This year, in a strategic pivot, anti-Naxal operations have gone into Monsoon Mode, with Forward Operating Bases (FOBs), drone surveillance, and night-vision technology powering an unrelenting campaign against Left-Wing Extremism (LWE).
Traditionally, the monsoon offered natural cover to Maoist groups, who capitalized on treacherous terrain and flooded streams to avoid detection. But in the past couple of years, things have changed, say officials.
CRPF's elite CoBRA units, DRG (District Reserve Guard), and the STF (Special Task Force) are now better equipped, both tactically and technologically and intel-wise, to navigate the jungle even during the harshest spells. "We're not letting up," said Bastar IG P Sundarraj, asserting that rainfall won't hinder operations. "Monsoon is no longer a lull season, it's now a high-opportunity window for us."
Govt's broader LWE eradication timeline aims to dismantle the Naxal presence by March 2026.
The monsoon, earlier considered an obstacle, is now a deliberate part of the strategy.
Security forces have marked success in recent joint operations in Indravati National Park and the Bijapur-Narayanpur axis, where multiple senior Maoist leaders were neutralized in early June. Maoists traditionally rely on low-intensity guerrilla warfare, exploiting the terrain to strike and retreat.
But with intelligence-based tracking, surveillance grids, and constant FOB patrols, their movements are increasingly being monitored and disrupted.

The expansion of Forward Operating Bases deep in the forest interiors have enabled overnight stationing of forces close to Naxal hotspots.
Officials say night-vision-enabled reconnaissance and drone surveillance have offered real-time intelligence in zero-visibility conditions during an operation of more than a day.
And lastly, mini-surgical operations, swift, localized strikes based on precision inputs rather than large battalion movements have allowed forces to make in-roads.
Each base is equipped with logistics, medical support, and supply chains, ensuring sustained deployment even in areas cut off by swollen rivers or landslides. "The psychological pressure is now reversed," a senior CRPF officer revealed. "Earlier, we avoided deep jungles in the rains.
Now it's the Naxals who must stay on the run."
Recently, speaking to the press, CM Sai affirmed full state support for the intensified operations.
"This is a fight we must win, and every season is a battlefront. Our forces are empowered, and the state is with them, come rain or storm," he said.
What once was an off-season has become an opportunity. With year-round readiness and advanced technology, Operation Monsoon is redefining counterinsurgency in Bastar, an officer said. The message is loud and clear, "The war against Naxalism in Bastar no longer takes a weather break."
Speaking to TOI, Bastar range inspector general of police P Sundarraj said, "In the last couple of operational seasons, we have witnessed some very encouraging outcomes in our ongoing operations against Left-Wing Extremist (LWE) elements across the Bastar Range.
"
"Thanks to the consistent efforts of our security forces, supported by accurate intelligence inputs and the strong cooperation of local communities, we've been able to neutralize several senior hardcore Maoist cadres including CPI Maoist General Secretary Basavaraju, recover weapons and ammunition, and dismantle key Maoist hideouts.
These achievements are the result of improved coordination between the State Police, Central Armed Police Forces, and the civil administration," he said.
As we enter into the 2025 monsoon season, which often poses operational challenges, we are fully geared up to continue the momentum. Our teams will carry out focused, intelligence-driven, area-specific operations with the same dedication, IG said. Community engagement, stepped-up vigilance, and outreach efforts in vulnerable areas will remain central to our strategy this season, the IG added.
Bastar range IG P Sundarraj further said that in the last monsoon, 28 encounters took place between security forces and Maoists, in which 66 Naxal bodies were recovered along with 100 weapons, besides, arrest of 316. About 349 had surrendered and 76 IED recovered.

