Horror as Top Chef star reveals daughter, 8, has rare disease that is 'disintegrating' her bones

Daily Mail25-07-2025
One of the former contestants on the competition show Top Chef has been facing a family challenge.
Hosea Rosenberg's daughter Sophia, eight, is battling a rare disease.
On Thursday Rosenberg discussed how his child has Multicentric Carpotarsal Osteolysis (MCTO). It is a genetic disorder characterized by progressive bone loss, primarily affecting the carpal (wrist) and tarsal (ankle) bones.
It's often misdiagnosed as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis due to similar initial symptoms like joint pain and swelling.
Sophia could be seen pictured in a hospital bed drawing as well as playing with her two pug dogs. Other photos showed her on a beach with a friend.
'"How is your daughter Sophie doing?" This is a question I am asked constantly. The answer is complicated. As with many things in life, it all depends on perspective,' Rosenberg - who was a winner of season five of Top Chef - began his update.
'Compared to normal, healthy 8-year old kids, she's not good. Her feet haven't grown in years (toddler size), her hands are starting to show disfigurement and they are very weak,' he continued.
And Sophia can't do things that normal kids can do.
'She has trouble with stairs, can't ride a bike, and needs help opening things. She gets tired and can't walk long distances. Her kidneys are slowly failing. She's missing groups of bones entirely.'
Sophia loves school, dance and laughing, is was added.
'Today, as she does every 6 weeks, she got an infusion at Children's Hospital Colorado. Twice every day, she has to take multiple medications,' Rosenberg continued.
'She wears splints on her legs and arms when she sleeps.'
'She wears braces on her legs every single day. She sees different therapists every week.
'She is constantly in and out of doctor's offices and hospitals. Her bones are slowly disintegrating and we haven't figured out how to stop it.'
But the proud dad said all he knows is that his daughter is doing her best and she has all the love and support possible.
'So how is Sophie doing? She's amazing,' Rosenberg concluded his caption.
Rosenberg is the owner and executive chef of restaurants in Boulder.
His menus highlight local, seasonal ingredients with an emphasis on sustainable sourcing.
Hosea's culinary path began while earning a degree in Engineering Physics at the University of Colorado.
In April 2020, Rosenberg revealed to his fans that his then-3-year-old daughter had been diagnosed with MCTO.

FDA upgrades nationwide honey brand recall over steel shards discovered

Health officials are asking consumers to throw away popular whipped honey products over fears they may be contaminated with small flakes of stainless steel. The FDA issued a recall for hundreds of jars of three Queen Bee Gardens whipped honey products on July 16. Experts warn that consuming small flakes of stainless steel can pose a choking hazard if they are 7mm (0.3 inches) or larger, especially for young children. But on August 1, the department updated the recall to Class II, meaning that the use of any these products can cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences. The recalled products, which were distributed throughout the US, had been purchased between June 1 and July 16, 2025. The Wyoming-based company had manufactured the Whipped Honey Raspberry and QBee Whipped Honey Pure products, both with lot codes 206235, on June 23. The QBee Whipped Honey Huckleberry with the lot code 206305 was made on June 30. While it remains unclear how the flakes entered the whipped honey jars, experts believe it could be due to degradation of older or non-food-grade metal equipment, improper handling or cleaning of equipment. The recalled products include 129 jars of QBee Whipped Honey Raspberry with the UPC 788394182358, 112 jars of QBee Whipped Honey Pure with the UPC 788394182006, and 24 jars of QBee Whipped Honey Huckleberry with the UPC 788394182259. In most cases, accidentally ingesting a small flake of stainless steel is unlikely to cause serious harm and can easily pass through the digestive system. However, stainless steel contains nickel, a common allergen which can be released from the metal into food items. When consumed in excessive amounts through food items such as whipped honey, these stainless steel flakes can cause allergic reactions such as contact dermatitis, presenting as itchy rashes and redness. In severe cases, the skin may become dry, scaly or develop blisters. Additionally, if the flakes have sharp edges, they could potentially scratch the throat or cause internal injuries in the digestive system. Consuming steel flakes can be especially dangerous for infants, young children and others in special risk groups as it may cause difficulty breathing, coughing, gagging and trouble breathing. Ingestion of metal fragments can also lead to a range of symptoms, including abdominal pain, vomiting, bloody stool, chest or throat pain in young children. Consumers who experience any health concerns related to the ingestion of these or similar products are encouraged to consult a medical professional and report the incident to the FDA's MedWatch program. No incidents of injury caused by consuming the contaminated whipped honey have yet been reported. This comes weeks after a recall was issued for ready-to-eat chicken sausages over fears of throat lacerations, health officials announced. Massachusetts-based Kayem Foods Inc has voluntarily recalled 24,000lbs of its 'All Natural Al Fresco Chicken Sausage Sweet Apple with Vermont Maple Syrup' after customers reported finding white pieces of plastic inside of them. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said it was 'concerned that some products may be in consumers' refrigerators or freezers.' 'The problem was discovered after the firm notified USDA-Food Safety Inspection Service that it received three consumer complaints reporting white pieces of plastic in the chicken sausage products,' the agency said. Affected products were produced on June 28, 2025, and have a use- or freeze-by date of October 1, 2025. Each 11-ounce package contains four sausages and has the lot code 179 printed on the back package label. They also have 'P-7839' printed on the inside of the USDA mark of inspection. The sausages were sold at Walmart and other retailers in 26 states, Washington DC and Puerto Rico.

