Vanessa Kirby Says Playing Pregnant Sue Storm ‘Changed' Her
Vanessa Kirby talks about playing pregnant Sue Storm
In a recent interview, Vanessa Kirby opened up about Sue Storm's character arc in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
'Sue was never sat down,' the Napoleon actress told PEOPLE. 'She was never huffing and puffing about it.' Kirby stressed that the character's pregnancy 'didn't define' the latter.
'She was absolutely a mother, and of course, in the comics, that's so definitively her,' she added. 'But she's also been a team member that defends, that goes up against great threats.'
Kirby explained that she 'had the lived experience of somebody who was doing this incredibly sacred thing and fulfilling what she needed to do at the same time as a woman and a team member.' The 37-year-old noted that this experience 'changed' her.
The Pieces of a Woman star revealed she is expecting her first child in May 2025, while attending a CCXPMX Film Festival panel in Mexico City. Moreover, in June, the actress shared a post on Instagram, where she said she learned a lot about being a first-time mother from playing Sue Storm.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps launches in theaters across the United States on July 25, 2025.
Matt Shakman, who previously directed episodes of WandaVision, helmed the film. Ian Springer, Jeff Kaplan, Eric Pearson, and Josh Friedman worked on the screenplay. The former three also developed the film's story.
The film currently has an 88% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. This is much higher than the scores of previous Fantastic Four film adaptations.
Besides Kirby, the film also stars Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ralph Ineson, Julia Garner, Natasha Lyonne, Paul Walter Hauser, and Sarah Niles.

‘Fantastic Four: First Steps' scores Marvel's first $100 million box office opening of 2025
Film Review - The Fantastic Four: First Steps LOS ANGELES (AP) — Marvel's first family has finally found box office gold. 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps,' the first film about the superheroes made under the guidance of Kevin Feige and the Walt Disney Co., earned $118 million in its first weekend in 4,125 North American theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday. That makes it the fourth biggest opening of the year, behind 'A Minecraft Movie,' 'Lilo & Stitch' and 'Superman,' and the biggest Marvel opening since 'Deadpool & Wolverine' grossed $211 million out of the gate last summer. Internationally, 'Fantastic Four' made $100 million from 52 territories, adding up to a $218 million worldwide debut. The numbers were within the range the studio was expecting. The film arrived in the wake of another big superhero reboot, James Gunn's 'Superman,' which opened three weekends ago and has already crossed $500 million globally. That film, from the other main player in comic book films, DC Studios, took second place with $24.9 million domestically. 'First Steps' is the latest attempt at bringing the superhuman family to the big screen, following lackluster performances for other versions. The film, based on the original Marvel comics, is set during the 1960s in a retro-futuristic world led by the Fantastic Four, a family of astronauts-turned-superhuman from exposure to cosmic rays during a space mission. The family is made up of Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), who can stretch his body to incredible lengths; Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), who can render herself invisible; Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn), who transforms into a fiery human torch; and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), who possesses tremendous superhuman strength with his stone-like flesh. The movie takes place four years after the family gained powers, during which Reed's inventions have transformed technology, and Sue's diplomacy has led to global peace. Both audiences and critics responded positively to the film, which currently has an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and promising exit poll responses from opening weekend ticket buyers. An estimated 46% of audiences chose to see it on premium screens, including IMAX and other large formats. The once towering Marvel is working to rebuild audience enthusiasm for its films and characters. Its two previous offerings this year did not reach the cosmic box office heights of 'Deadpool & Wolverine," which made over $1.3 billion, or those of the 'Avengers'-era. But critically, the films have been on an upswing since the poorly reviewed 'Captain America: Brave New World,' which ultimately grossed $415 million worldwide. 'Thunderbolts," which jumpstarted the summer movie season, was better received critically but financially is capping out at just over $382 million globally. Like Deadpool and Wolverine, the Fantastic Four characters had been under the banner of 20th Century Fox for years. The studio produced two critically loathed, but decently profitable attempts in the mid-2000s with future Captain America Chris Evans as the Human Torch. In 2015, it tried again (unsuccessfully) with Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller. They got another chance after Disney's $71 billion acquisition of Fox's entertainment assets in 2019. Top 10 movies by domestic box office With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore: 1. 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps,' $118 million. 2. 'Superman,' $24.9 million. 3. 'Jurassic World Rebirth,' $13 million. 4. 'F1: The Movie,' $6.2 million. 5. 'Smurfs,' $5.4 million. 6. 'I Know What You Did Last Summer,' $5.1 million. 7. 'How to Train Your Dragon,' $2.8 million. 8. 'Eddington,' $1.7 million. 9. 'Saiyaara,' $1.3 million. 10. 'Oh, Hi!,' $1.1 million. ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Notches $118 Million Opening Weekend—Just Trailing ‘Superman' Opening