Supreme Court Quashes Age Fraud Case On Lakshya Sen
Last Updated: The Supreme Court dismissed an FIR against badminton star Lakshya Sen, his family, and coach for birth certificate forgery, citing lack of evidence and abuse of process. The Supreme Court quashed an FIR against national badminton star Lakshya Sen, his family members, and coach in a case of birth certificate forgery on Monday (July 28). A bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Aravind Kumar observed that the allegations against Sen had already been debunked by competent authorities, adding that the complaintant sought to reopen the query without any substantial fresh evidence. The court declared the continuation of criminal proceedings against Sen an abuse of the process. 'The appellants, particularly appellant 1 and 3, are sportspersons of national standing, having represented India in international badminton tournaments and having earned multiple accolades, including medals at the Commonwealth Games and BWF international events," the court said. 'To compel such individuals who have maintained an unblemished record and brought distinction to the country through sustained excellence,to undergo the ordeal of a criminal trial in the absence of prima facie material would not subserve the ends of justice." Sen was said to have undergone bone ossification and dental tests at government-run hospitals including AIIMS, Delhi, in 2016 under an investigation by the Sports Authority of India (SAI). 'The findings of these tests supported the birth years as recorded in official documents. On that basis, the SAI closed the matter. The CVC, an independent oversight body, was also seized of the issue and recommended no disciplinary proceedings against D K Sen. These findings were accepted by the relevant authorities and have not been set aside or reopened," the bench said. The top court was hearing a plea against a Karnataka High Court order dated February 19 rejecting the petitions filed by Sen, his family members, and his coach. Complainant M G Nagaraj had alleged birth certificates of Sen and his brother Chirag Sen were forged and that their parents, Dhirendra and Nirmala Sen, and coach U Vimal Kumar, and an employee of the Karnataka Badminton Association, were involved. The alleged forgery was intended to allow them to participate in age-restricted badminton tournaments and avail government benefits. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Nuns among three held for alleged human trafficking in Chhattisgarh, forced conversion of Bastar's tribal girls, sparks political storm
RAIPUR: Chhattisgarh Railway Police have arrested three persons including two nuns on charges of alleged human trafficking and forced religious conversion of three tribal girls from Maoist- affected Narayanpur district under the age of 20. The girls were being taken to Agra on July 25 from Durg railway station, said railway police, adding that the girls were being taken for nursing jobs. The three arrested were identified as Sister Preeti Mary (45) and Sister Vandana Francis (50), both from Kerala congregation, and Sukaman Mandavi (19) from Narayanpur. They were arrested by GRP based on a complaint by a local Bajrang Dal functionary. According to the police, the trio was allegedly taking three tribal girls from Narayanpur to work as nurses at a hospital in Agra, while also attempting to convert them to Christianity. The girls, all under the age of 23, were intercepted at Durg station just before boarding the train by GRP. A GRP official said that whenever girls or anyone leaves a village for work, it has to be recorded in the 'palayan register' and intimated to the 'gram sachiv' but none of it was done when checked, nor did the alleged accused carry written consent from the parents, which is mandatory. The girls said the nuns were taking them to Agra in Uttar Pradesh on the pretext of jobs and that Mandavi had brought them to Durg railway station, from where they had to go to Agra with the two nuns, a GRP official said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas in Dubai | Search Ads Get Info Undo It was after the initial probe that members of Bajrang Dal protested at the railway station platform and demanded arrest of the alleged accused. They submitted a complaint to the GRP. Based on their statements and preliminary questioning of the accused, police registered Case number 60/2025 under Section 143(3) of the IPC for human trafficking, and Section 4 of the Chhattisgarh Freedom of Religion Act (1968). The alleged accused were produced before the court and sent on judicial remand. The issue has triggered a nationwide political storm and Church and Opposition Congress alleging that minorities are being targeted under the BJP-led administration. Lok Sabha MP and senior Congress leader KC Venugopal on Monday posted on X, 'UDF MPs held a strong protest outside Parliament today against the shocking arrest and harassment of Catholic nuns in Durg in Chhattisgarh. They were targeted by a violent mob despite no wrongdoing. By the BJP-RSS ecosystem, all minorities are treated as criminals and lumpen elements are unleashed to intimidate fellow citizens practising their faith.' This jugalbandi between Bajrang Dal goons and the police in Chhattisgarh shows the BJP's real intent towards religious minorities, Venugopal said in his social media post, adding, 'We demand their immediate release and justice for the innocent nuns.' Venugopal has written to Chhattisgarh chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai strongly condemning Bajrag Dal's vigilante action and appealing for strict action against perpetrators. Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi sharply reacted to the move, 'Two Catholic nuns jailed in Chhattisgarh after being targeted for their faith - this isn't justice, it's BJP-RSS mob rule. It reflects a dangerous pattern, systematic persecution of minorities under this regime. We will not be silent. Religious freedom is a constitutional right. We demand their immediate release and accountability for this injustice.' Chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai reacted stating, 'Three daughters from Narayanpur were promised nursing training and subsequent employment. They were handed over at Durg railway station by a local man to two nuns, who were taking them to Agra. There was an attempt to lure them with false promises and carry out human trafficking under the guise of religious conversion.' 'This is a serious matter concerning the safety of women. The investigation is currently ongoing. The case is subjudice and the law will take its own course. Chhattisgarh is a peaceful state where people of all religions and communities live in harmony. It is extremely unfortunate that a sensitive issue involving the safety of our daughters from Bastar is being given a political colour,' CM said. The three girls have been placed under protection at the Bhilai Sakhi Centre. GRP officials also said that photographs of minor girls and the contact details of a priest were found with the nuns, along with some official documents under scrutiny. Durg police maintain that the arrests were made based on legal provisions and witness statements. 'The three women were being taken under the pretext of employment, but the circumstances raised suspicion. The investigation is ongoing,' a GRP officer said. BJP slams Congress for backing accused BJP has strongly criticized Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and Venugopal, for allegedly siding with those accused in the trafficking and religious conversion of tribal girls from Bastar. In a statement issued on Tuesday, BJP's state media in-charge Amit Chimnani said, 'Due to their politics of appeasement, top Congress leaders have chosen to stand with the accused in the trafficking of Bastar's daughters. Shockingly, even Chhattisgarh Congress, which should be supporting the state's daughters, is echoing the voices of their national bosses. Once again, it has become evident that Congress leaders in Chhattisgarh merely follow the commands of their high command and have no concern for the people of the state.' Chimnani added that the daughters of Chhattisgarh will never forgive the Congress for this betrayal.

