his resignation from Umno. Akmal welcomed Tengku Zafrul's departure from Umno, describing it as 'great news' for the party but demanded that Tengku Zafrul relinquish his Cabinet post. 'He should resign as minister as well,' he said in a Facebook post. 'And to PKR, I hope you can accept Tengku Zafrul as a member to prove how 'loyal' you are in your friendship with Umno. 'Umno members are overjoyed with this news. He came (into Umno) uninvited and his departure is not regretted,' said the Merlimau assemblyman. Earlier this evening, Tengku Zafrul said he submitted his letter of resignation as an Umno member today and will be applying to join PKR. Citing 'compatibility and suitability', he said he decided to leave the party after seeking advice from friends within and outside Umno, including party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The senator was previously an Umno Supreme Council member and also headed the Kota Raja Umno division. Speculation of his departure from Umno had started since December last year.

Warisan's track record doesn't reflect good governance, says GRS leader
Restructuring efforts are being carried out for Sabah International Petroleum and Sabah Development Bank, says GRS's Penampang Youth chief Ceasar Mandela Malakun. PETALING JAYA : Warisan's track record with state-linked companies does not reflect good governance, says a divisional youth chief of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah. Ceasar Mandela Malakun, head of GRS Penampang Youth, dismissed recent claims on good governance raised by Warisan vice-president Junz Wong. Malakun said Warisan's portrayal of itself as a reform-oriented government did not reflect the realities of its time in power from 2018 to 2020. Malakun highlighted the serious concerns that were raised over Sabah International Petroleum (SIP) and Sabah Development Bank (SDBank) at the time. The concerns were about the concentration of power and oversight when the chief minister, who was also state finance minister, added on the role of SIP chairman. 'From May 2018 to September 2020, SIP's debts to SDBank increased from RM1.05 billion to RM1.24 billion, while its total group liabilities – combining those with commercial banks – rose to RM1.75 billion,' he said in a statement today. Malakun also pointed to SDBank's external bond obligations which reportedly jumped from RM3.66 billion to RM4.57 billion by the time Warisan left office. 'Despite clear signs of financial distress, the bank continued to declare annual profits,' he said. 'Industry observers at the time said this raised concerns of governance weaknesses, including the possible use of creative accounting practices that may have masked the bank's underlying financial risks,' he said. Malakun said the GRS-led government is currently undertaking restructuring efforts to restore proper financial discipline, improve risk management, and ensure that SIP and SDBank serve their developmental mandates effectively. 'Sabahans deserve the truth, not Junz's selective memory. Governance isn't about rhetorics, it's about taking responsibility,' he said.
