SEC football analysts share optimism about Texas A&M's odds to reach 2025 CFP
With fall camp just around the corner for the Texas A&M football program, a pair of Southeastern Conference analysts previewed the 2025 season expectations for the Aggies.
Michael Bratton, otherwise known on social media as SEC Mike, shared optimism for the program's College Football Playoff hopes this year alongside co-host Cousin Shane. According to the breakdown from the duo on "That SEC Podcast", second-year head coach Mike Elko could bring Texas A&M back to the apex of the conference if they can stay healthy.
With the No. 10 strength of schedule in the country, the Aggies should be a lock for the CFP if they can find a way to achieve the program's first 10-win season since the Johnny Manziel era in 2012. According to college football analyst Kelley Ford, Elko and company have a 60% chance or more to win nine games this season, even considering the difficult schedule.
In Elko's first year at the helm, he led his team to an 8-5 record (5-3 in SEC play) with wins over the likes of Missouri, LSU, Florida, Arkansas and Mississippi State in his first season as a head coach in the conference. While the finish to the season left more to be desired, there were some impressive moments with glimpses of hope for Aggie fans heading into 2025.
"There was some big wins. I mean, I picked against them against Mizzou, I think I picked them against Florida and obviously LSU," Shane said. "There were some games I really didn't think Elko was going to get, so I think overall, when you're looking big picture, you're okay as an Aggie fan."
One of the biggest factors in the overall success of the program this season will be the Texas A&M running back room that features Le'Veon Moss, Amari Daniels and Reuben Owens II. The health of the group and the ability to set up big plays downfield with a dominant rushing attack are something that the Aggies will need to find again this season.
"If I'm an A&M fan, that's why I'm so excited because that's our bread and butter is running the football. When we were 7-1, we were dominant on the ground. If we can get back to that, this is going to be one heck of a year," Bratton said.
According to On3 Sports and 247Sports, Texas A&M hauled in the No. 11 portal class in the country this offseason, featuring the likes of NC State standout wide receiver KC Concepcion and Washington Huskies defensive back Jordan Shaw, among others.
When previewing the Aggies' schedule this season, Bratton and Shane predicted eight victories and four toss-up games. Florida at home and on the road against Notre Dame, LSU and Texas fell under the questionable category, but Shane rebutted Bratton's thoughts on the game against the Gators in College Station.
"This is a sweet little schedule. We're so quick to talk about Mizzou, Tennessee and Ole Miss, but A&M has a pretty easy (schedule)," Shane said. "It's not easy because nothing's easy when you have SEC teams on your schedule, but as of right now, I'm really liking this schedule."
If everything continues to trend in the right direction for the Aggies as the program transitions into fall camp, Texas A&M could potentially be a dark horse to reach this year's CFP.

Elite 2027 QB names FSU top five school, sets August commitment date
Florida State got its quarterback for the 2026 cycle last weekend when four-star Jaden O'Neal committed. They have two players committed in the 2027 class, but they don't have a quarterback yet. Four-star Jayce Johnson is one of their primary targets at the position for that particular class. Johnson has a total of 29 offers. However, he's narrowed his choices down to five schools. His final programs are the Mississippi State Bulldogs, Texas A&M Aggies, South Carolina Gamecocks, Tennessee Volunteers, and FSU. Also, Johnson has set his commitment date for Aug. 3. On3's industry rankings have Johnson as the No. 50 overall player in the country and the No. 5 quarterback. He's also the No. 6 prospect out of Georgia. His numbers weren't gaudy as a sophomore, but Johnson had some nice production. He completed 123 of his 183 passes as a sophomore (67.2 %) for 1,799 yards and 16 touchdowns with just three interceptions. Also, he gained 318 yards on the ground and scored three times. Johnson was in Tallahassee on June 5 for a camp, and he also took an unofficial visit on June 15. Hopefully, that was enough to secure his commitment. Who will win college football national championship? SEC, Big Ten dominate preseason title odds
Can Ohio State go back to back? The Buckeyes begin the season as the co-favorites to win the national title with Texas. Both Ohio State and the Longhorns are at +500 to win it all ahead of their Week 1 matchup in Columbus. Advertisement So far, Georgia is the only team to win back-to-back titles in the College Football Playoff era. The Bulldogs took down Alabama at the end of the 2021 season to win the national title and then demolished TCU at the end of the 2022 season to win it all. Those two titles for the Bulldogs came in the four-team version of the CFP. Ohio State's title a season ago came in the first 12-team playoff as the Buckeyes had to win four games. Ohio State blew out Tennessee at home and Oregon in the Rose Bowl, then held off Texas in the Cotton Bowl and Notre Dame in the national championship game. Both the Buckeyes and Longhorns enter the season with new starting quarterbacks. We shouldn't have to introduce you to Texas' starter, as Arch Manning is the summer Heisman favorite ahead of his first season as a full-time starter. In Columbus, former Alabama signee Julian Sayin is in line to take over for Will Howard. Sayin was the No. 2 pro style QB in the class of 2024 when he signed with the Crimson Tide and enrolled early. But he entered the transfer portal a month after he signed with Alabama following Nick Saban's retirement and went to Ohio State. Arch Manning didn't get many snaps in Texas' CFP semifinal loss to Ohio State last season, but he'll be leading the Longhorns in Columbus in Week 1 this season. () (Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) Sayin is +1800 to win the Heisman ahead of July and his teammate Jeremiah Smith is another one of the top favorites at +1000. Smith was simply dynamic as a true freshman in 2024 and was one of the best wide receivers in college football. Advertisement They both will be getting plays from a new offensive coordinator in 2025 as well. With Chip Kelly now the offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders, Brian Hartline will be Ohio State's new play caller. Kelly called plays in his only season in Columbus after Ryan Day relinquished play-calling duties. Former Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia is also Ohio State's new defensive coordinator after Jim Knowles went to Penn State. Knowles, a Pennsylvania native, is now the highest-paid defensive coordinator in college football. Overall, the top five favorites to win the title all come from either the SEC or Big Ten. Georgia is the No. 3 favorite at +650 ahead of Penn State at +750 and Oregon at +800. Gunner Stockton is set to be Georgia's QB after taking over for Carson Beck in the SEC title game. The Nittany Lions return QB Drew Allar and a host of other key contributors as they look to make another postseason run. Penn State dominated SMU in the first round and beat Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl before losing to Notre Dame in the semifinals. Advertisement Oregon won the Big Ten title in 2024 thanks to a regular season win over Ohio State and a Big Ten title game win over Penn State. The Ducks will have former UCLA QB Dante Moore as their starter with Dillon Gabriel off to the NFL. The potential loss of WR Evan Stewart for the entire season because of a knee injury could loom large. The first team outside the two powerhouse conferences on the board is Clemson at +1300. The Tigers could be the best value pick among all the favorites. QB Cade Klubnik broke out in 2024 and both the offense and defense return a ton of talent. Notre Dame is at +1400 to win it all and ahead of both Alabama and LSU. The Tide and Tigers both missed out on the playoff field in 2024 and have the best odds of any team that failed to make the postseason a year ago. 2025 national title odds Ohio State (+500) Texas (+500) Georgia (+650) Penn State (+750) Oregon (+800) Clemson (+1300) Notre Dame (+1400) Alabama (+1500) LSU (+1500) Michigan (+2200) Ole Miss (+2500) Tennessee (+3000) Texas A&M (+3000) Miami (+3000)
