Karnataka govt distributes sweets, sarees to women passengers as Shakti Scheme hits 500 cr mark

India Gazette14-07-2025
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], July 14 (ANI): The Karnataka government on Monday distributed sweets and saree to the women passengers in bus after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah handed over the symbolic 500th crore ticket to a woman under the Shakti scheme.
State Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy assured that the scheme will continue in future.
'We started this scheme on 21 June, 2023. The 500th crore ticket was issued by the CM and the Dy CM too. We distributed sweets and sarees to the passengers too today... The scheme will continue 100 per cent...' Reddy told ANI.
Earlier today, CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar distributed tickets to women passengers on the bus near Windsor Manor Bridge in Bengaluru.
On this occasion, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, and several other dignitaries were present.
Five guarantee schemes were announced during the 2023 Assembly election. The Shakti Yojana was launched on June 11 as per the decision taken in the Cabinet to implement it immediately after the government came into existence on May 20, 2023.
The Chief Minister explained that since then, women in the state have been provided free travel facilities in government buses.
Meanwhile, a row erupted in Karnataka over the inauguration of Kalasavalli-Ambargondlu Bridge in Shivamogga district between the state and Central government.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that neither he nor his office was consulted for the finalisation of inauguration event date of Kalasavalli-Ambargondlu Bridge in Shivamogga district by the Union Ministry.
The Chief Minister further said that the official invitation was received merely three days prior to the event, to which his office responded about his prior commitment to a state-level inauguration and requested that the event be rescheduled.
His remarks came after Union Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple key infrastructure projects, including the Kalasavalli-Ambargondlu Bridge in Shivamogga.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, his cabinet colleagues, and Congress MLAs boycotted the event as a mark of protest after the CM's request to postpone the event on another date was rejected by the Centre. (ANI)

Governor's statement exposes ‘insult' faced by him during convocation: K.N. Nehru

Municipal Administration and Water Supplies Minister K.N. Nehru on Thursday alleged that Governor R.N. Ravi was functioning like an agent of Nagpur (the headquarters of the RSS), instead of discharging his duties as the Governor of a State. Mr. Nehru said the Governor's customary speech on the eve of Independence Day clearly exposed the 'insult' he had faced during the convocation of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, where a student refused to receive her PhD certificate from him. 'The Governor, without any political decency, had used his Independence Day message to level allegations against the government,' he said. 'The fascist BJP regime at the Centre has sent poisonous snakes in the name of Governors to States ruled by parties other than the BJP. Mr. Ravi sought to create a lot of problems for the democratically elected government, and we crushed his designs through the Supreme Court,' he said. Mr. Nehru said Union Home Minister Amit Shah would 'laugh' at Mr. Ravi's claim that the Union government had allocated lakhs of crores of rupees to Tamil Nadu, as the Union Budget did not even have a reference to the State. 'Tamil Nadu's economy has become very strong, and has achieved 11.19% growth after a gap of 10 years under the DMK-led government. He [Governor] is desperate because the DMK's alliance partners have announced their decision to boycott the tea party hosted by him on the occasion of Independence Day,' Mr. Nehru claimed. He added that the per capita income in Tamil Nadu was the highest in the country, and that the State had succeeded in creating more women entrepreneurs and start-ups.

‘Partition wounds still bleed': Chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Remembrance Day

Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Thursday said that the 'wounds of Partition still bleed in our collective memory', as he attended an event in Faridabad to observe Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. On the occasion, Union minister for power, housing, and urban affairs Manohar Lal Khattar slammed the Congress for 'erasing' the sacrifices of Partition victims, accusing it of prioritising dynastic politics since the days of former PM and Congress leader Indira Gandhi. (HT Photos) 'Partition left deep wounds on Haryana's soil. Families came here with nothing but courage. Their determination rebuilt lives and transformed Faridabad into an industrial hub,' he said. Calling the Partition as one of the most harrowing chapters in India's history, Saini announced a set of measures to immortalise its lessons, an exhibition of rare Partition-era literature and documents, inclusion of its history in school curricula, and a reform to simplify name-change procedures for women post-marriage. Pledging ₹51 lakh from his discretionary fund for a Partition Horrors Memorial in Kurukshetra, he said that memorials are being developed across the state. Saini said the state will host an exhibition of literature and documents related to the Partition, while the history of the tragedy will be incorporated into the school curriculum so that 'future generations understand both the suffering and the resilience of their ancestors'. For women empowerment, Saini also promised special provisions to simplify official name changes after marriage, addressing a bureaucratic hurdle faced by many. Saini said: 'This day is not just about grief, but about safeguarding India's integrity. We must build a Haryana and an India rooted in peace, harmony, and brotherhood.' On the occasion, Union minister for power, housing, and urban affairs Manohar Lal Khattar slammed the Congress for 'erasing' the sacrifices of Partition victims, accusing it of prioritising dynastic politics since the days of former PM and Congress leader Indira Gandhi. Haryana Assembly deputy speaker Krishan Lal Middha called the Partition 'one of humanity's worst tragedies', citing the loss of 1-1.2 million lives, the mass displacement of families, and atrocities committed against women.

UP clears bill to form Banke Bihari Temple trust

LUCKNOW The Uttar Pradesh Shri Banke Bihari Ji Temple Trust Bill 2025 was cleared by state legislative assembly and the legislative council on Thursday, paving way for a trust to manage all funds related to the temple in Vrindavan town of Mathura. UP CM Yogi Adityanath speaks in the state assembly during the monsoon session, in Lucknow on Thursday. (ANI Photo) The Yogi Adityanath government had tabled the Bill in the assembly on Wednesday, replacing the ordinance promulgated on May 26. This Bill will give the trust rights over all the offerings and properties of the temple, including movable and immovable properties. Apart from jewellery, it also includes bank drafts and cheques. The trust will also decide the time of temple darshan, appointment of priests and salaries. According to the provisions of the Bill, the trust will get the work done for the temple complex and proposed corridor by taking advice from archaeological experts, engineers, architects and reputed institutions. The trust will include 11 nominated and seven ex-officio members. Planned facilities include computerised access and queue management kiosks, accessibility improvements for elderly and differently-abled visitors, designated prasad distribution points, potable water dispensers, resting benches and booths, gaushalas, community kitchens (Annakshetras), rest and travel houses, hotels, serais, exhibition halls, food halls, and waiting halls. Citing objectives of the Bill, the government stated: 'Shri Bankey Bihari Ji Temple in Vrindavan is an ancient temple. A large number of devotees visit here, especially during festivals. The temple is spread across approximately 870 sq m, out of which around 365 sq m is used as a viewing courtyard. Due to the extremely narrow access route to the temple, devotees and visitors face severe inconvenience. The tragic death of two devotees during an incident of overcrowding on August 20, 2022, highlighted the urgent need for efficient crowd management.' 'To fulfill the above-mentioned objectives, and for the all-round development and proper management of the temple area, including pilgrimage, religious, cultural, spiritual and establishment-related aspects and to ensure the temple's development and regulation in an organized manner, it was decided to constitute a trust named – Shri Banke Bihari Ji Temple Trust,' the Bill stated. While the Bill was being cleared in the Assembly, two members of the Samajwadi Party demanded discussion. However, the Speaker said they had not given notice for debate. Upon this, members of the SP staged a walkout from the House. As the state legislature was not in session and immediate legislative action was necessary to implement the aforesaid decision, the Uttar Pradesh Shri Banke Bihari Ji Temple Trust Ordinance, 2025 (UP. Ordinance No. 3 of 2025) was promulgated by the governor on May 26, 2025. The Shri Banke Bihari Temple Trust, the Bill stated, will be irrevocable. with PTI inputs
