By: Bernama Text Size: Anwar exchanges the memorandum of understanding with Abang Johari. - fotoBERNAMA PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Government and Sarawak have signed a joint declaration, reaching an understanding on matters involving Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros). The declaration was signed at Perdana Putra by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and Sarawak Premier, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. At a joint press conference, Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said the agreement represented a step forward in national and state development through cooperation between Petronas and Petros. 'This understanding, in principle, had been discussed earlier with the Premier, taking into account the parameters that recognise both the Petroleum Development Act (PDA) 1974 and Sarawak's amended Distribution of Gas Ordinance (DGO) 2016,' he said. Anwar said the agreement reflected Sarawak's growing maturity and capability, including the establishment of a state oil company with significant potential. He added that the understanding ensured Petronas' role would remain intact, while Petros' position in Sarawak would be formally recognised.

'This understanding allows Petronas to continue its operations, while recognising Petros as a key player in Sarawak. Both will work together to elevate Malaysia's standing in the oil and gas sector,' he said. Anwar also said the government aimed to position Sarawak as the regional hub for the oil and gas industry in ASEAN. 'I believe this is a realistic and strategic move that will strengthen the nation's economy and enhance Sarawak's position,' he said. Also present were Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof; Sarawak Utilities and Telecommunications Minister, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi; and Works Minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Shamsul Azhar Abbas; Attorney-General, Datuk Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar; and Sarawak Attorney-General, Datuk Saferi Ali, also attended the ceremony. On Feb 17, 2025, Anwar said the Federal and Sarawak governments acknowledged Sarawak's aspiration to develop its own oil and gas industry. KUALA LUMPUR: The Court of Appeal has set June 10 for the ad interim hearing of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's bid to stay proceedings in a 2021 sexual assault suit filed by his former research officer, Muhammed Yusoff Rawther. Anwar's lawyer, Datuk Seri Rajasegaran Krishnan, said the date was fixed during case management before deputy registrar Ahmad Izuddin Fajri Fakrullah. "The full stay application hearing is on July 21,'" he told the "New Straits Times". The hearing comes ahead of the civil trial on June 16 before High Court judge Roz Mawar Rozain. The suit was filed before Anwar became prime minister on Nov 24, 2022. Separately, Rajasegaran said Sept 2 was set for case management in Anwar's appeal against Roz Mawar's decision rejecting his bid to refer eight constitutional questions to the Federal Court, including whether he has immunity from civil suits. Roz Mawar, in her decision, ruled that Anwar's referral application on the eight constitutional questions was speculative and did not meet the requirements under Section 84 of the Courts of Judicature Act. Anwar had sought the apex court to rule whether Articles 5, 8, 39, 40 and 43 of the constitution grant him qualified immunity from Yusoff's suit. He also argued that the suit could impair his ability to perform executive duties and undermine the constitutional separation of powers.

High Court: Petros-Petronas legal hearing to proceed this June 11
Judicial Commissioner Dato Faridz Gohim Abdullah, in delivering his ruling, held that there were no compelling grounds to warrant a postponement or suspension of the case. KUCHING (June 6): The High Court here has reaffirmed that the legal proceedings between state-owned Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) and national oil corporation Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) will proceed on June 11. According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, the Court dismissed two applications filed by Petronas seeking an adjournment or stay of proceedings. Judicial Commissioner Dato Faridz Gohim Abdullah, in delivering his ruling, held that there were no compelling grounds to warrant a postponement or suspension of the case. The dispute centres on RM7.95 million received through a bank guarantee, which Petros alleges was wrongfully claimed by Petronas. Petros described the demand for payment as 'unconscionable' and 'unlawful', and seeks a court order restraining Petronas from using the funds. The disagreement traces back to October 2024, when Petronas called on the bank guarantee following a RM28.1 million demand from Petros in relation to gas supplied. Petros subsequently filed legal action against Petronas and applied for an interim injunction to prevent disbursement of the funds. However, the injunction application became academic after Maybank Islamic Bhd proceeded with the payment to Petronas. The report noted this is not the first time Petronas has sought to delay proceedings. In April, a similar application to suspend the lawsuit was dismissed after the Court found no exceptional circumstances to justify such relief. MIDF Research: Oil prices under pressure as supply outpaces demand
KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 — Crude oil prices are expected to remain under pressure and could fall below US$65 per barrel (pb) due to persistent oversupply and weaker demand projections, according to MIDF Amanah Investment Bank Bhd (MIDF Research). However, MIDF Research noted that prices may stabilise over the longer term, even as inventories continue to rise. Sentiment surrounding trade policy developments between the United States (US) and China remains a significant risk to market movements, it said in a note today. 'Natural gas and liquified natural gas (LNG) are expected to see a rebound after May 2025's maintenance round concluded for most of the global gas and LNG facilities. 'Nevertheless, the downside risks to the lower oil price remain on new exploration projects, but may be beneficial for onshore storage, long-term tankers and retail fuel,' it said. MIDF Research opines that the scenarios of the global oil market and global economy will continue to keep Brent crude oil price within the US$60-65 pb range, averaging around US$62 pb in June 2025. 'This lower expectation is considering the risks of post-US trade tariff pause, as well as the stockpiling of oil inventories in the near term,' said MIDF Research. Meanwhile, the investment bank said Asean collaborations have offered a brighter outlook for the oil and gas (O&G) sector. MIDF Research stated that Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) is continuing its aggressive exploration and production (E&P) activities in the upstream sector, despite lower crude oil prices. Meanwhile, the midstream and downstream divisions are expected to turn towards sustainability and green energy solutions, integrating these initiatives into their operations. 'During the Asean summit that concluded in May 2025, the transportation and logistics of LNG and carbon capture and storage (CCS) were highlighted as strategic priorities for the region. 'More focus was set on renewable energy and hydrogen projects to be integrated with the conventional O&G developments, providing a balanced and sound energy transition as highlighted in Malaysia's National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR),' it noted. MIDF Research added that regional cooperation is likely to expand through energy security, carbon credit management, Environmental Corporation America (ECA) compliance and CCS solutions. 'In addition, we opine that domestic demand and robust LNG exports will continue to locally support the sector. 'Overall, we retain a 'Neutral' view on the O&G sector, as it continues to face challenges, primarily from oil price volatility, driven by output hikes from the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries plus (OPEC+) and non-OPEC producers, including sluggish global demand due to tariff-related uncertainties,' it added. — Bernama
