David Walliams gave 'Nazi salutes' on popular panel show as BBC issue statement

The 53-year-old, who left Britain's Got Talent in 2022 after making comments about the ITV show's contestants, is reported to have made the gesture twice during the filming of the show's Christmas special on Tuesday.
He is reported to have made the salutes while his teammate on the show, Call The Midwife's Helen George, was telling a story about her experience on Strictly Come Dancing, in which she said she sprained her wrist from 'waving too much during the Strictly tour'.
She was told by the opposing team, who she was trying to convince that her story was true, that her wave was 'too little', which is said to have led to Walliams joining in with a more vigorous wave which ended in a Nazi salute.
Walliams, whose real name is David Edward Williams, was reportedly told off for the gesture by host Rob Brydon, before then performing another salute with a sexual connotation after some light-hearted lewd jokes about George's time on Strictly.
The Times, who first reported the story, said team captain Lee Mack looked distinctly unimpressed by the incident.
One person, who the newspaper says was a part of the audience during the show's filming, posted on X: 'I didn't have David Walliams doing a Nazi salute at the Would I Lie To You? Christmas taping on my 2025 bingo card.'
It is understood that footage of the incident will not be broadcast.
Walliams left Britain's Got Talent after he was caught making 'disrespectful comments' during breaks in filming about auditioning contestants in January 2020 at the London Palladium.
Fremantle, which produces the ITV talent show, apologised after the comments were leaked and reached an 'amicable resolution' with Walliams after he sued the company for misuse of private information and breaching data law.
A spokesperson for Banijay UK, which owns Would I Lie To You? production company Zeppotron, said: 'Any attempt at humour regarding this deeply offensive gesture, whether broadcast or not, is completely unacceptable in any context.
'It was immediately acknowledged during the recording that this segment would not be broadcast under any circumstances and we apologise to those who were at the recording for any offence caused.'
A BBC spokesman told the Mirror: 'The use of such an offensive gesture is completely unacceptable and we apologise to all at the recording for the offence caused.'

We felt the need to clarify something,' Katya said at the start of the longer backstage video. 'We find it quite fascinating how people take time to look into in such detail every gesture, every look.' Wynne added: 'So we thought we'll mess around. And we said, 'Oh I'll put my hand on your waist, you pretend to move it away and let's see who notices it.' 'And now everybody thinks I'm a weirdo. But really I promise you I'm not. And we're doing this high ten thing as well where she blanks me from a high ten.' The BBC has ignited a fresh ageism row as four axed journalists file discrimination complaints and the broadcaster slashes jobs. The four senior reporters, aged over 50 years old, have allegedly expressed concerns they may be targeted for compulsory redundancy. The employees are also said to collectively have more than 100 years of experience between them. Over the span of their careers, they have apparently covered terror attacks and wars, according to The Sun. It comes as, in an attempt to save £700million, the broadcaster cut a whopping 130 jobs. Insiders have told The Sun that the process of employees having to apply for new jobs in the merger favours younger workers more because of it focusing on the previous two years of applicants' careers. Words like 'live page' and 'digital' are also allegedly favoured on applications. The BBC told The Sun: 'Restructuring in BBC News is taking place according to established BBC policies. 'We conduct all processes in a thorough and fair manner, and we are committed to supporting our staff throughout, including through comprehensive redeployment assistance.' MailOnline has approached the BBC for comment. It comes just months after four BBC broadcast news presenters, Martine Croxall, Karin Giannone, Kasia Madera and Annita McVeigh, dropped their tribunal over age and sex discrimination allegations on unknown terms. Karin Giannone confirmed to MailOnline the case has been dropped, saying in a statement on behalf of the four: 'We can confirm that we have reached a resolution with BBC management that avoids the need for a tribunal hearing in respect of our employment-related claims. 'A protracted process lasting almost three years is now over. We've been deeply moved by the support we've received. 