Kering Eyewear and Google team to develop AI smart glasses
Kering Eyewear, a subsidiary of French luxury-goods giant Kering, has partnered with Google to develop AI-powered smart glasses.
The partnership aims to integrate high-end eyewear design with Google's extended reality (XR) technology, combining 'cutting-edge' design, intelligent features, and human-centric technology in one device.
The firms plan to develop eyewear which will feature AI-based functions designed to provide intuitive and personalised user experiences.
These will range from smart interactions to contextual awareness, with a strong emphasis on aesthetics, style, and comfort.
Kering Eyewear founder, president, and CEO Roberto Vedovotto said: 'Together, we are shaping a product that people will want to wear: a pair of masterfully designed, high-quality, stylish glasses that unlock the potential of artificial intelligence, while redefining the way of interacting with both the real and virtual worlds.'
Google XR GM and VP Shahram Izadi said: 'We've always believed in blending cutting-edge technology with great user experiences.
'Integrating our immersive XR platform with Kering Eyewear's iconic styles will give consumers the fashion and function to get the most out of Android XR.'
Separately, Google has partnered with eyewear brand Warby Parker to develop AI-enabled glasses designed for all-day wear.
The collaboration aims to combine Warby Parker's design expertise with Google's technology platform to advance wearable computing.
The first range of products from this partnership is expected to launch after 2025.
The line will feature glasses equipped with multimodal AI capabilities and will be offered with both prescription and non-prescription lenses.
To fund the project, Google has pledged up to $75m to support Warby Parker's development and commercialisation efforts.
A further investment of up to $75m has been committed by Google, dependent on the achievement of certain project milestones and subject to Warby Parker's discretion.
Warby Parker co-founder and co-CEO Dave Gilboa said: 'Looking ahead, we believe multimodal AI is perfectly suited for glasses, enabling real-time context and intelligence to augment a wearer's surroundings as they move through the world.'
Izadi said: 'Warby Parker's optical expertise, omnichannel approach, and history of leveraging technology to create beautifully designed products and exceptional customer experiences make them the perfect partner to co-create and launch this next generation of smart glasses on the Android XR platform.'

Google completely remade its Snapseed iOS photo editor
After several years, Google has released a major update to the iOS version of its Snapseed photo editor. Version 3.0 is the program offers a complete redesign of both the iPhone and iPad apps. All of the images that have been edited with the tool are displayed in a grid. Navigation has been rearranged into three tabs, with a new Faves section for the photo tools that you want to quickly use on the regular. It boasts more than 25 different tools and filters for altering photos, including some newly added film filters. Snapseed also has a refreshed its logo with a more streamlined look. Google acquired Snapseed all the way back in 2012. The new take on the app is a surprise, since Snapseed hadn't received any major updates on iOS since 2021. One thing has not changed: the app is still free and has no advertisements. For now, the listing for Snapseed in Google Play is still a version from last year; it's unclear if or when 3.0 will arrive on Android.

Massive Google Cloud outage disrupts popular internet services
NEW YORK (AP) — Popular online services across the globe were disrupted Thursday due to ongoing issues at Google Cloud. Tens of thousands of users of Spotify, Discord and other platforms began noticing issues with their services early in the afternoon, according to Downdetector, which tracks outages. Outage reports for music streamer Spotify in particular, peaked around 3 p.m. Eastern Standard Time before dropping off, and some users began saying their access was restored. Google's Cloud status page said an incident with their systems affected clients in the U.S. and abroad. The company also posted that services are starting to recover after its engineers identified and began to mitigate the issue. "We have identified the root cause and applied appropriate mitigations," Google Cloud said. It added that there is no estimate for when the issue would be fully resolved. Google Cloud, which hosts a significant amount of services on the internet, has become the fastest growing part of Alphabet Inc., even though the company still makes most of its money from Google's ubiquitous search engine. Google Cloud's revenue last year totaled $43.2 billion, a 31% increase from 2023. By comparison, Alphabet's overall revenue grew by 14% last year.

Google, Spotify and other major platforms down in massive internet outage
Much of the internet appears to have broken, with Spotify, Google, Snap and Discord all hit by major issues. The problem appears to be related to technical issues at Google Cloud, which provides the infrastructure that powers much of the internet. Many Google products – such as Search, Gmail, Maps, Meet, Nest and others – were hit by the problems, according to tracking website Down Detector. But it also affected third-party websites; which may rely on Google's tools. That includes Snapchat, Discord, Spotify, the Pokémon trading card game and artificial intelligence tool Etsy, Shopify, UPS, Roblox and others also seemed to be affected by problems. Other web infrastructure platforms such as Cloudflare were also hit by problems, though Cloudflare itself was not affected, a spokesperson said. The problems appeared widespread, affecting vast numbers of users across the world, according to Down Detector. Google indicated on a tracking page that all of its regions had been hit by the problems. Issues began around 7pm UK time, or 2pm eastern. Shortly after, Google said that it was aware of the problems — but it took hours before it was able to begin a full recovery. Google Cloud's status website showed a vast array of issues across the world. Many of the technologies that third-party companies rely on to provide services were broken, it said. It apologised to 'all who are affected by the disruption'. It did not give any information about what had caused the problems – only that it had 'identified the root cause' and had 'applied appropriate mitigations'. At around 9pm in the UK, or 4pm eastern, the company said that it had found the issue and applied a fix. But it noted that there could still be issues and that it did not know when a full recovery would happen. People on social media were not happy to find that their favorite platforms were down. 'How spotify gonna be down when i am at the gym what tf am i supposed to do now,' one X user wrote. Another posted: 'Is this the end of the internet? how is everything down… AWS, Google Firebase, Cloudflare.' 'GUYS INTERNET IS COOKED Wtf do i do without discord and spotify im extremely bored, i cant even work google drive is down,' a third wrote.
