Malaysian tycoon Robert Kuok's daughter takes over Shangri-La Asia CEO role, earns over RM310,000 a month
SINGAPORE, July 16 — Kuok Hui Kwong, daughter of Malaysian billionaire Tan Sri Robert Kuok, has been appointed chief executive of Shangri-La Asia, the Hong Kong and Singapore dual-listed luxury hotel group announced in a stock exchange filing today. Her appointment takes effect on August 1. The 47-year-old has served as the company's chairman since 2017 and has been an executive director since 2016. Shangri-La Asia said her new role as both chairman and CEO is expected to improve 'strategic cohesion and operational execution by ensuring a unified and consistent vision across all levels of leadership'. She succeeds former CEO Lim Beng Chee, who retired at the end of 2022. Lim remains on the board as a non-executive director. According to The Straits Times, Kuok Hui Kwong is the sixth of Robert Kuok's eight children and ranked 40th on Fortune's 2024 list of the most powerful women in Asia. Under her current contract, she receives a monthly base salary of HK$576,000 (RM311,630), along with discretionary bonuses and pension benefits. She also holds a direct and indirect interest in 95.57 million shares, or about 2.7 per cent, of the company. Kuok Hui Kwong graduated with a bachelor's degree in East Asian studies from Harvard University and previously served as managing director and CEO of SCMP Group, which publishes the South China Morning Post. The Kuok Group sold the media arm to Chinese tech giant Alibaba in 2016. Founded by Robert Kuok in 1971 with the opening of the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore, Shangri-La Asia today owns 81 of the more than 100 hotels it operates under its four brands: Shangri-La, Kerry, Hotel Jen and Traders. As of its 2024 annual report, its hotel assets had a net asset value of US$10.83 billion. For the financial year ended December 2024, the group reported revenue of US$2.19 billion, a 2 per cent increase year on year, but net profit fell 12.3 per cent to US$161.4 million, weighed down by rising operating and financing costs. Following news of Kwok Hui Kwong's appointment, Shangri-La Asia's shares on the Singapore Exchange rose 2.4 per cent to HK$4.67 as of 3.11pm today, though they remain down nearly 14 per cent for the year.

Loke: Puspakom no longer only option for vehicle ownership checks, four new companies appointed
PUTRAJAYA, July 16 — The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has appointed four companies to implement Motor Vehicle Inspection Centre (PPKM) services with a specific function for the Change of Ownership Inspection (MV15) for private vehicles. Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the appointment of the four companies to implement the MV15 inspection is one of MOT's efforts to increase the supply of vehicle ownership inspection services in the market. He said the initiative would also make it easier for the public to obtain vehicle ownership inspection services without having to crowd at the existing PPKM which also conducts periodic inspections of heavy vehicles. 'Previously, any vehicle owner who wants to sell car, or buy a used car, must send the vehicle for verification before the transfer of ownership is allowed. 'Now they only have one option, which is to go to the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom), so by opening a new market, it will further facilitate the process of transferring vehicle ownership because the public can go to any company premises that offers this service,' he said in a press conference here today. According to Loke, the appointment of the four companies was made in accordance with the decision of the Cabinet Meeting on March 17, 2023 which had agreed to open motor vehicle inspection services required under the Road Transport Act 1987 [Act 333] to other qualified companies. The four companies appointed are Carro Technology Sdn Bhd; Carsome Academy Sdn Bhd; Wawasan Bintang Sdn Bhd; and Beriman Gold Sdn Bhd. Loke said all the companies were given 12 months to make preparations based on the conditions set out in the Guidelines for Granting PPKM Licences MV15. 'During this period, JPJ will carry out continuous monitoring and the Operating Licence will only be granted after the company concerned meets all regulatory requirements and equipment requirements and is ready to commence operations,' he said. Among the main conditions are the company's strong capabilities with a minimum paid-up capital of RM1 million, Sdn Bhd status and local ownership; and submit a location proposal for consideration subject to approval by MOT or Road Transport Department (JPJ). In addition, the company also needs to provide infrastructure that includes the development of premises, the acquisition of inspection equipment, integration with the MySikap system and the requirements to obtain approval from relevant authorities; and ensure that Motor Vehicle Inspectors receive competency accreditation by JPJ before they can commence work. 'Since some of the companies offered also carry out other activities such as buying and selling used vehicles, the company is required to provide an inspection room or lane as well as special staff for the purpose of operating PPKM MV15 is subject to the ISO/IEC 17020:2012 Conformity Assessment Requirements for the Operation of Various Types of Bodies Performing Inspection standard,' he said. Loke said the opening of more PPKMs is aimed at increasing healthy competition and ensuring better quality vehicle inspections for the safety of road users. 'The expansion of PPKMs is also in line with the current Vehicle Inspection Service policy, where the government has shifted from a single-player concession system to a multi-player licensing system,' he said. Loke meanwhile said that in the future, the ministry will see if there is a need to make it mandatory for motorcycles to be inspected before ownership changes are allowed. 'Right now, we do not make it mandatory for motorcycles to be inspected before ownership changes, but after we have these better facilities, we will also see if there is a need for motorcycles to also need to be verified before the ownership change is implemented,' he said. — Bernama

PNB named top Malaysian sovereign investor, 17th globally in Global SWF rankings
KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 — Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) has been recognised as the top Malaysian sovereign investor and ranked 17th globally in the 2025 GSR (Governance, Sustainability, and Resilience) Scoreboard published by United States-based research firm Global SWF. The GSR Scoreboard has become the measuring stick of best practices among state-owned investors around the world. It evaluates more than 200 sovereign wealth funds (SWF) and public pension funds worldwide on governance practices, sustainability commitments and institutional resilience. In a statement today, PNB said it received an overall score of 84 per cent, including a perfect 10 out of 10 for sustainability, in recognition of its climate targets, environmental, social and governance (ESG) integration, and transparency in reporting. 'The ranking reflects the significant progress PNB has made in strengthening governance, embedding sustainability across its investment processes, and enhancing its long-term institutional resilience,' it said. PNB deputy president and group chief executive Datuk Rick Ramli said the ranking reflects the fund's ongoing efforts to incorporate responsible and sustainable practices in its operations and investment activities. 'It is also a strong encouragement for us to continue pushing for long-term value creation for our unit holders and the wider Malaysian economy, in line with PNB's purpose of uplifting the financial lives of Malaysians across generations,' he said. PNB said that notable progress includes a 98 per cent reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions from its 2022 baseline, in line with its target to achieve net zero operations by 2025. On portfolio-level targets, PNB has pledged to achieve a net-zero investment portfolio by 2050 and has so far channelled RM5.5 billion into green and transition assets, representing 55 per cent of its RM10 billion target by 2030. PNB has also implemented a living wage policy for its employees since 2023 and is now encouraging its investee companies to adopt similar practices under the government's GEAR-uP initiative. — Bernama