'We look forward to contributing further to the success of BBC News, especially to live programming and the growing streaming services that are so important to our audiences.' While earlier this week, BBC TV and radio presenter Nihal Arthanayake, 54, opened up about how he feels in his workplace and claims there's a 'lack of diversity' at the broadcaster. The journalist first joined the BBC in 2002 when he became the co-host to BBC Radio 1's Asian Beats show and has several different roles since. The BBC presenter spoke candidly in a video on Instagram and said: 'So today I walked into the BBC building in Salford and I was struck yet again, not for the first time, just how few black and Asian people work in that building. 'And one thing that people have to understand is that when you walk into an environment where you just don't see anybody that looks like you, that has an effect. 'Since I called them out on it, well over a year ago, it seems like ain't a damn thing changed.' In the caption, Nihal revealed he would be leaving the BBC in September and elaborated on his concerns. The journalist penned: 'I remember calling out BBC North on the lack of diversity in the building I worked in. 'I remember speaking to some of the black and asian people who worked there and I kept hearing how isolating it was for them (not all obviously). 'It just struck me again today. It also reminded why I ll be leaving in September. Have pondered whether to press 'share' on this, but as I am leaving anyway...' The journalist shared a message he received from someone else who has worked at the BBC in another post. It read: 'I'm not sure the BBC is a place for people of colour I feel we get treated like 'pets', that we should be so grateful, despite grafting for our positions, & dare we speak out...' With the message, Nihal penned: 'Not sure I can disagree with these sentiments from someone who DM'd me about their experience of working at the BBC.' In the caption he revealed other former or current BBC colleagues had reached out to him. Nihal wrote: 'Had so many dms from people of colour who have worked or are still working at the BBC. 'BBC North is not an inclusive environment for people of colour. I am not the only one who thinks that.' A BBC spokesperson told MailOnline: 'We're sorry if anyone feels this way, as creating an inclusive culture where everyone feels they belong is a big priority for us and we know we have further to go. 'Whilst we're proud of the diversity of the BBC, we remain committed to continuing to build a workforce that fully reflects and represents the whole of the UK.' The BBC also shared that the proportion of employees from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds increased at the BBC last year and make up 17.2% of all employees at the broadcaster. A new boxset begins in tomorrow's episode of BBC drama Casualty and this time, the paramedics are in the spotlight. Supply and Demand will delve into the harrowing realities of a drug crisis. An interruption to the illegal drug supply chain puts pressure on the entire ED, who are also under strain from clinical drugs shortages. As addicts scour the streets, hospital medics will struggle to fill prescriptions. There's a lot going on in the opening instalment so, ahead of the broadcast, here's all the spoilers you need to know. Following Indie Jankowski's (Naomi Wakszlak) ambulance crash and the confession about the burglary, the dynamic between her and Jan Jennings (Di Botcher) remains tense. When we re-join the characters tomorrow, it's been three months since these events, but Jan is struggling to move past them. As a result of Iain Dean (Michael Stevenson) believing that Indie deserves a second chance, he starts to view the team differently, and realises the group he's worked hard to nurture is starting to fall apart. When Iain is offered a secondment at Hart, he is certainly tempted. We've previously seen the character leave his role at Holby ED to work at HEMs, but the Hazardous Area Response Team would see Iain dip into another side of being a paramedic. Following her cancer journey in the last mini-series, Stevie (Elinor Lawless) informs Flynn that she's just finished her chemo, and will be returning to work in two weeks. Last week, Ngozi Okoye (Adesuwa Oni) told Nicole Piper (Sammy T Dobson) about her alcoholism. In a shocking move though, Nicole ended their relationship moments after. More Trending In tomorrow's episode, things remain tense between Nicole and Ngozi, and they end up making a mistake while working together. Dylan (William Beck) tries to convince Ngozi to go to an AA meeting, but she doesn't think she has a drinking problem, and tells Dylan he can breathalyse her before every shift to prove it.
