Meet the Maker: Big Ro6

Axios12-06-2025
Meet Big Ro6, the Indianapolis emcee who is bringing "pirate rap" to the masses.
The inspo: Although it was released last fall, his latest single " Decisions" has grown into a viral smash over the past month thanks to both a unique delivery and a Blockbuster film.
Big Ro6 (pronounced Big Rob) and "Decisions" also won over the judges on The Debut, a YouTube channel dedicated to showcasing up-and-coming hip-hop artists that he appeared on in November.
His visit to the platform has garnered nearly 260,000 views.
The intrigue: His big break came after Ryan Coogler's " Sinners" hit theaters on April 18, bringing attention to traditional Black and Irish music.
Music fans found the perfect marriage of that mashup in "Decisions" which sees Big Ro6 employ a Gaelic-inspired, sea shanty-like delivery to create an extremely catchy cadence.
With a gold grill that would be the envy of Captain Jack Sparrow, Big Ro6 plays up the swashbuckling for "Decisions," wearing a skull and crossbones shirt on the single's cover.
Seriously, the only thing missing is a few "Arrr's" and someone walking a plank.
By the numbers: By the time Big Ro6 dropped the video for "Decisions" on May 4, his prior live performances and overall buzz for the song sent it to the top of YouTube's trending page.
The song now has nearly 7 million streams on YouTube between the original audio released last fall and this spring's visual.
It has another 4.8 million streams on Spotify.

Taylor Swift Episode Shatters ‘New Heights' Viewership Record

Taylor Swift's New Heights episode has become the most viewed video in the history of the three-year-old podcast hosted by Travis and Jason Kelce. According to Billboard, depending on the episode, the Kelce's can get anywhere from 12K to 300K views per episode. However, Swift's appearance has generated way more traffic. The outlet reports that just 17 hours after its debut, Swift's installment had more than 10.8 million views. This came in ahead of the show's most viewed episode to date, a 2024 episode with Jason's wife Kylie Kelce and a 2023 installment with Travis' teammate, Patrick Mahomes. YouTube hits play on bid to broadcast the Oscars

Every good Oscar race needs a dark horse nominee, even the race to own the Oscars itself. YouTube has presented itself as that very out-of-left-field pick, Bloomberg reports. While ABC will air the ceremony through 2028—as it has done for decades at this point—the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences is currently in the middle of negotiations about the future of Hollywood's biggest night. If YouTube had its druthers, that night would also be small enough to fit right inside its little video player. As other streamers scoop up live rights left and right, YouTube has also shown an increased interest in the space. YouTube TV recently acquired exclusive rights to NFL Sunday Ticket, and Bloomberg points out that the streamer also made a big deal of just how many people watched Taylor Swift's album announcing appearance on the Kelce brother's New Heights podcast last week. (Approximately 13 million people tuned in within 24 hours, Variety reports.) YouTube snatching the Oscars would be a shock, but it also makes a sort of sense. Nominations are already announced via a livestream on the platform, as they are with most award shows these days. Other film-specific awards like the Independent Spiritm Awards are already using the platform to broadcast their ceremonies. Bloomberg also points out that YouTube is 'the single most-watched video platform in the world' and would almost certainly deliver eyeballs after viewership for ABC's broadcast dipped for the first time in four years this March. Still, nothing has been decided as of this writing, and other competitors have their own standard cable networks or connections to major studios to sweeten the pot. ABC will almost certainly make a bid to extend its contract, and Bloomberg reports that NBCUniversal, Netflix, Amazon, and Paramount are also hovering. We'll see who wins the big one in the coming months and years. More from A.V.