‘No reason to meet': Kim Jong Un's sister rejects South Korea president's outreach
The influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un rebuffed overtures by South Korea's new liberal government, saying Monday that its 'blind trust' in the country's alliance with the US and hostility toward North Korea make it no different from its conservative predecessor. Kim Yo Jong's comments imply that North Korea sees no need to resume diplomacy with South Korea and the US anytime soon. (AFP) Kim Yo Jong's comments imply that North Korea - now preoccupied with its expanding cooperation with Russia - sees no need to resume diplomacy with South Korea and the US anytime soon. Experts say she likely hopes to drive a wedge between Seoul and Washington. 'We clarify once again the official stand that no matter what policy is adopted and whatever proposal is made in Seoul, we have no interest in it and there is neither a reason to meet nor an issue to be discussed,' Kim Yo Jong said in a statement carried by state media. It's North Korea's first official statement on the government of South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, which took office in early June with a promise to improve badly frayed ties with North Korea. Lee's government has halted anti-Pyongyang frontline loudspeaker broadcasts, taken steps to ban activists from flying balloons with propaganda leaflets across the border and repatriated North Koreans who were drifted south in wooden boats months earlier. North Korea complains of South Korea-US military drills North Korea has shunned talks with South Korea and the US since leader Kim Jong Un's high-stakes nuclear diplomacy with President Donald Trump fell apart in 2019 due to wrangling over international sanctions. North Korea has since focused on building more powerful nuclear weapons targeting its rivals and declared a hostile 'two-state' system on the Korean Peninsula to terminate relations with South Korea. Kim Yo Jong called Lee's steps 'sincere efforts' to develop ties, but said the new government still plots to 'stand in confrontation' with North Korea. She mentioned the upcoming summertime South Korea-US military drills, which North Korea views as an invasion rehearsal. Lee said it's important to restore trust between the Koreas as he met Unification Minister Chung Dong-young and asked about his thought on the latest North Korean statement. Chung, whose job makes him the top South Korean official on North Korea, later told reporters that he intends to propose to Lee that South Korea and the U.S. 'adjust' their military exercises. Chung's remarks, which could mean scaling back South Korea-US training as a way to get North Korea to return to talks, will likely invite strong criticism from conservatives, who support expanded South Korea-US training to cope with North Korea's advancing nuclear program. Moon Seong Mook, an analyst for the Seoul-based Korea Research Institute for National Strategy, said Kim Yo Jong's statement shows North Korea is holding out for South Korea to abandon the U.S. alliance. Moon said that Kim likely sees little upside in engaging with the South since it cannot restart economic projects that previously benefited the North as long as international sanctions remain in place. North Korea focuses on Russian ties North Korea built cooperation with Russia, sending troops and conventional weapons to support its war in Ukraine, and likely receiving economic and economic assistance in return. Since beginning his second term in January, Trump has repeatedly boasted of his personal ties with Kim Jong Un and expressed intent to resume diplomacy with him. But North Korea hasn't publicly responded to Trump's overture. Leif-Eric Easley, professor of international studies at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, said that Kim Yo Jong's statement had a domestic audience. 'Kim Yo Jong's comments are an effort to advance national pride by portraying North Korea in a superior position, despite its economic struggles and international pariah status,' Easley said. 'She also seeks to justify Pyongyang's weapons programs and divide Seoul and Washington by criticizing upcoming military exercises.' Still, there is a limit on what North Korea can get from Russia, and Pyongyang could change course at a major upcoming meeting of the ruling Workers' Party, likely to be held in January, said Kwak Gil Sup, the head of One Korea Center, a website specializing in North Korea affairs. "I think North Korea may formulate a Plan B and Plan C in relations for South Korea and the US,' Kwak said.
