New York should accelerate downstate casino approvals, Yonkers mayor says
The mayor of Yonkers says New York already has a winning pair of downstate casinos and thinks the state gaming commission should not wait until the December deadline to award licenses and cash in.
Mayor Mike Spano says Empire City in Yonkers and Resorts World in Queens should immediately be approved for full table gaming, so the state can start reaping the revenue.
New York casino licenses still up for grabs
Spano's statement comes after entertainment mogul Jay-Z was in Albany this week, reportedly building support for his team's bid to build a casino in New York City's Times Square.
In addition to Jay-Z's bid, other proposed casino sites include Coney Island, Citi Field and Hell's Kitchen. But the pool of downstate casino applicants has been shrinking in recent weeks. Wynn Resorts dropped its bid for a casino at Hudson Yards and Las Vegas Sands walked away from a proposal at the Nassau Coliseum.
The New York State Gaming Commission will license three full "table gaming casinos" out of eight expected applicants -- or nine if Nassau County finds another way in -- bringing table games, like poker and blackjack, to the New York City area.
John Sabini, a former New York gaming official, believes the two existing "slots only" casinos, Empire City and Resorts World, have a major advantage for a full gaming license.
"They've been good partners. They provide a lot of revenue right now. They're up and running. People are used to them being there, so the opposition wouldn't be there," Sabini said.
MGM said it's ready to expand Empire City to create a live entertainment venue if it gets a full gaming license.
Award casino licenses before "potential dips in the economy," mayor says
Organized opposition will be a major drag on several of the casino proposals, which is why Spano thinks the state should enable the Yonkers and Queens casinos to expand before the December deadline.
"We have potential federal cuts, potential dips in the economy that we're faced with. These casinos mean jobs, more aid to education," the mayor said.
The state gaming commission's process calls for waiting until December to announce the three license winners.
"The processes can be changed," Spano said. "Let's move forward at least with these two casinos, and then let the third casino happen organically."
Spano also urged the state to issue approvals shortly after the application period ends in June.

Guiducci jokingly calls the duck egg blue, mint, and lilac-toned packaging 'pura vida branded,' but that's exactly it. It's the quiet luxury-ification of protein powder. And then there's the actual powder itself. The five flavors (chocolate, vanilla, matcha, coconut acai, and chai) have almost hard to believe, work-smarter-not-harder claims. Protein! Iron! Electrolytes! Vitamins E, C, and D! Magnesium! Two scoops are a veritable who's who of my supplement cabinet. Guiducci and I have his-and-hers approaches to working Ka'chava protein powder into our daily routines. 'I like the chocolate or vanilla flavors very bare bones,' he says. 'Just ice, water, and creatine powder. I go for three scoops to make it a bit richer. It's the perfect snack between lunch and dinner.' My scoops and flavor depend on my mood. Much like my coworker, I stick to the classic chocolate and vanilla flavors: Vanilla integrates well into overnight oats and smoothies, while chocolate tastes best on its own. And while I've never gone as intense as three scoops, I usually find one heaping scoop or two in the morning boosts my energy for until lunch—and most importantly, tastes good.

Tyrese Haliburton urges Pacers to stay calm after Game 5 loss to Knicks: 'No need to panic'
With the Indiana Pacers just one win away from a trip to the NBA Finals, the team couldn't get it done in Game 5. The New York Knicks fought back, winning the contest 111-94 and pushing the series to 3-2. It was a welcome sign for New York, which had mostly looked overmatched in previous games of the series. It may have also been a turning point for the Knicks, who finally have some momentum as the series shifts to Game 6 Saturday in Indianapolis. Advertisement TNT analyst Charles Barkley may have summed it up best after Game 5, when he called Game 6 a "must-win" for the Pacers. His reasoning: If the Pacers drop two straight games and then have to go play a Game 7 in New York, the Knicks have a massive advantage. That puts a lot of pressure on the Pacers to finish the job in Game 6. Given what's at stake, that amount of pressure could prove overwhelming. Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton won't let that happen. Following Indiana's Game 5 loss, Haliburton urged his teammates to stay calm as the series heads to a Game 6, per ESPN. "We're a resilient group," Haliburton said after the game. "We always want to respond when things don't go well after a game like that. We understand what the stakes are. ... We're fine. There's no need to panic or anything." That's probably exactly what the Pacers need to hear after a disappointing performance in Game 5. Frustrations already seemed to be boiling over after the loss, as Pascal Siakam got into an awkward exchange with a reporter who questioned the Pacers' effort during the contest. Throughout the entire playoffs, the Pacers have thrived on their ability to be calm in tense situations. The team has pulled off multiple late-game comebacks in the postseason so far, showing poise when other teams would wilt under the pressure. Advertisement At the center of all those comebacks is Haliburton, who has excelled most when the Pacers needed it. Given Haliburton's late-game heroics, he's the perfect person to tell the rest of his teammates to remain calm ahead of what should be a pressure-packed Game 6. If they can follow that advice, there's a good chance the Pacers will find themselves in the NBA Finals soon. If not, it's going to be much harder to remain calm if a Game 7 in New York is on the schedule.