Officials issue warning after E.coli outbreak is linked to RFK Jr's favorite drink

Florida is experiencing an outbreak linked to raw milk, a favorite of Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr and followers of his Make America Healthy Again movement. State health officials have reported 21 illnesses linked to Campylobacter and E. coli linked to unpasteurized milk. The pasteurization process involves heating milk to about 145 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes, which kills pathogens like E. coli, but raw milk skips this process. Seven people have been hospitalized due to drinking raw milk contaminated with harmful bacteria from a specific farm in Northeast or Central Florida, but officials did not disclose which one. 'Sanitation practices in this farm are of particular concern due to the number of cases,' the health department said. According to the health department, infections from Shiga toxin-producing E. coli and Campylobacter can lead to symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach cramps. In more serious cases, especially in children, these infections can result in kidney failure. In Florida, raw milk is legally sold only as pet or animal feed, not for human consumption, which reduces the ability to enforce strict sanitation standards. Labels on containers are required to clearly state that the milk is intended for animal use only. Health and Human Services Secretary RFK Jr has said he exclusively drinks raw milk. Supporters of the raw milk movement with the Make America Healthy Again push have celebrated his past statements about wanting to tackle the issue of making raw milk legal and more widely available nationwide during his tenure at the agency. Among the 21 cases of Campylobacter and E. coli in Florida, six were children under 10. Seven of the 21 people affected have been hospitalized but no deaths have been reported as of Monday. 'Floridians are encouraged to use this information to make informed decisions about their health and sources of raw milk should they choose to consume it,' the health department said. Sales of raw milk are illegal in eight states, while others, such as Florida, allow it with clear distinctions, such as making it for pet use only or available only on farm stands. Raw milk has garnered a cult-like following among conservatives, who believe each individual should decide what they drink regardless of risk. Since taking office, Kennedy's FDA paused a quality control program that evaluates labs testing raw milk intended for pasteurization, citing staffing cuts at the health department dating back to the Trump administration. Despite the pause, store-bought milk remains safe due to strict testing by state and federal agencies and the dairy industry Many believe the pasteurization process, which involves heating the milk and nothing else, strips it of much of its nutritional value, despite scientific evidence stating otherwise. Additionally, there are no beneficial bacteria in raw milk, according to the FDA, but it does hose a myriad of dangerous pathogens, including Salmonella, Listeria, and Staphylococcus. Since pasteurization of milk became routine about a century ago, the US has seen 'greatly reduced milk-borne illnesses,' according to the CDC. Illness still occurs, though. Between 1987 and 2010, raw milk and raw milk products caused 133 illness outbreaks, some of which were deadly, according to the FDA. Some wellness influencers claim that drinking raw milk may help alleviate allergies and illnesses, but these claims lack evidence. Sales of raw cow's milk are surging in the US, yet states have varying regulations on raw milk, with only a few allowing retail sales in stores and others allowing sales only at farms.