'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' grossed $118 million at the domestic box office over the weekend—largely meeting earlier projections, but still placing it behind 'Superman' for the biggest superhero film opening of 2025 so far. Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn, Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby attend a launch event for "The ... More Fantastic Four: First Steps" in Berlin. Getty Images The new adaptation of the iconic Marvel superhero team starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bacharach and Joseph Quinn received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, according to Rotten Tomatoes, propelling the film globally to a $218 million opening weekend after factoring in another $100 million overseas. The Matt Shakman-directed Marvel film boasted the year's second-highest opening day, grossing $57 million at the domestic box office Friday—placing it behind only 'A Minecraft Movie,' which opened with $57.11 million in April. The film met projections from Box Office Pro, who estimated it could gross in the $115 million–$135 million range—but fell behind some bullish predictions from insiders who saw the first night sales, Deadline reported. The ticket sales propelled it to the fourth-highest opening weekend of the year, behind 'A Minecraft Movie' ($162 million), 'Lilo & Stitch' ($146 million), and 'Superman' ($125 million). 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' marks the biggest hit for Marvel Studios at the box office this year. The studio that enjoyed outsized success with big budget superhero movies in an interconnected cinematic universe was off to a slower start in 2025 than it was used to. 'Captain America: Brave New World' opened with $88 million, while 'Thunderbolts*' opened with only $74.3 million. 'Thunderbolts*,' which opened in May, ended up grossing over $382 million at the box office, but was still among the lowest earning Marvel Cinematic Universe films released since the project began. Surprising Fact Although the Fantastic Four comics have been around since 1961, the past attempts to adapt the Marvel mainstays have mostly underperformed at the box office. 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' has now had the best opening weekend of any of the past three adaptations. 'Fantastic Four,' the first adaptation in 2005, starring Jessica Alba, Ioan Gruffudd, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis, opened with $56 million before finishing at around $333.5 million worldwide by the end of its run in theaters. The sequel, 'Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,' opened with $58 million at the domestic box office in 2007, but ended up grossing less than the first installment, with $301.9 million worldwide. The 2015 reboot 'Fantastic Four,' directed by Josh Trank and starring Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara and Jamie Bell mostly flopped, opening with only $25 million at the domestic box office and grossing $167.9 million worldwide. Big hits from the previous weeks rounded out the rest of the box office charts over the weekend, with 'Superman' grossing about $25 million for second place. 'Jurassic World Rebirth' remained in third place with a $13 million weekend, and 'F1' hung on after debuting in June to gross about $6 million, according to early figures reported by Hollywood trade publications.

When she refuses, he starts to play messages from other planets that we destroyed, showing her the damage that she has done. She immediately runs away, leaving Johnny alone in Times Square the team wondering what they should do next. Reed immediately comes up with another plan, but after his conversation with Sue about sometimes coming up with the harshest ideas, he knows that she won't like it. However, it also involves them using Franklin as bait in order to lure Galactus to the transporter. The team agrees that it is the best way and they even create a special baby carrier that would be able to withstand multiple attacks. Galactus soon realizes that the carrier is empty before he event steps into the transporter and immediately turns away to head over to the Baxter Building. He is successfully able to grab Franklin and takes him away to eat him. Sue, immediately seeing that her baby was taken, jumps into action and uses her powers to push Galactus to the Times Square portal. While Earth is seemingly saved, we realize that Sue has been out cold on the ground and the rest of the team immediately go to her. Unfortunately, Sue pushed herself too hard and she died trying to save her baby. Reed and the rest of the team start to mourn her. Also, we've already seen what happens next to them in the post-credit scene for Thunderbolts* so we know that this is not the end of their story. Here's to looking forward to the rest of phase 6!
